I used to look forward to church because I'd see Gary there. He was the funniest person I'd ever met and I knew I'd have a chuckle that'd make my day.

I am sad to hear that we have lost Gary, a good man and friend to all. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends for their loss of their loved one

Ever since elementary school, I remember Gary as being both the funniest guy in class and somewhat prone to mischief.  This continued at McCallum in Mrs. Harris’ math class, where Gary and Donnie Howard liked to exchange messages, by whispering, passing notes, throwing things, or whatever. Mrs. Harris was an excellent, demanding teacher who wanted no shenanigans in her room. In an attempt to thwart the Gary-Donnie Show going on in the first row, she tried moving Donnie to a back-row desk so that the two could not connect easily.

In those days, most of our class time involved the teacher writing material on the blackboard for all of us to copy down in our notes. This put Mrs. Harris at a disadvantage when she was writing because she had to turn her back to the class and couldn’t keep an eye on her two troublemakers. Once the guys did something that made us all snicker so she knew something was up. She stopped writing, stood in the aisle next to Gary’s desk, and talked while trying to figure out what was going on. Gary looked up at her with adoring eyes, his chin resting on his right fist and his elbow on the desk. I couldn’t see what Donnie was doing, but it slowly became clear that Gary, ever the daring rebel, was talking with Donny in sign language using his right-hand fingers. Mrs. Harris never did figure out what the deal was. But that day Gary’s loveable sassiness won a place in my heart as someone willing to defy the powers that be and have fun, no matter what the consequences, including another trip to the vice principal’s office.

Rest in peace, Gary. You left your happy mark on this world and are surely now with our maker in the amazing place He prepared for you.

I was glad to have Gary as a friend -- for one thing, he was the only kid smaller than me in our class at Brentwood Elementary. :^)
