Let's all give a cheer for Bruce. YEAAAAAAAA Bruce! Now, that is a man with a lot of self-confidence!
If VCC is gone, where is the reunion going to be?

Hopefully Vinita is now headed in a positive direction. A coalition consisting of people who care for the well being of the city was created sometime ago, and they have respectfully dared to question the actions at City Hall. In the last city election (April 7), four council incumbents were defeated as well as the city Treasurer by a landslide. That speaks volumes! Our own Lynnda Teague-Sooter is one of the new councilors who took office April 21st!

We will use the Hotel Vinita Crystal Ballroom and have it catered by Shout and Sack. To our dismay, it will have to be self-serve on paperplates. Sadly, we have no other option.

The Crystal Ballroom at Hotel Vinita? Do they still take reservations?

Bruce- If you are looking for a place to stay, Ana could stay with us. I think Judy has an empty stall out in her barn where you could stay. You will need to check with her.

Gosh remember the Crystal Room. Didn't we have a function there, something we dressed up for? And the art in the dining room done by Ann Driskill. Too bad there isn't someplace in Vinita to do parties and stuff just for the town itself. I'll have no problem with the paper plates or whatever; I'm coming to see everyone.

Rhea the horses are beautiful,I'm not sure I could even ride one of those guys. It looks like it took a lot of concentration and I don't do that. Wish we could find some horses while we are home, I figure Mary Ann would like to go ride again. She did fine riding, it was the getting on that she had a problem with.

Carla, you collect antique dishes, I have my grandmother Dirickson's handpainted Havaland China that she painted herself in college. I have almost a 12 place setting I think I'm short a dinner plate and an odd piece or two. It is so delicate, you can see light thru it. Very beautiful. I seem to have started collecting dust mostly. I like to shop too, but would you believe I live 150 miles from a Wal-Mart. I'm close to the Saco Dehy, there I can buy feed, lumber, dog food, paint, plumbing stuff, the kitchen sink, and mosquito spray which is so very important in this neck of the woods. Like you have no idea. But it's home..

All- The Crystal ballroom was where the Lions Club and Rotary Club would meet for lunch during the week. I was fortunate enough to be a 'Jr. Lion' and 'Sr. Rotarian'. That meant that I got to go to one of their luncheons. It was a group of old guys (some of them were over 30!!!) that acted like a bunch of teenage high school boys. It was great!!!

The Chrystal Ballroom was refurbished several years ago, by the owner of the hotel. It is rented out for wedding receptions and etc. For awhile there was a small cafe in the hotel, but it closed, so they don't cater anymore.

The S.S. Christmas Dances were held in the Chrystal Ballroom. In fact, most any public gathering was held in the hotel ballroom. It was an elegant place.

My 8th Grade graduation banquet was held at the Chrystal Ballroom, after the Rural School graduation ceremony at the High School Auditorium. I guess I graduated twice at Ewing Halsell High School, once in the auditorium and once in the gym. Come to think of it, I might have been one of the last students to ever accomplish that, since the rural schools went to a 1st through 6th grade system soon after that.

What a horse race! A great win for Mine That Bird ridden by Calvin Borel. 50-1 odds! This horse was bought as a colt for $9500.

Mary Ann Johnson (Null)

My wedding reception was at the Crystal Ballroom and I remember other events there. We used to eat lunch in the hotel restaurant after church, when I was young. I lived in Vinita a for a short while, as an adult. I was so shocked when I took my daughters to the Ballroom for dance lessons because it was in bad condition. But I have peeked at it since it has been restored and it looks lovely. I heard the owner was trying to restore it back, as much as possible, to the original style.
I've been gone to a conference and boy did I miss a lot!
Carla - Did you say "Canton"? Oh my gosh, my daughter took me there once when she lived in Texas. I really didn't want to make the trip, but it was so worth it and so much fun (even if it was about 129 degress that day). She doesn't live in Texas anymore, but I would love to go there again. That and to market in Dallas - I passed that oppotunity up a few years ago and I don't know if the retail friend will offer again!
Rhea and Bruce - I'll have to go to your profiles and check out the pics!
Bruce - I knew you had a resteraunt but not that it burned. That is sad, but it opened the way for you to meet your true love and that is wonderful! I don't think I realized that you were so young when your mom passed. That is so difficult even at this stage of the game, but must have been really hard. I always really respected her. I'm so glad to know that you get to enjoy your children at this stage of the game.
I remember eating at Clanton's and seeing a glimpse of the "Negros in the back room" I didn't understand,it scared and saddened me, as a child. Even little children knew that was wrong. The bus stop cafeteria had seperate water fountains. Did you ever see photos of the black community with business' and hotel on the east side. They had to have their own business and schools and some were fairly properous for the times. I always thought my grandmother lived through some incredible historical changes, but we have too. Many changes were way to long in coming, thank God they have.
I never understood why we didn't have atletics for girls either, but I don't know if anyone ever even questioned it. Apparetly someone did, at some point. I would have really enjoyed that - well except for contact sports. I went to Rhea's house once in the fifth grade. We were having a great time - you know -snowmen and snow angels- all of the sudden,Rhea went berserk! She knocked me down, rubbed snow in my face and laughed! I didn't know what to do, I just layed there and took it - I'd never had brothers or boys in the neighborhood to "fight" with. I never fully trusted her after that. I don't want to ever have a reunion in the winter!
Rhea was ok in the summer though. I used to walk to her house and we went to the pool almost every summer day. That was when an extra 15 cents could buy a candy bar and a cup of Coke!
Judy - How horrid everyone looked in those swimming caps, but again, we never questioned it. I thought the "flowered" caps, that came out when I was the 5th or 6th grade, were really something. We also wore "thongs" to the pool. Old habits die hard, I have seriouly embarrassed my daughters in public a couple of times, talking about "thongs". I've finally learned to ask for "flip flops" when shopping for the beach.
Jan - You know your car had real character, just not reliable heat. Just after I got my license, I tried to parallel park in front of the pool hall (I wasn't headed there). I got both wheels up on the curb and then couldn't get the car out, much to amusement of the clientele. They finally came out to help me. They probably got a lot of entertainment from some of us.
I'm going to look at the pics and profiles now, but I've still got some stories to tell....

Mary Ann - Well I never! I'm sure I never pushed you down and rubbed snow in your face. There has to be more to that story...

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Rhea, Mary Ann- Maybe rather than having a dance contest, we could have a wrestling match?

05/03/09 04:52 PM #533

Judith Ann Postier

Mary Ann- I wear thongs! I have several pair.

05/03/09 05:16 PM #534

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Mary Ann- I too have a couple pair of thongs. I just don't think they are all that comfortable, especially when they are new.

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Mary Ann- I don't remember crowning Rhea in the 9th grade but I DO remember her telling everyone at school and around town that she had 'kicked' your butt and rubbed your face in the snow. She also wrote an essay about the incident in Mrs. Tyler's class and diagrammed it.

Judith Ann Postier

Steven- I think you might need to explore analysis to see why you have blocked the 9th grade football coronation from your memory.

05/03/09 06:37 PM #537

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Judy- My therapist tells me that it was the 'trauma' from being rejected by Rhea that has caused me to 'forget' everything about her. She has prescribed 'mental' and 'colonic' cleansing. I remember more about her now but can not get more than 20 feet from a toilet.

05/03/09 07:18 PM #538

Judith Ann Postier

Steven- I was getting worried, so glad to hear that you have sought treatment. With my mental health background, I pick up on those things very easily.

I was going to suggest you get a flat top, put on your original football uniform "#20" and go back to the football field to react the event, but since they have torn down and replaced the old bleachers and also have a new track, it couldn't possibly produce the familiarity of that night.

I REMEMBER RHEA, SHE WAS ALWAYS SO CUTE AND A GREAT CHEERLEADER. I ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO HER AND WANTED TO BE A CHEERLEADER JUST LIKE HER. THAT'S WHY I WENT TO THE CHEERLEADING CAMP FOR A WEEK AND TRIED OUT FOR CHEERLEADER WAS BECAUSE OF RHEA. DIDN'T MAKE IT BUT IT WAS FUN GOING TO THE CAMP.THAT'S WHY I JOINED THE PEP SQUAD BECAUSE I LOVED TO CHEER AND TO GO TO THE GAMES. THAT'S THE ONLY ACTIVITY MY MOM AND DAD WOULD LET ME GO TO.

05/03/09 09:03 PM #540

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Lavanna- Where was the cheerleading camp? Did any other girls from Vinita go?

Lavanna M. Hawkins (Morgan)

HI STEVE- IT WAS HELD AT VHS IN THE GYM, ONE WEEK AFTER SCHOOL STARTED. I REMEMBER ME AND KARNA TAYLOR STARTED IT TOGETHER THEN SHE GOT REAL BAD NOSE BLEEDS AND HAD TO QUIT, BUT I CONTINUED ON. I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW MANY THERE WAS THAT WENT, BUT I'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER RHEA. MAYBE I COULDN'T JUMP RIGHT OR DO CARTWHEELS BUT I SURE COULD CHEER!

Steve, Does a colon-mental cleansing mean you're no longer full of, or know _ _ _ _?
