School Story:

For a while, each day before our Social Studies class with Art Jackson, Ron Barrett and I would collaborate on a new segment of a serialized historical narrative of Art's life before he came to Loretto, which I illustrated in sensitive chalk renderings on the board. Art would spend the first several minutes of each class erasing the story so he could use the chalkboard for more academic purposes. Tibetan Buddhists heard about this and were inspired to develop the sand mandala, painstakingly created over a period of weeks, then dumped in a river.

I remember spending several days making cloth-and-hair braids and borrowing a black Hassidic hat from a local synagogue so that I could lip-synch to "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" as Boy George at a talent show late in 1984. I can't remember if the Talent show was canceled or if I just chickened out. Either way, I think we are all a little better off it never happened.
