Kent Harting

My job includes the reclamation of abandoned coal mines, subsidence repair, revegetation, ditch construction, wetland construction, road reconstruction, mitigation of acid mine drainage, and any other component of mine reclamation. I have been with the DNR over 20 years, and worked as a construction inspector prior (13 yrs.) to the DNR. I am planning to retire within the next three or four years.

I have lived in Indiana, Wyoming, and California since 1970.

What I remember the most are the sports events that I participated in, but even more, the years before I entered high school. Particularly, the great NK basketball teams (after consolidation) of the mid 1960's, and the great sectional win in 1964. The NK football squads of the '68, '69, and '70 teams also hold a warm spot in my fading memories. Also, the homecoming parades, games, and dances, the trips to road games on the NK fan bus, the Friday night sock hops in the gym after the big games, and all of great bands (Corvettes, Olivers, etc.) that played at the dances. I kind of did not care much for classes, but enjoyed drafting and phys. ed. classes, and playing baseball.
