Jan- I can drive the tractor it just takes a little more finesse to operate the front end loader than I possess. I was the lucky one that day, it was 24 degrees with a light wind and Dean got chilled to the bone driving the tractor, I was toasty warm using the shovel.

Johnny, so glad to hear you are home. Hope you made it before the bad weather hit.

In reference to being told to watch what you eat, I think most of us are on the seafood diet. We "see" it and we eat it!

Johnny, so glad to hear you're home and doing well. Do what you're told so the next hospital visit will be short and sweet. That "Mrs Dash" is pretty tasty we use it a lot. Take care.

Judy, I was a slow learner. I always opened the gates to feed, or was in the bucket to go onto some damn roof. I even (stupid stupid stupid me) got to crawl out onto the ice to reach under the ice when a bunch of equally stupid cows fell thru, and pull them up one by one to slip a rope around their necks while Dick in the nice safe warm tractor could pull them out..yep slow learner.

Mary Ann, as they say with, age comes wisdom. I would never be so stupid again. And I shutter to think my kids would be as dumb as I was. At the time it seemed the only solution, but yes it was very very careless and STUPID. We had some incredible adventures when we were on the ranch and some very dangerous. These truly aren't "BS stories," we just did what we had to do, and maybe that's why Dick stayed with the ranch when it sold 3 times. He managed a 100,000 acre ranch on sometimes a shoe string budget for such wealthy people that it would boggle you minds. And lots of times he only had me and the boys to help him, and believe me the boys even as little shavers were more help than me. I tend to whine. I know that's a surprise to you all. But that's just the way it was, and we loved it. Jan

Jan - I have no doubt that you and Dick were meant for each other and that you found your nitch in life. Not everyone does that and I think it's great. The driving on the ice thing is really what boggles my mind! But hey, you weren't bored! That's what you call life, well lived!
Lavanna - We had ice and snow ( always ice first), but far as I know, we Okies are ok - except for Steve's mother in law, in Duncan, Ok. ALmost the whole town was out of power and I don't know if it has been restored yet.

Mary Ann, meant for each other or he had a heck of a big insurance policy on me that I didn't know about. Have a great week.

Carla Ray Williams (Yocum)

Mary Ann- You are so right! I would never climb out on the ice...I would be too cold and I know if the cattle fell in the ice is not safe! Animals are replaceable good women aren't! It would probabbly break one of my nails or worse!
Steve-I do not know who it is! Do you know? I can not believe Sharon married Adam and that Tucker is Kathryn's son!!!
Lavanna-It is bad in Oklahoma. My cousin's wife has not been able to go to school for the past three days! I hear more is coming on Wednesday and Thursday! The snow line stopped in Denton about 20 miles north of me! But it has been very cold! I have stayed in and kept warm by the fire with my hot chocotate! Sugar free...ugh!
Johnny-Glad to hear you are doing well! Keep doing what they say! Keep us posted!
Jan-no way could I live where you do! Does it ever get hot? I get cold just thinking of how cold you must be!

Carla, it sounds like Tx and Ok are really getting hit with this lousy weather. I sure hope that darn Groundhog finds spring and sends it forth. It's pretty nippy here, 7 above right now, but warming to 20 tomorrow, if the wind doesn't blow that's pretty good. It does get hot in MT, but no humidity. We do have mosquitos really nasty ones and more than you can imagine. Summer is a bit of a challenge, not many outside deck parties unless you spray all around your house and yard with toxic bug spray (the label says not so, but how do you know)? But we don't have the crowds and so far not so much crime. It's basically what you get use to and what you deem important. I do like MT and Hinsdale is a nice community, but I do miss the country life. To clairfy the ice story, Dick was in the tractor which was on the bank not on the ice, but up here we do drive on ice when we go ice fishing but only when the temp's have been cold enough long enough. I did take a chance going out there. I did have the rope with me which was hooked to the tractor, it still wasn't the smartest thing I've done but we still were able to save several head and I survived thanks to God. It really wasn't a big deal (risky and maybe not a well thought out plan)but at the time we just had to re-act. But thank you for your and Mary Ann's concern I wish I had had it 20 yrs ago. I never told my folks about this, mom had a fit when she found out I operated the cat. But that was only when the horse fell into the well.

Jan-Have you considered writing a book about your life on the Ranch? I would buy it! It sounds like you had incredible adventures! A horse in the well!!!! You could tell me stories for hours! I always liked to sit on my granddaddy's lap and listen to his stories! He drove cattle on the Honeywell and Chisom Trails when he was young! He was born in 1877 and had great stories about his adventures! I loved when his old cronies would come to visit and I would sit on the porch on Foreman Street and listen to their tales! I wish I had written them down or recorded them but I did not realize how important they would be to the future generations and my Geneology quest!
Steve-Are you sure or are they just making us think that?
TYR is always making you think one thing and surprising you later with someone or something you never thought about!!

Jan - What? You operated on a cat? And I don't mean to be smug, but Oklahoma horses know never to go in the well alone - they always have a buddy ready to reel them up in the little bucket.

Janis Ann (Jan) Dirickson (Marshall)

Mary Ann, Well MT horses don't like to go into wells alone either, this one had my husband on his back when he went in. The hole was covered by regrowth and down they went, butt first or should I say two butts first. Dick was very lucky to get away without much damage. The saddle horn actually helped to keep the horse from falling further down the hole. The only thing sticking out of the hole was from the horn up, two front legs neck and head. Dick took my horse and rode to the house which was about 3 miles, got his D7 cat, and came back, while I stayed and tried to keep Dunnie calm. We did get him out, he was a little nuts and since I couldn't reach Dick's stirrups I got to bring the cat home.
Carla, life was never dull on the ranch and we have lots of stories to tell, but I'd need Mary Ann's keen wit, vocabulary, and writing style to make it a "Best Seller" maybe she and I could collaborate!
