While reading what's been written to one another I suddenly realized, we really haven't been so far apart all these many years. We still have a connection with the memories and the countless stories about each other. And isn't it fun that one story from someone makes us think of another. Our memories of Jay have the same theme, "what a great guy/friend he was." Even after 40 yrs, and for some of us, it's been that long since we last saw him and we still think, "what a great guy." I was lucky to catch up with Jay a couple months ago, and of course I told him I'd keep a good thought and say a prayer, and I reminded him I've known him for well over 50 yrs, that Catholic, Sacred Heart connection. Anyway, I'm glad for having known Jay and the rest of you from "69", so, when we meet in July we can tell stories and laugh with each other, and maybe tell some tales on our friends who are no longer with us, as I'm sure they would like being included in the festivities. And if you have any idea where any of our classmates are, get them on board. Later, Jan (PS: how's that Mrs D?)

Dear Classmates;
Last night I sadly found out that another of our classmates had also lost their battle with cancer a few years ago.
Wanda Thomas Salamy passed away around 5 years ago. She was a well respected teacher in the Barnsdall School system.
Wanda is now posted on the "In Memory" page. As soon as I can obtain an obituary for her it will be posted.

CLASSMATES WHO HAD MRS. DUKE FOR ENGLISH & SPEECH CLASS, REMEMBER EVERY YEAR THAT WE MOVED UP IN ENGLISH SHE MOVED UP WITH US. SHE WENT FROM 10TH TO 11TH GRADE ENGLISH. SHE LOVED HER KIDS SO MUCH AND WE LOVED HER. SHE WAS A NEAT TEACHER. THEN WE HAD MRS. TYLER OUR SENIOR YEAR! YUCK! I THINK SHE WAS TEACHING COLLEGE ENGLISH! I HAD MRS. TYLER IN TWO CLASSES, ENGLISH AND CREATIVE WRITING. I LOVED CREATIVE WRITING, STILL DO TO THIS DAY. I PRACTICALLY FAILED ENGLISH BUT I MADE A DECENT GRADE IN CREATIVE WRITING. I REMEMBER, I THINK I WAS WITH SALLY HAMILTON AND KAREN HERMAN, WHEN WE SNEAKED INTO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE RIGHT BEFORE GRADUATION AND LOOKED TROUGH THE DIPLOMAS, BECAUSE WE WEREN'T SURE WE WERE GOING TO GRADUATE! WE DIDN'T GET CAUGHT AND WE FOUND ALL THREE OF OUR DIPLOMAS! LOL

Bill Kolb- Remember the nite we spent with Chuck Donaldson and walked up over the trunk and hood of all the cars parked on Canadian? Does State Farm cover stuff like that?

You know your are old when: Your wife says, "lets run upstairs and make love."

And your reply is, "I can't do both!"

OK guys - I've been reading this and I've been slow in responding. But you should all be proud of me - I am now officially on Facebook and this! Facebook would not accept me, due to my name ( I'm not to crazy about it myself), so I entered my maiden name to get accepted and then goobered up my password - because I added my "not" married name - thankfully, my kids got it straightened out. Although I'm kind of a techno terminator, I'm getting there. I even have an IPOD, but I don't really like earphones for long periods - speaking of.....
Johnny, I had no idea (of course) that you had a hearing issue. I sometimes work with deaf children and am somewhat aware of the difficulties that you might face. Becoming involved with the deaf community is very interesting - have you learned any sign? I do sign (exact English) - so I'm little slow for American Sign Language - which I assume you have been exposed to.
Lavanna, Jr High and High School years are so hard! I thought I was so tall that I was a freak! I am 5'7 and probably was that tall by the time I was in the 8th grade. I remember going to the movies with some friends, who were meeting "boyfriends" there. There was one extra guy, but he didn't sit by me. However, he told his friends (who told their 'girlfriends", who told me) that he might go out with me, when he got as tall as I was. I don't know if he ever got that tall, but I was just sure my fate was doomed to be a single, Amazon woman forever. I think I remember that you were a good writer and I'm not sure just how I know that. Did you write any school newspaper articles? And just think, you could gain 50 lbs and look "healthy" - you natural blond, you!. Most of us have gained weight, but wouldn't describe our appearance as "healthy"! She who laughs last, laughs best!
Bruce, the last time I saw you was at OSU. You walked up to me, while I had my head buried in a book in the library. I "sensed" a "presents" and I remember looking up, forever - it seemed that you were so tall and I was shocked to run into you. You were my very first boyfriend (I don't think you knew, or cared). In kindergarten, we played on the swings, swinging in opposite directions and saying "hi" to each other, in passing. That did it for me, Bruce. That was, until David Miles came along in the first grade - he had 6 toes on one foot. Bruce, when he took of his shoes and showed me those toes, honey - you were history! Oh, and in the second grade, Terry L. told me he would pick me up in his go cart and take me to a movie. I dressed up and waited all Saturday afternoon, but Terry stood me up - I was heartbroken.
Now Carla - I just remember your mom as one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen - gray hair and all. You were so pretty in high school and I'm sure you have only improved with a "little" time. I remember what was maybe your 14th birthday at Teen Town( but I don't remember my 14th).
I "think" the first time I saw Steve P. was in a wagon ride for the rodeo parade (unless that was Ricky Williams or Johnny J!) I don't know if I was even in the first grade, but I decided that I didn't like him, because I only knew one other Steve and he was NOT a nice boy! Sorry Steve, what's in a name anyway? I liked you after I got to know you. However, I didn't know about that car stomping escapade until I read this, so maybe those first impressions...
I've seen Lynnda, Judy and Jan in person, recently and I know they look good! After I saw Rhea's beautiful pictures, I wasn't so sure about trying to put in my "homemade" picture. But oh well, you guys will find out sooner or later anyway. My loving and truthful daughters tell me that this pic makes my teeth look yellow and my mouth looks like the "Joker" (because of the shade of lipstick.) Truth hurts. Just don't call me "Old Yellow" - I'm not that emotionally strong. I'll try to upload it - I usually write down all the tech steps (that my children tell me), but I didn't this time. So, maybe I'll be on and MAYBE not. I'm not good about checking my home computer much through the week - but keep up the conversation!

Mary Ann, Thanks for the chuckle it's just what I needed tonight. You are so witty..Remember the night we smoked those great big cigars? We turned a not so pretty shade of green. And the nights you couldn't go out until you watched Rev. Billy Graham, do you suppose that had an impact on our behavior? And the trillion of miles "dragging main". Gas was 19 cents but sometimes it got to 22 cents. Wow! And thigh riding, kids don't get to do that, I guess seat belts got in the way of young love. Anyway I enjoy reading about everyone and catching up to where we are in our lives now..Have a good week.

HI MARY ANN, NO I DIDN'T WRITE ANY ARTICLES IN SCHOOL, BUT I REALLY ENJOYED WRITING. AFTER ALL I HAVE BEEN THROUGH IN MY LIFE, PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY, "YOU SHOULD WRITE A BOOK ABOUT YOUR LIFE!" I WOULDN'T WANT TO REMEMBER ALL THAT JUNK AND IF I DID WRITE ONE, I DON'T THINK ANYONE WOULD WANT TO READ IT. THE GOOD LORD HAS GOTTEN ME THROUGH A LOT IN MY LIFE THOUGH AND HE'S NOT FINISHED WITH ME YET.
I REMEMBER GOING TO THE SHOW EVERY SATURDAY FOR A QUARTER AND I THINK THAT INCLUDED POPCORN! I ALWAYS WENT WITH MY SISTER BUT SHE WAS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR BOYS AND I WAS MOSTLY LEFT ALL ALONE. I ENJOY READING ABOUT ALL THE FUN THINGS ALL OF YOU DID BACK WHEN. THIS WEBSITE IS AWESOME. I'VE HAD CONTACT WITH A FEW OLD FRIENDS....I DON'T HAVE A DIGITAL CAMERA BUT I SENT SOME PICTURES TO JUDY TO SEE IF SHE COULD DOWNLOAD THEM ONTO THE WEBSITE. I KNOW SHE'S NEW AT THIS LIKE ME, I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO MAKE A WEBSITE. BUT WHEN SHE GETS THEM UP I THINK YOU ALL WILL BE SURPRISED AT WHAT I LOOK LIKE NOW! THANKS JUDY!

To all- Speaking of writers, our own Eddie Veith is a very distinguished writer. He mainly writes on Lutheranism.

My wife, Susan, and I recently rejoined Grace Lutheran Church here in Tulsa, the church we went to after we were married. We decided to take the new members class. Our Pastor passed out three books at the first class. Luther's Large and Small Catechism and Spirituality of the Cross. I noticed that the author of the Spirituality of the Cross was written by a Dr. Eugene Edward Veith, Jr. from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I just had to interrupt our Pastor after the lesson began to inform him that this author was NOT Dr. Eugene Edward Veith, Jr. from Milwaukee, Wisconsin but it was Eddie Veith from Vinita, Oklahoma. I contacted Eddie shortly afterward and began emailing back and forth. He and his lovely wife Jackie and son Paul were back in Oklahoma to attend a family reunion of Jackie's last summer and came to our church and over to our house for lunch. Eddie is now Provost at Patrick Henry College outside of Washington, D.C.

Small world!!!

Mary Ann- I am also very hard of hearing. Must be in the water!!! I got a cochlear implant in December of 2007. It has helped but I still don't have a clue in crowded situations. I have become somewhat proficient in lip reading. Do you have any expertise in that area?

Steve

P.S. Tell your girls to post some recent pictures. We all know what you looked like in high school.

Mary Ann Johnson (Null)

Jan - I bet Billy Graham's sermon curbed my fun for at least that night. Yeah, I did smoke a few times - but thanks to Larry Bill it didn't become a habit. He got in my car one time after we had "smoked" and said something like, "you're not doing this, are you"? That was worse than my mom accusing me! Thanks to Larry Bill I have full lung capacity today! I think I was looking for Prince Charming on Main street - I didn't find him, but I did meet a few toads!
Lavanna - Writing has been good therapy for me. I kept a journal for awhile. If I can upload a picture, trust me, anyone can! Get someone with a digital camera to take a picture of you and they can put it on from their computer and email it to you. But be aware that any tech advice that I give should come with a disclaimer like "blind leading the blind".
Steve - I know I thought I was brilliant for getting a pic uploaded, but I think Eddie is the real thing. And to think that I threw mud at him in the first grade! That experience may have given him deep spiritual insight on true forgiveness at an early age! It is so wonderful that someone from our class discovered him (because I doubt that he would tell us). Eddie, if you read this, I'm getting along in years now and I don't want to go to my grave with this on my conscience - I really am sorry. I don't know what got into me, well maybe I do, but there was fresh mud and you were the closest target (it was not personal). I never did that again, Eddie!
Steve, I can give you a few tips on lipreading. That was an early course I had to take in college. I'll mail you sometime, but I'm off to a "ladies meeting" (yes, and they let me in.) Later, guys!

Hi Mary Ann,

It so good to hear from ya.
Yes, Deaf Culture is interesting and you will never think of Alexander Graham Bell in the same light as before...LOL. Hated by one and all in the deaf world. It seems Mr. Bell testified before Congress that deafness was hereditary and was asking Congress not to let deaf couples marry! I was dumbfounded when I read that.

Oh absolutely on the American Sigh Language. I learned to sign pretty good...but I am terribly slow compared to the kids who grew up deaf. Geees...talk about "talking" 90 miles per hour.

Steve glad you are able to use the transplant. The sign for someone who has an implant is the "vampire sign" two fingers gesturing toward the side of the neck. They are not real keen on it...while they accept it, they view it as the "hearies" trying to "fix" their world again. (smile) There is a whole stigma about their children being forced to undergo the implant. It is a complicated area in deaf circles.

After dealing with the initial shock of deafness (took almost a year and the knees of my jeans wore out praying), Jan and I had loads of fun with it. Going to Disneyland and being able to talk over long distances and noise without skippin a beat. LOL There is a story I will save for when we meet, about my daughter and the first word she learned to sign was "no". LOL

Wow! Lipreading! Haven't given it much thought. I mean its not like we can read your lips across the restaurant and know what you are talking about. (giggle) Its not the James Bond thing, OK. To me, its as much intuitive as an actual science. If you can get some clue as to what the conversation is about, then it just kinda fits in as another way to get information. Secondly, its virtually impossible to rely on it very much. For instance a man with a beard or mustache is difficult to read, then there are the natural language barriers...Spanish, Asian, etc, etc. And you never really noticed how much people REFUSE to face you when you are talking to them or put their hand in front of their mouth ROFL.

Try getting directions in WalMart from some poor soul telling you to go 3 aisles down and turn left...of course they are actually LOOKING where they are telling you to go and not at you. So you gently lay your hand on their shoulder and inform them you are deaf...LMAO...then they promptly acknowledge you and immediately turn back to what they were telling you. ROFL
Only this time it is 3 times louder than when they started. (we can feel the vibrations in our chest and everywhere else) Hope it wasn't directions to the bathroom you were seeking...because by now EVERYONE knows where you are headed. ROFL

Mary Ann, of all the life experiences I have had in my lifetime, I can think of none that has made such a lasting impression. To be able to live...work and play...in the deaf world and "understand" all that they overcome on a daily basis has been such a blessing. I thank God for the opportunity to get to know this culture and these people. Amazing! Absolutely amazing!

I can tell you horror stories of what the hearing world has attempted to put the deaf people through. (shakes his head) As part of that hearing world...it will embarrass you to think of the atrocities that were put upon this culture and not all that long ago.

Anyways...enough...lol. So good to hear from you and look forward to the reunion.

Hugs

John
PS. Signing Exact English is not bad. We can pick up on it pretty easy. You just have to remember in ASL there is no "IS" (being) verb or any of its conjugations. LOL That will put a kink in your learning curve...LOL

Hello All,
I am so glad this is here for us! Bless Judy and anyone else who got this going!!

Mary Ann...I so remember you being the only one who wrote to me when I was in Indiana one summer. We often spent summertime where ever my dad was working! I hated being gone from Vinita and my friends!! You will never know how much that meant to me! Thank you for the kind words about my mom. I always thought she was beautiful. Sometimes it would hurt my feelings if someone thought she was my grandma because of her white hair. Her family gray's early! I did not get gray until I was almost 40...she got gray in her 20's. I love to go to the nursing home and fix her hair and makeup. She has Alzheimers but she sure laughs and giggles when I fix her up. That is mostly the way she communicates. Daddy says she "talks" to him all the time. I think I look more like my dad. My family thinks I look more like her. I can't believe you live in Bartlesville! Bill and I lived there in the mid 70's. We still have friends who live there. I thought your picture was beautiful!

Johnny...I am sorry to hear about your hearing. I am certain it was difficult to deal with...but it sounds like you have kept a positive attitude. I am afraid I do not know any sign language. I have worked with hearing impaired and had to wear a microphone hooked up to the frequency of their hearing aides. You have to remember to turn the microphone off when you are having a private conversation...or going to the bathroom. By the way I am very frustrated trying to figure out some of your abbreviations...I finally figured LOL was not lordy oh lordy but was Laugh Out Loud!!! I was very proud of myself. I am still having trouble with LMAO and ROFL.

Steve...You and my husband will have a great time playing golf...he has a hearing loss too. I can not convince him to get hearing aides!!! Maybe you can check him out and see if it is selective loss! Seriously I had no idea you had had surgery. By the way...I watch The Young and the Restless!! How long have you and Bruce been watching it?

I guess we all had some hidden feelings in high school! I never really felt a part of any one group. I just sort of hung out with everyone. I certainly didn't feel that I was part of the "popular" group. I felt like I had a lot of different friends. We all have such unique gifts and talents. I enjoy friendship...in high school if you had a "guy" friend everyone thought you were an item! Now it is acceptable. I just know that I agree with Jan...we really are a great group and it seems that we have not been apart for all these years.

On a lighter note one of my memories is of Bill and Chuck and I can't remember who was with them. They sneaked Bill's dad's car out late one night and drove to my house. Two of them got out of the car and came to my bedroom window. We had had a "peeping Tom" a few weeks earlier and a neighbor caught him. I thought the peeping Tom was back and went and got my mom. She called the police. Meanwhile my grandmother, who lived behind us on Foreman street, could not sleep and was sitting on her back porch. She saw the guys standing on each others backs and came across the backyard and said "What are you guys doing?". They fell to the ground and ran for the car! They were scared to death! Bill was sitting in the driver's seat looking straight ahead the whole time! I felt bad cause they turned out to be my friends just wanting me to sneak out and go for a ride! I think they have all forgiven me by now!

I think we should plan a memorial of some sort for our friends. I will miss a chance to visit with all of them.

Maybe Eddie should bring copies of his books to sell at the reunion. Steve you could also set up a booth to sell your golf books.

Please forgive all spelling and grammatical errors...after 29 years of teaching first grade I have a really hard time with words over three letters. I only teach capital letters, periods and question marks. I am rusty on everything else. I will try very hard not to talk to you like my first graders. My family gets a little irritated with that!
Love to all,
Carla

CARLA, I REMEMBER YOU BEING REALLY NICE TO ME IN SCHOOL. I KNOW WE HAD SOME CLASSES TOGETHER BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH ONES NOW. MY MOM HAD ALZHEIMER'S REALLY BAD BEFORE HER PASSING, SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HER OWN CHILDREN. IT'S BEEN ABOUT 10 YEARS SENSE HER PASSING, BUT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW SHE WAS SO AFRAID OF ME WHEN I BENT DOWN TO GIVE HER A HUG. I KNOW WHAT YOUR GOING THROUGH. I'LL PRAY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I WAS ONLY ALLOWED TO GO TO BALL GAMES WITH THE PEP SQUAD SO I DON'T HAVE ANY TALES TO TELL ABOUT MY TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL. EXCEPT THE TIME I TOLD OUR BUSINESS EDUCATION TEACHER HE WAS WRONG ABOUT AN ANSWER TO A PROBLEM. I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER HIS NAME, BUT I KNOW THE CLASS NEXT DOOR SURE HEARD ME. LOL THEN AFTER WE WERE DISMISSED I WAS TALKING TO MY FRIENDS ABOUT IT, AND HE WALKED UP RIGHT BEHIND ME. BOY, DID MY FACE TURN RED!

Carla- I started losing my hearing in the early 80's. I went to a hearing specialist and she told me that when I was ready to hear to come back and they would fit me with hearing aids. A couple of years passed and I was ready to hear again. It was the difference in nite and day. I could not believe that I could hear again. Please encourage Bill to try one out. If he is concerned about the look they have ones that are almost invisible. It really didn't make me that much difference. I was always the ugly duckling so the hearing aid enhanced my appearance if anything.

It has been so much fun catching up with everyone. And yes kudos to Judy.

Mary Ann- I saw your car, the Mustang, at Tresler's, the day before you got it. What a neat car. Similar to yours Carla. What would you give for that car today? Steve

I think I remember that a member of our class was a 'beauty pageant' winner. Maybe Miss Grand Lake or something like that. Does anyone know who that could have been???

HI Carla,

Well thank you but its really not necessary. I really do love my deaf world. Oh sure, at times, I miss my hearing. But thats life!

As for the sign language...I live in a hearing house. I seldom use it anymore. If I am totally lossed in a converstation, Jan will bring up to speed by signing but thats about the only time you will see us sign.

LOL (Laughing Out Loud) ROFL (rolling on floor laughing) LMAO now this is a little different (Laughing My A__ OFF) These teenagers keep you up to date trust me...(smile)

Carla- I've only been watching Y&R since 1974. Poor Kevin. So is Jill not really Mrs. C's daughter? What a great guy Murph is. J.T. is from Enid, Oklahoma and is a friend of my oldest son, Cody. How about GL? I had to cry when Coop died.

STEVE, HAS IT COME TO THIS, THAT MEN WATCH SOAP OPERAS NOW! LOL.... WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO?

03/25/09 03:47 PM #65

Carla Ray Williams (Yocum)

Steve,

Thanks for the info on your hearing loss. I have worked hard to get him to go try a hearing aide. He may be influenced by your story. I will share it with him. He started having trouble in the late 80's early 90's. It has progressively gotten worse. He use to help out with an organization called Oklahoma Kids. He volunteered to be in charge of the sound system and had to sit right by the speakers. I really think that is where his started.
He can hear very well if there is no other noise. He gets lost when lot of people are talking or the TV is on.

I have watched the Young and the Restless for so long...I think I started in college. I don't watch The Guiding Light. I watch General Hospital, All MY Children, and sometimes One Life to Live. I have the Soap Net Channel and if I have trouble sleeping I watch TV. Bill has the Golf Channel.

This is how I recall the YR storyline. Jill use to have a different mother who worked for Mrs. Chancelor. She had two brothers. Snapper was a Dr. and was married to Nikki's older sister (I think her name was Casey) the other brother was a lawyer and I think his name was Greg. Jill had an affair with Mrs. C's husband and had a child by him. I have no idea how she became Mrs. C's daughter. I did not watch it for several years and that is when the water got muddy for me! I heard there is a web site that does like a family tree for the saops for new viewers. My daughter is trying to find out about it so we can research the family lines. I will get back to you with the site if she finds it. I hate what they have done to Sharon...she is not a tramp. She is one of my favorite characters. Kevin may be beyond help!!! I felt sorry for Amber having to be locked in the closet with the dead guy! That freaked me out.

Speaking of Family Tree's is anyone in to Geneology? Bill and I spend a lot of time on it. We got the bug from my aunt and uncle they did my mom's family back to 1640. It is fun. If you like to solve mysteries that is what it is like.

By the way I never thought of you as an ugly duckling...if I recall you were in the top five!

03/25/09 05:15 PM #66

Carla Ray Williams (Yocum)

Steve,
Have I got a web site for you. My daughter just e-mailed me with the info you use to check the family tree for soaps...but I found something that works even better. Go to the web and type in Young and Restless Family Tree. It will list several sites...I picked the first one. I was right about Jill she has a past you won't believe. It will allow you to search any family you want. I searched the Foster...Jill's maiden name and the Chancelor trees! Boy is there a lot of dirt on them. You need to have time cause there is a lot of info on each character.
