Betty - You should write more on here - you're a hoot! And maybe the only one who could out talk (write) me. Besides, anyone who picks up hitchhikers in this day and age, must have some stories to tell. All - I remember the Rodeo and the parade was a huge deal to me. When I was about 5, we had box seats and my shoe fell off onto the grounds and got good and trampled before a gentleman cowboy retrieved it for me. The voices of Clem McSpaden and Vernon Glen will be in my head forever, I guess. I could even hear the music and announcers from my home, on the nights I didn't attend. I would have liked to have gone this year, but the beginning of a new job and commute doesn't leave me with a lot of energy on the weekends at this point.
Carla - Be very kind to yourself for the next few months as you need some time to be restored. I have been thinking of you as the school start up is so involving. I know that new baby is so precious to you.

Rhea - I think you will be wonderful in that position! I also know that you will have a lot of responsibilities, but that can be energizing too! You go girl!

Well Judy I really enjoyed your Rodeo report. John Lindsey the Rodeo Clown was always one of my favorites. But you can't do, "Chief Dirty Belly and the No Washum Tribe" anymore. Did you know my Mom was Rodeo Queen one year? And, she also sang the National Anthem a few times.
But, Vernon Glenn was the best...

"Empty saddles in the old corral, my tears would be dried tonight.
If you only say I'm lonely, as you carry my old pal
Empty saddles in the old corral"

I always thought that was as cool as it got. Maybe I will bring the Girls up next year and give them a real ride.

Thank you so much for your notes and cards regarding the loss of my mother. Your notes have really helped and I could feel all the prayers. My daddy is adjusting better than I expected. I visit him everyday and bring him to my house on weekends.

The baby is doing great now and is growing like a little weed! I am enjoying him so much. Bennett, the four year old is playing T-Ball and having a blast!

Rhea-So glad to hear about your new job! You will do a great job! I think it is so important to stay active! It gives us a purpose!

Betty and Judy it was great to see you while I was in Vinita! It makes me realize that old friendships never die no matter how long it has been since we saw each other! It just felt like yesterday!

Paul-your video was great...but seeing it in person was even sadder! You could see the whole street and it looked so empty! I can't believe those beautiful, historical buildings are gone! The one that burned use to be the old Griffin grocery store where my mom and my uncle Sam took milk from the cows and sold it to the Griffins! One of my aunts married their son. I have the old glass bottles and carriers they used. Some of the bottles say Griffin Grocery on them. I am sad that old building is gone! Did they find out what started the fire?

Mary Ann -- There is more to that story. You see after Alena and I found out "how great" the bars were, we decided to share our good fortune and we placed the bars we did not eat in our breakroom. So now you know the rest of the story!

Rhea - Congratulations on your new position. Work is a form of therapy for caregivers!

Carla - I am go grateful that I got to spend a little time with you. And you are very right, true friends are friends for life and God knows how important friends are to all of us!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I so enjoy all the words of support and comfort we share with one another on this site.

Bruce you mentioned John Lindsey, his widow Nell and I still keep in touch she's in her 90's and still a spitfire. John was a funny wonderful man, he had the quickest wit. Nell lives in TX with Linda Jo and family.

Betty/Mary Ann- I bought the bars and I'm relieved to know that I can eat them guilt free because they are for health reasons. That's how I justify dark chocolate too. Had the electric blanket on last night and a sweatshirt on today, Fall is in the air.

JAN- WE HAD OUR FALL IN THE SUMMER AND WE ARE HAVING OUR SUMMER NOW. IT WAS COOL AND WET ALL SUMMER AND NOW THAT'S ITS ALMOST FALL IT IS IN THE 80'S. NEW YORK IS HAVING THE WEIRDEST WEATHER THIS YEAR. BUT IT IS SO NICE NOT TO HAVE TO BUNDLE UP YET. NOT READY FOR THAT "WHITE STUFF!"

Bruce- Do you remember the bullfighting dummy they used to hang on a cable across the south end of the arena? I remember the huge white Brahma bulls hooking and butting the dummy and also John Lindsey playing with the Brahmas with his huge tire tube. Lindsey was also a great barrel man.
Yes, I remember that your Mother was a Rodeo Queen and I also remember when your sister Barbara ran for Queen. The Queen Contest was a big deal and very well attended when we were growing up. I have helped with the Queen Contest the last few years, and it has become a little more challenging as it now requires not only horsemanship, but an interview with the judges and freestyle riding. The prizes have improved too, the Queen wins a saddle among other nice items.

Jan-Mary Ann -- Glad you liked the bars! About the hitchhikers -- I have passed up two,but felt guilty for not stopping. Of course, they were going in the opposite direction that I was going.

When I have time, I will tell you the story about not paying attention and going into the men's bathroom and then finding myself on the elevator with the man who had watched the whole thing! Actually, quite funny.

Betty - Only you could end up in the men's restroom and still have a funny story to tell. Your generosity in sharing the fiber bars, reminded me of something. When I was in college and doing free therapy to get the required amount of hours, I saw a lovely lady from Japan. She owned a Chinese restaurant and wanted to improve her english and lose some of the accent. The day I told her we would work on "plurals", she said she had always liked "pearls". It took awhile to get through on that one. Her name was Winnie Wu and her son was Wing Wang Wu (that always makes me chuckle). I felt led to be very generous too, one time. Winnie brought a large platter of what looked to be chocolate pinwheels, in appreciation at the end of therapy. I bragged and carried on about how great the food looked. I took a huge bite, with her watching my face, in hopes of catching a look of bliss coming over me. Well, something did indeed come over me, as I struggled to avoid expelling the treat with rapid force. I did swallow it. Eyes watering, I said, "Oh Winnie, what a surprise, um, what's in this? She gleefully told me "seaweed and fish" - I didn't ask anymore. She insisted that I have more and take the entire platter home. I explained that I just couldn't be that selfish, with such a "treat" as this. Winnie followed me down the hall to the clinician room (full of hungry students). With Winnie standing there in anticipation, my classmates grabbed the chocolate pinwheels and ate - their faces said it all - I kept Winnie busy talking. I did notice that several left he room rapidly. That was before sushi (sp?) was popular with some, but never with me!
Bruce - I didn't know that your mom was Rodeo Queen. Was she raised in Vinita? Where did she meet your dad? I do remember your sister running for Rodeo Queen. Where are your sister's now?
I remember that clown, I think. I used to work with a man (PE coach) who had been a rodeo clown. Let's just say, one never sat down, without first checking the chair, if he was anywhere near!
Jan - those fiber bars are a great excuse for meeting chocolate needs and only 140 calories. When you calculate in the fiber, they are actually minus 700 calories!
Carla - I'm so glad that your dad is doing ok. I can't imagine loosing a mate after that long and at that stage of life. Don't over do. I know that baby is getting to such a cute stage! How is your class?

Steve - Pretty sad. OU dropped down in the poles and now looks like the same will happen to OSU. I was just sure they were going to turn things around and end up winning! They will surely do better next week!

Betty Gail- I would like to respond, but I'm still recovering from the self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

09/13/09 10:01 PM #985

Mary Ann Johnson (Null)

Steve - I'm sorry about the head wound - you might try a fiber bar. But, surely you must be part cat and haven't used up all your 9 lives yet. It was sad, but they have recovered before (and so have you). It's sad, but early!

To All- A Public Service Message: Don't take a drink of tea or any beverage when reading Mary Ann's messages. I nearly choked trying not to spit tea all over my computer while laughing when I read about Wing Wang Wu!

Jan-I would love to have John Lindsey's wife's address. My daddy and my uncle Sam were friends of his and I have several old pictures of him I would love to pass on to his family! I remember him so well! Tell your dad daddy was so sorry he missed him when he came by to see him at JoLee's! We got there about 10 minutes after he left.

Judy-I am glad you work with the Queen candidates! I bet you would be good at that. Did you ever run for Queen? Both my daddy's sister, Opal Williams, and my mom's sister, Mickey Friend, were Rodeo Queens. Mickey was the first one.

Hey Steve that's taking a good aim; I wouldn't want you to affect your golf game with an errant shot of another kind.

Bruce- It has actually helped my golf game. I can no longer THINK!!!

Carla, Well I guess you and I are of Rodeo Royalty! Those Ironside wannabes do serve loyally though!
And, Mary Ann I am third generation Vinitian; my grandfather Dillon started Vinita Hay & Grain. My mother & father met in Vinita after he moved to town and joined Dick Wheatly in a Law firm. My Dad was born near Pea Ridge, Okla near Rush Springs south of Chickasha. My sisters Martha & Barbara live here in Austin and Diane lives in Elkhart, KS.

Carla- I never ran for Rodeo Queen. I was too shy. I have ridden in the Parade and Grand Entry every year since 1960. So next August will mark my 50th year! Being Rodeo Queen would have been great, but having the honor of carrying the Legionaire Flag, and leading the Parade and Grand Entry for the last 5 years has more than made up for not wearing the crown. In 1973 the rodeo stock contractor was Dell Hall, and prior to the Grand Entry he ask me to be a pivot for the Grand Entry. I loved it and I was hooked, so every year, including 1973, I have recruited the girls to be pivots. Through the years it has been great fun, as different stock contractors have had us use various patterns to sit the pivots and again when leaving the arena following the introductions.

Well Carla I tried to get a WRMR one up on the Ironsiders but I was afraid Judy would trump me with that "50 years of Grand Entry" and that "carrying the Legionaire Flag". Judy is the new Vernon Glenn without the pipes. I think I'll sing in honor of Judy, "Empty Saddles in the olllllld corral......"
Lavanna, I join you and Judy on the Birthday Cake! Mine's the 21st; sandwiched between you & Judy (heee heee).
