Remember the good old days of cruisin' round the Tastee Treet? Well, you'll be saddened to hear that the building is gone. After many years and several owners (the last of which served Mexican food), a local dentist bought the land and is going to build a dental office. I didn't know until recently that the father of two classmates, Sharon & Karen Maberto, built (or had built) the original building. Does anyone remember it was just a little ice cream stand, and there was a miniature golf course next to it?

I remember it well. My grandparents who lived on 4th Street in Bicknell would take me to the Tastee Treet,(in their Hudson), when I was about 4 and I would always order the strawberry ice, a concoction made with ice cream, strawberries, and ice. It was good. I hate to hear the building is coming down.

Very sad to see "The Treet" fade into history. Lottsa good memories.
Without a doubt, my favorite memory is when our (Pat, Wayne, Bill Posey and myself) band "rocked the Treet". If I'm correct, we played there three times. First time (1969 ?) was in the newly added dining room and the other two times were outside.
Thanks to Doris (Pat's late mother) for talking Gib Kirchoff into letting us play our music at "The Treet".
I know there were pictures taken on at least one of those dates......would sure be nice if we could locate them and post them here. Grab ? Wayne ? Care to comment or know of any pics ?

I for one would like to see some old pictures of the place...when i go through there now adays it is passing through and I stop and see my mom and if I have time visit my sister and brothers.
Another thing I'd like to see is the old Scout newspaper....sorry, is that what they called it....i worked on it for awhile but don't even remember the name...funny to think now after all these years that is my business (publishing) and has been for many many years....among other things

Steve, I am waiting for kathy Watson to sign on. She was the editor of the Scout Newspaper. I worked on it also. If I can dig one out of the attic, and scan it, I will post it.

My mother used to cook at the treat. A little bit of me died when it closed.

Speaking of the Tastee Treet being replaced by a dentist's office, isn't it amazing how much change has taken place along that stretch of Hwy. 67 since we graduated from NKHS.
If you recall, there was a big ditch next to the Treet (on the northside). It has been filled in and there is now a car wash there.

Mullins' Sunoco is gone, having been replaced by a Subway (originally Dairy Queen).

The tavern next to Mullins' was relaced by McDonalds. I believe the name of the tavern was Thompson's when we were in school. It was later the Pour House and lastly the Four Winds. I played music there a few times in the 1970's with Bicknell native and 1950's Memphis recording artist Ray "Living Legend" Scott (1929 - 1999).
NOTE OF INTEREST:For a bio of Ray Scott go to WWW.ROCKABILLY.NL/ARTISTS/RSCOTT.htm. Ray bought the old Eagles building in downtown Bickell, renaming it "The Bird Cage" nightclub. He also owned Great Scott Taxi Service. He was a colorful character, to say the least !!

Dino's Cafe and gas station has changed hands several times over the years. Most noteably, it was Moreland's Pizza in the 70's.....run by Steve "Luigi" Moreland. More recently it was remodeled and his now Cabello's Rest. and Beauty Salon. NOTE: Remember how busy Dino's Cafe was after a NKHS football game ?

Farther south of the Treet, Kim Schroeder (Bill's wife) has an accounting business where Carter's Discount gas station used to be.
Also, out that way, Ducharme's (sp?) Cafe was bulldozed several years ago.

As Bob Dylan said, "the times they are a changin".

P.S. - For any of you who no longer live in the area and have not been home in good while, downtown Bicknell looks like a ghost town, as do all the small towns in the NK area.

Jeff and I were talking about businesses "way back when"....Don't forget Keasling's Market where Casey's is now, and William's Marathon across from it, Standard station where BP is, Bastide's Transmission where Regions bank is. How about Betty's cafe out by the fairgrounds? The root beer stand, End 'O Day motel? Check out your yearbooks ad sections for a look back at businesses in the late 60's-1970. Look at the phone numbers. Do you remember yours? Our family's number was 421-K. Jeff's was 7F11.

My phone number was 137-W......"three longs" and "one short". Party line numbers had a letter in them, private lines had numbers only. Remember you would just crank the phone and the operator would come on and say "number please ?"

Here is a funny story told to me by Warren Singleton (FHS '57) relating to the old phone system. Warren had just moved to Arizona and was trying to call his parents back in Freelandville.
With the old phone system, he was not able to make a long distance call direct to Freelandville. Therefore, he had to go through the long distance operator.
When the long distance operator connected to the Freelandville operator (Pansy Schaefer), the long distance operator asked Pansy to connect to Ray Singleton at #????. Pansy looks out the window and noticed Ray's car was down the street at Ruth Hollingsworth's house. (This could only happen in a small town).......Pansy says to the long distance operator.."Ray and his wife are down at Ruth's house, do you want me to ring Ruth ?" The long distance operator was speechless !!

Don't talk about the telephone operators! Donna DeMoss & I worked at Bicknell as operators after graduation. I think we worked almost a year before Bicknell went to dial service. It was a hassle when it snowed. Everyone had to call everyone else when it snowed! We were swamped with all the calls. We were also the orginal 911! We called the fire dept., the police & ambulance. It doesn't seem possible but Freelandville actually had dial service before Bicknell. Good old days!

Our house was 91F6. That was 6 longs we had to listen for. If it only got to 5 longs that was either Mike Land's number or my Uncle Paul's, I can't remember which. We had a few other people on our party line. It is hard to believe we had 4, 5, or 6 longs going off all day in our house. I guess we didn't talk as much then. I'll admit it; we were good at listening on our party line without being caught.

OK.....since you 'fessed up Dick...........I admit we listened in on our party line, also !!

By the way, I remembered your number 91F6. I remember calling you in Jr. High inviting you to go with us to the show at the Colonial Theatre.....usually on Sunday evening. Pat's number was 24. Telligman's number was 20. Can't recall Boberg's number, but seems like it also had an "F" in it.

Lu - Thanks for bringing up the Tastee Treet, as that has sparked some very fond memories of our car hop days. I started working there as a car hop the summer between my 8th grade and Freshman year. Best of both worlds..as I made 35 cents an hour (plus tips!) and was able to be where the action was when everyone cruised through. Doris and Bernice worked in the kitchen and watched out for us..lots of motherly advice and good food. My Mother still mentions periodically that I was able to buy my own school clothes through high school because I worked there thru the summer between my Junior and Senior year.

Remember when Gib put up that huge sign...now that was progress.

My own kids, as well as yours, were able to have ice cream at the Tastee Treet. It was hard for them to believe that it was such a lively place to hang out. :)

Yes, Judy, the Treet was a very good place to work and hang out. We were all like family. Made me want to cry when I first saw the building gone. I too paid for school stuff with the earnings. 35 cents an hour plus tips. Wow. Of course, hamburgers were 25 cents, ice cream 5 cents, etc.

Thanks to Jean Ann Miller, I was able to make extra calls to Freelandville!

Don Dyer: I never knew your mom worked there? What are you doing these days?
Richard: We are thinking of coming to Charlotte for the race later in the summer......if we go I will give you a call a week or so before we come down........

Jeff Siewers posted some great pictures of his grand kids. I don't have any yet, but I would challenge those of you who do, to also post some pictures of your families.

Hey everybody! I'm sorry I took so long to sign on..I got Rich's card through my brother, Gary, in SC, but had lent my laptop computer to my oldest son to do some on-line courses and now it's acting up a bit...wow, I am not sure if I have a copy of the newspaper or not..hate to admit that since I worked weekly on that paper for two years...remember the senior edition we decided to do...I did have that edition for awhile, but I'm not sure if I still do...I'll look but would appreciate if Rich or some one else comes up with some copies as well...this is great!

OK......What is the deal with everyone from Freelandville moving to North Carolina ?????
Dick, Mike "Machine Gun" Land and now Kathy ! Is there something there that I need to know about ?

04/29/08 07:58 PM #21

Richard Finke

I just wrote Kathy an email. We live about 30 miles from each other. I knew Kathy's mom and dad were in Chester, just south of Charlotte, but I did not know where Kathy had ended up. It is strange that 3 of our 15 or so classmates from Freelandville have ended up within 40 miles of each other. Joe Bubenzer "69" lives about 20 miles away on Lake Norman. Tom, when are you moving down? You could live here in the winter and back in the center in the summer.

04/30/08 06:37 PM #22

Tom Held

Sorry Dick, I will not be moving to NC anytime soon. I bleed Freelandville Dutchman blue. I could never leave "the center of the universe" !!

KATHY: Tell Gary I said hello. He was one of the "late Saturday night crowd" that used to assemble at Milt's Sinclair station (friendly service at friendly prices) in the late 1960's. Fond memories, for sure.

P.S. - Does anyone know what Kathy's nickname was at Freelandville Jr. High ??

04/30/08 11:39 PM #23

Kathy Watson

Hey Tom! I've truly gone southern because I say hey instead of hi and swore I never would....I'll tell Gary hey for you! As for nicknames in Jr High, was that when the girls had guy names for awhile? I seem to remember being called George..my second husband was named George...wonder if that was a premonition, just kidding...if there was another nickname for me, please tell me, I guess I want to know? Hmmmm..

It was GEORGE !!!! Can you believe I remembered that !
