You know Judy & Lavanna in honor of all our Bdays being this past week I feel like singing that old John Lindsey standard we all know and love. "Big Balls in Cow Town we'll all come down, Big Balls in Cow Town we'll dance around....." or (cut & paste)

Paul- I also send best wishes to you for better health and a speedy recovery. Actually I do remember you telling me in school about a health problem, I was sitting in front of you in whatever class. I probably remember because I'm eating Mary Ann's fiber bars now.

Jan - I must assume that the fiber bars jogged your memory because....what?.... they make you sick and want to run to the toilet???.....;)

Jan - You are to funny! You know there is a point of losing more than can be gained.....
All - I was reading the past few days info. Dr. Marks delivered me also. I remember going upstairs to his office and that he had a dark red leather sofa in the waiting area and a nurse that seemed very serious to me (she may not have been). One place that I went (upstairs and downtown) had an electric chair on the side of the stairs. It may have been in his building. The stairs had to be hard on older people, but then, Drs made house calls then. I also went to Dr. Gilbert, as my dentist. The smell of cigars on his hands is with me yet - it was all the incentive that I needed to brush regularly.

Jan - Weren't you in grade school, when you broke your arm running backward at recess? (Well, surely it didn't happen in high school). I was very impressed with the whole ordeal and the cast(I never had a cast and was a little jealous).

I remember going to see Dr. Olson a couple of times when his office was upstairs on main street. I remember the door to Dr. Olson's office had a frosted glass window in it with his name on it. I always wished I could ride the electric lift chair up the stairs, but I knew better than to ask! Back then you received a coupon to get an ice cream cone at Haslett Drug after you saw the doctor. I only got a cone one time, I think after getting a shot. We were never sick enough to go to the doctor. I didn't even know they made house calls back then until a few years ago.

Do you all remember getting the sugar cube polio vacine? We went to Will Rogers grade school cafeteria on a Sunday afternoon. It was a city wide thing.

I remember when they built the medical building on Scraper. It was so state of the art! It even had a drug store!

Remember Tim Vogel. I remember having to go to the lab that his mother ran in one of the buildings downtown to get my blood tested before I had my tonsils taken out when I was around five. It might have been in the same building area that Dr. Olson had his office before the old hospital was torn down and the new medical office building built.

We always went to Dr. Olson, what a nice man. I got to ride the chair once when I had a broken arm. It was pretty neat, especially when you're 3. I remember the windows open, lord anyone could have fallen out the window. But no one did, guess kids were smarter then. Wonder what has become of Rhea? I'm sure she's jumped feet first into her new job and is giving it her all. But I do miss hearing from her. We all seem to have slowed down a bit on the site, maybe this winter we'll have more time to catch up again.

Mary Ann those fiber bars are a God Send aren't they. Look at all we're remembering. Yes I did break my arm running backwards at the end of 6th grade, but I came into the 6th grade with a broken arm. What can I say, I was active and maybe clutzy.

Betty Gail Charles (Langley)

Happy birthday to those of you whose birthdays that I missed. I will ask you all for prayers. The thirteen year old daughter of our CFO got kicked in the head by her horse and she sustained a brain injury. I went to Dallas on Thursday and checked out a place called "Our Childrens House" for her continued rehab. Since I have had a lot of experience with neuro rehab, I went for Ann. It is a good place. Shay is leaving the Childrens Hospital at St. Francis in Tulsa for Dallas bright and early on Monday morning. Please remember Shay and her mother, Ann, in your prayers.

ALL- WE HAD THE WEIRDEST POWER OUTAGE IN MY BUILDING LAST NIGHT. SOME HAD NO POWER IN THEIR KITCHENS, SOME, NO POWER IN THEIR BATHROOMS, SOME, JUST THEIR ICE BOXES WERE OUT, SOME, ALL THEIR POWER WAS OUT, BUT MY POWER WAS ON ALL NIGHT. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ANYTHING WAS WRONG UNTIL I WENT OUT TO WALK MY DOG. THE ELEVATORS WERE OUT SO I HAD TO TAKE THE STAIRS. IT WASN'T SO BAD GOING DOWN, BUT CLIMBING FIVE FLIGHTS OF STAIRS JUST ABOUT KILLED ME. BY THE TIME I GOT UP TO MY DOOR I COULD HARDLY BREATHE, I WAS WHEEZING AND GASPING FOR AIR. I HEARD SOMEONE WAS TRAPPED IN THE ELEVATOR AND THE FIRE DEPT.HAD TO GET THEM OUT. I SURE HOPE THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN ANYTIME SOON. MY LEGS HURT TOO, FROM GOING UP AND DOWN THE STAIRS. I'M NOT AS YOUNG AS I USED TO BE....

Janis Ann (Jan) Dirickson (Marshall)

We had the white stuff and it's been 10 above with the wind chill below 0, way to cold this early....But the fish are biting so we keep on fishing everyday. (Set lines) it's really a lot of fun.

It is 9:30 pm and the temp is 55, so I won't complain. It will be great sleeping weather tonight with the windows open. I'm just not ready for the short daylight hours and the long evenings and the thought that winter is just around the corner.

If this rain doesn't stop I will be looking for a place to have a breakdown! Our first graders have not had recess in 3 weeks due to the rain...if it is not raining the playground is too wet!!

Jan-I love to visit Colorado when it is snowing...but I don't know if I could live there all the time!

Betty-I am so sorry to hear about your friend's daughter. Let me know if I can do anything while they are here in Dallas.

Paul-I hope you are fully recovered from your surgery! I hope you had someone to help you when you got home! It is awful when you don't have someone to help out!

I hope eveyone in September had a great Birthday! I have not had a lot of time to get on the site. School, grandbabies and daddy have kept me busy. Bill and I went to Miami for a 40 year reunion of the 1969 National Football Champonship team. It was awesome!

All - I have been putting in a lot of hours and haven't even checked the Forum for 2 weeks. Ditto on the rain! We did have a beautiful 64 degree day today. It was wonderful for fall break and a great day to go with the grandkids to the Pumpkin Patch!

Betty - I just now read about the girl that you asked prayer for and I will pray for her. The good thing is, her age is still on her side. Sometimes younger ones recover faster because the brain is a little more "plastic" and new neurons can take over the job of damaged nerves (to a degree). If she comes home and needs home health, contact me. We talked before about the difference in speech paths with medical experience verses only school experience. I could try to help her find someone.

Judy - I got the ice cream cones from the Dr. a few times and it was almost worth being sick. Didn't the old Rexall have ice cream (hand dipped)? I think that's where I went to cash in on the ice cream coupons. I do remember hanging out there on Sat afternoons (I think we already talked about that)in "curler caps" and cutoffs.
The new Rexall was really something. At some point, I think Betty got the coveted job (for girls) there.
I remember hearing rumors that Bob Haslett had a refridgerater in his bedroom! That's not nearly as big a stretch now, as it was then.

Kids have gone to college with small fridges for a long time now. I went with a stereo record player, small hot plate, an alarm clock and eletric curlers. That was the greatest extent possible of technology to my mind. Computers were room size and I never understood the "code" - for the most part, I still don't.

Carla - You really do have my sympathy on indoor recess - they just need to get the wiggles out.

Mary Ann- I worked at Haslett's for a few months before getting a job with "benefits" at ESH. One day while at work, I told a customer I would be quitting at the end of August go to ESH, and they mistook what I said to mean I was going to college. (ya know like NSC or OSU or NEO) I didn't even try to straighten out her thinking.

Yes, the Hasletts did have a small fridge in their bedroom. Their house was beautiful, and their master bedroom was fabulous. It had a huge walk-in cedar lined closet and a master bath with an extra long double sink mirrored vanity, (which was where the fridge was located) and it had french doors that opened to the pool. For 1970 it was top of the line nice! I thought it was heaven on earth. I stayed with Jayne Ann and Lisa one weekend when they went out of town, and it was a like a vacation for me.

Carla - Thanks for offering to help Ann and Shay. Shay is doing well. She will be in-patient at Our Childrens House" until November 19, at which time she will have another evaluation. At that time, they will decide on further in-patient or out-patient rehab.

Mary Ann - If you could help me find her a good neuro out-patient rehab, it would be great. I am going to speak to Dr. Andrew, Joe's neurologist to see if there is a good one in Joplin. When I spoke to the staff in Dallas, they told me that Shay would probably need out-patient rehab at least 3 days a week, once she comes home. I am going to be visiting facilites, so if you know of someplace that you believe to be acceptable and good in neuro, please let me know. My cell phone is 244-0328.

Thought we were going to get sun today, but got a little more rain this morning and still no sun. It is cloudy and 50 degrees today. Depressing!

Everyone have a nice weekend. Watched the OU game! UGH Will be watching OSU later tonight. Hope they do better!

Judy - It's interesting that the Hasletts lived for a number of years in a dinky house at the other end of the block where I grew up. Bob was such an imposing man, I don't know how he managed to live there without getting claustrophobia. I remember when they built their new home, it was one of the showplaces of the town.

All - It's in the 70's now in San Francisco - so eat your hearts out.

Betty - I'll talk to the girls that I used to work with at the hospital here, about out patient facilities. In general, I think St John's and St Francis are very good - but I don't know about their adolescent therapy.
All - Betty Haslett used to get her hair done at my mom's shop and was a really nice lady. I remember her telling my mom that she just about ripped Jayne Ann's head off for jumping in their pool with her good boots on (she thought to impress the kids that were there). She later found out that someone had fallen in that couldn't swim.
Judy - I'm sure you did get an education at ESH, whether the woman ever realized it or not! My brother-in-law worked in recreation there, as a young man. He had some pretty interesting experiences - especially at the dances!
