Gene,
We document all our hunts. Give me an email address and I'll send the full story of this hunt when it is finalized later this week or next week.
The closest we got to "sticking" an elk on this hunt was near opening morning. We spotted four bulls about five hundred yards away right after sending out a cow call. We scrambled to set up a spotting scope to score the elk and get their exact bedding locations. While doing this three bulls appeared to our left about 150 yards away and caught us completely off guard. While focusing on those nearby elk, another one came in behind us to within 25 yards and surprised the hell out of us when he scented us and shook the ground as he beat feet away from us.
As far as packing out elk goes, on a tiny one (~500 lbs, as seen in your picture) you can quarter it and carry the quarters out on a pack frame on your back. For more average sized bulls (~600 to 750 lbs) you have to take the rear quarters out on sleds, with the rest on your back. The monsters (~1000 lbs) have to be deboned in the field to get them out.
In this hunt, we had an ATV at the ready back in camp that could access all the hunting areas. I once dated a woman for 3.5 years and she was convinced that I only dated her to have access to her horses for packing out purposes. Women are so perceptive!
The real hunt for me will be the weekend of 13 September when muzzleloading season starts. Last year I got two new hunters within 30 yards of the biggest bull I've ever seen (in the wild or on a wall somewhere). One hunter got "buck fever" and didn't shoot, so the animal got away. We've scouted this bull and he's still right there in the same avalanche chute. Only catch is that there is a large bear right in the same area, so we'll have to watch our backside. Stay tune for another two weeks!
As far as big guns go, I developed a 50BMG load a couple months ago for a friend to use next year in the Craig, CO area. This guy complains that the elk stand at 600 yards and just stare at him.
Next time you're in the NM area, head North on I-25 and give me a call.
B. Noz.
