Carla Ray Williams (Yocum)
Jan, We got as many names, birth dates, death dates and any info we could about where they last lived. Most of Bill's family originated in Missouri. We went to the Springfield Library and they had an area where you could research family info. We looked in old issues of newspapers for obituaries. That gave us a lot of information on family members. We went to Friendsville, Maryland to research my mom's family (Friend). We also joined Ancestry.com and have used it for Census, death, marriage, civil war, immigration, ship records etc. documents. It is so exciting to find someone that has taken a long time and a lot of searching!! It is the most awesome feeling in the world to visit the grave sites of great-great-great grandparents. We then went to the local genealogical society and found information on marriages and deaths. We have marriage licenses and many other documents on our relatives that we found in those places. We have found pictures, military records etc.. We really enjoy doing it. Many of our trips are planned around places we want to do research on family. My grandmother's family and my daddy's family have been the hardest. The names Williams and Johnston are very common. I will try to give you a call soon and share more info with you. I am trying to put together scrapbooks on each family for our kids and grandkids. My Uncle Sam and Aunt Donna Friend are the best researchers. I have made several trips with them to learn what to do and where to look. It takes time, determination and patience...but the payoff is like nothing you can imagine. When I retire I will have more time to work on the ones that have been so hard. I hope that helps you some. Carla
