BA-English, UT Austin; MA-English, Lamar University-Beaumont. After teaching high school English for a few years, I joined Perry in his family's retail lumber business. From parsing sentences and studying poetry to selling 2X4s and roofing was quite a leap, but the change proved agreeable. In 1991, we closed the business and retired. Though we had both found time for some community volunteer work and were able to squeeze in some wonderful trips both here and abroad, we weren't able to spend blocks of time exploring various interests. Of those we tried, birdwatching "took," and for ten years we spent hours and hours in the field, mostly close to the Gulf Coast which was minutes away from Pt. Arthur. Volunteering at the Audubon sanctuaries in High Island provided close encounters with both the flora and fauna, as well as with visitors from all over the world.
Since moving to Austin, other interests have attracted us. I am a docent at the Blanton Museum of Art on the UT campus and am always happy to guide visitors through the museum. For me, being back in Austin is just the BEST.
A few memories: dissecting a fetal pig with Bill Marshall and Byron W. in Biology class (and just what parts do you think the two were eager to show me?), Mrs. Gray's Latin class (Sally Carroll's report on Papyrus), running around town with Pat and Jan in Dr. Hackerman's navy blue beetle and Mrs. Bennett's dark green Pontiac (Jan knew the lyrics to virtually every song we heard on the radio), and, in general, enjoying the great good fortune of being at AHS, receiving a solid education and being among a group of really fine and diverse young people.
