Update on Jim Phillips:

All former BHS Exporters... Sad news to report about Jim Phillips. His cancer has progressed dramatically and he's decided not to pursue treatment. He stated "without quality, there is no quantity in life". Please pass on and send cards and letters in care of MD Anderson or home at 1322 W. 11th Street, Freeport, TX 77541. We want him to know how much we appreciate him and all that he did for so many!

From Mr. Phillips' daughter, Amy: .........Update on my dad..... Infection is clearing up, adrenal gland biopsy set for Thursday, and brain surgery is scheduled for next Monday. Please keep the prayers coming.

Barbara Ludeman (Frazier)

It is so good to be able to come back here and catch up on all that is going on.  Such beautiful prayers...   My heart goes out to you, Margaret.  I say "Amen" to the prayers that have been posted for you and for every one of you.  We all have challenges to face of one kind or another.  Please, consider yourselves hugged.

My mother, Ann Ludeman, is doing well.  She is currently a resident at the Plantation Health Center in Lake Jackson.  I am told that it is across the street from the hospital.  They keep her busy with activities and physical therapy.  They say she may be allowed to start putting weight on her leg in another 2 or 3 weeks.  The surgical incisions are healing nicely and friends and family visit her often.  My brother, Donnie, has been so good to keep me updated and send me pictures.  I am hoping to get to fly out for a visit sometime soon, myself.  Please pray for God's will and timing and provision for me to visit.  Wouldn't it be great if I could come in time for the Rock 'n Roll party?

I want to share a picture of my Mom and brother with you.  I hope this turns out okay.  Never tried it before.  Mom still has a little bruise over her eye from when she fell.  This was taken with Donnie's phone on Mother's Day.

P.S.  Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.  God is so good.  Words fail me.  It is such a blessing to read the messages here.  Ya'll take care and God bless you all with His Mercy, Grace and Peace.  May you each be especially sensitive to His presence with you, His big warm arms around you and His Love for you and God help you all to be able to receive all that He would give to you - for your own needs and for the needs of everyone you come into contact with.  In the precious name of our Lord and Savior and Redeemer, Jesus, the Christ, Son of the Living and Faithful, All-powerful God ... Amen.

Suzette Gustine (Moore)

Oh my goodness, Barbara, your mom looks great. I am  glad that she is doing so well. I remember when she was one of the Brownie Troop #42 leaders. I found a picture of troop recently when I was going through some of my mom's photos. Brownies was a fun, carefree time in my life. I remember looking into the magic mirror pond and making S'mores in Jasmine Hall. We had a big troop and quite a few of us stayed in scouts for awhile. I stayed in through 7th grade, I think.

Margaret, my prayers are for your healing and for your strength.

God's blessings to all.

Suzette

Happy Birthday, Suzette-hope you enjoy it.  Thank you for your prayers and thoughts.  I am doing better right now.  I don't know when any treatments will start, so just playing the waiting game right now.

JERI MILLS - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!  HOPE YOU HAVE MANY MORE!

05/21/10 11:34 AM #2797

Barbara Ludeman (Frazier)

Oh, Suzette, you even remember the troop number?  Wow!  That totally escapes me.  I do remember that magic mirror pond, being turned around several times and then looking into it.  I don't have any pictures from those days.  If you can, could you try to post that picture somewhere in here so I can see it?  One of my favorite memories are the stories that the mother of one of the girls would tell us.  She was able to tell them in such a way that she had our rapt attention - and she never had to read them from a book!

Thank you all for the comments about my mother's picture.  That isn't one of the best I've got but it was the only one handy at the time.  I think she has grown older rather beautifully, myself.  She just got a new assessment from the doctor.  They have been giving her non-weight bearing physical therapy.  On Thursday, they upped her to minimal weight bearing therapy.  Donnie said they let her stand up using a walker and she was able to take about 6 steps.  After being off her feet for a while, she is a little week and one of her feet turns in a bit but they said that is common and her foot will straighten out as she gets used to using those muscles again.

Margaret, waiting has always been one of the things that I find hard to deal with, in my life.  May God bless your time of waiting with a refreshing renewal in mind and spirit and body.

Hello classmates: Wanted to pass on a bit of news our dear Carrol has broken a vertebra in her back. Please lift her up in prayer as she is in a lot of pain and hopefully will have surgery on Tuesday if the Dr. can get it scheduled. She has always been there for us lifting us up so let's lift her up and ask our Lord to hold her in his loving arms and heal her quickly.

Margaret my prayer is that he will also heal you quickly so you can get your treatments started and get past it and be healed as only the Great Healer can. We love you and will keep you and H L in my prayers.

I will post more about Carrol's surgery when we find out. May you all have a blessed day.

Margaret Dubois (Ammons)

Thank you, Susie-I was thinking about Carrol-Please let us know the details and if there is anything that I can do.

I am doing well-staples and drains are gone and I feel good.  I go back to the dr. on June 1.  Maybe I will learn more about the future then.  The not knowing is the tough part. I just want to get on with it and get it done.

I have confidence that God is with me and all will be well.

Gerrie Sue, thanks for the update on Margaret and the news on Carrol...

Dear Lord, we thank you for Your abiding presence in our lives just like You promised.  We ask You to continue to heal Margaret in the wake of her surgery.  We ask You to grant her doctors wisdom as they weigh the options for her further treatment.  We also ask You to touch Carrol's back with Your healing virtue.  We pray for a quick healing for her.  Lord, please let these two precious women feel Your touch in their lives as You take away their pain and worries.  We love You Lord and praise You...in Jesus Name we pray...Amen

Surgery was succesful; found a 2nd fractured vertebrae but left it to heal as it was not as severe.  I have the BEST friends in the world.  Susie Patton is a jewel - she took off of work to take me to Houston at the crack of dawn; I have dibs on her but suggest you all get on her friend list. So glad I got Tammy Jeffers Peel in the divorce - she is a kid (27) but hauled me around to doctors' and hospital all week!  Thank you all for prayers & support, I'm going night-night.

Margaret, He is with us always and we don't ever know what is coming next but He does.

Jeremiah 29:11 (New International Version)

11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

In case you are hot & boooooooored this is the back story as THIS back issue is different than the ongoing back saga.

I have an inversion table in the garage that I use for traction.  WELL.  I've used it 1,000s of times. Saturday 5/15/20 I was a bit reckless & threw my hands over my head losing control of the table and my feet came loose (that's an important part when you are hanging upside down by your feet) and I FELL.  I FELL HARD.  Landed on my head & the rest of the body flipped over in a very ugly way. HUGE knot on head, accompanying voluminous throwing up, I thought I had broken my neck. Called a nearby friend to come fix an ice pack but she called an ambulance.  X-rays & C-scans revealed a fractured T12 vertebrae and small concussion (YAY hardhead!).  I've been flat of my back & taking pain meds until I could get surgery scheduled today.  Another friend cowboyed up & moved in for awhile. Gotta loooove friends & neighbors - they've kept me in food, mowed the yard, hauled me to different doctor appointments, additional C-scans and MRI and kept me company during my unfortunate, enforced horizontal time.  The MRI revealed a second vertebrae fracture (T4) which, oddly enough, validates my whiiiiiiiiiineeeinnnnnggg.  I knew I hurt but I felt like a big baby.  Sorry I had to ignore so many inquiries but truly, I've been in bed and in bed only.

I'm so excited today because though I am not 'normal' I am sooo very much better.

p.s. I would put the inversion table out by the curb but: 1) I can't yet, 2) it belongs to my brother and 3) I'm afraid somebody else would fall off.  I am ready to do public service annoucements about the dangers!

Gary, your prayers always touch my heart and spirit.  Thanks for leading us all to the Throne Room where we lay our collective amens to your petitions at the feet of Jesus.  God bless you!

Lynn Rasberry (Brooks)

Well, Carrol, I am so glad you are doing better.  I had heard the "rumors" about you falling off an inversion table on your head, but thought, oh, well, certainly our Carrol would not be doing anything like that!  I'm so glad the doctors were able to put you back together and to give substance to your whining.  But, even tho you are feeling so much better, please do not overdo it!  No gardening, no mowing, and be very careful picking up your babies!  And please know, that I will be very happy to come by and bring you food, beverage, offer company, take the dogs out, etc., any time.  Our Lord was truly watching over you.  I love ya girl, even if Elvis is not on your bucket list! Glad you'll be ready for fun and games in June!

Well known teacher, runner, and writer Bill Shaw, 70, died at home surrounded by his family on Friday, May 14, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born May 29, 1939, Shaw grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1957. After six months active duty in the United States Marine Corps, in California, he returned to Shreveport to serve out the remainder of his Marine Reserve term in active reserve until 1962 and in inactive reserve until 1964, when he received an honorable discharge with the rank of corporal.

He attended Centenary College in Shreveport and finished his BA in English, in the fall of 1963 and stepped immediately into an English teaching position at C.E. Byrd High School, Shreveport, teaching grades 11 and 12. In 1964 he married Jane Worley, also an English teacher and his devoted wife of forty-six years.

In 1964 the couple moved to Freeport, Texas where they were both hired to teach English at Brazosport High School. As Shaw taught grades 11 and 12 and Jane taught grades 10 and 11, he worked on his master’s degree at Texas A&M University from 1968 to 1972, receiving his MA in English in the summer of 1972. He taught at Brazosport College in its initial year of operation in 1968 and was hired full time at Brazosport College in the summer he received his master’s degree. He continued post graduate work at the University of Houston Central Campus, and completed 42 graduate hours in English above his master’s degree while teaching full time at Brazosport College from summer 1972 to spring 2003, at which time he advanced to the rank of professor. During his tenure at Brazosport College, he taught courses in fundamental English, freshman composition, British literature, American literature, world literature, creative writing, news reporting and news writing, and was twice nominated for the Piper Professor Award and received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Teaching Excellence Award in 1994 and 1999. He served as editor of the Southern Association Self Study Report in 1983-84 and again in 1993-94. In addition, he developed the first distance learning courses for both the first and second semester of freshman composition. He also served as faculty advisor to the college newspaper, The Navigator, from 1997 to 2003 and stayed on part-time during the 2003 2004 academic year to teach journalism and to continue as newspaper advisor. In the fall of 2006, he also taught a Composition and Rhetoric Two class, and an American Literature I class for a teacher who was ill.

Nationally Shaw served as a member of the Academy of Poets and on the National Council of Teachers of English journal Teaching English in the Two Year College editorial board as consulting reader from 1996-2003, and as an active member of the NCTE regional organization. He also served as president of the Brazosport College Faculty Association.

Shaw has worked as a creative writer and journalist for most of his career and has published over 25 poems and one short story. He worked for The Facts newspaper as a regular columnist and correspondent for over 18 years, a staff writer for the Brazoria County feature magazine Image, and for the regional magazine Runner Triathlete News and for Inside Texas Running. He has published over 1500 articles.

Shaw retired from teaching in 2004 to devote himself more to writing and to polish his skills with computer programs and producing newsletters for the Brazosport Area Road Runners Association and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he also served as Lay Minister Leader, Communication Chairman, member of the Evangelism Committee, and as a lay reader and chalice bearer.

In his early forties in 1982, Shaw described himself as a “born-again runner” and joined the Brazosport Area Road Runner Association, where he served in various capacities. He was a member of the Houston Triathlon Racing Club, the American Running Club and USA Triathlon, and has served as newsletter editor, webmaster and committee director for the BARRA Firecracker 4 (a four mile race on Independence Day), as registration coordinator for the Surfside Beach Marathon and Half Marathon, and as secretary and publicity chair for the Brazosport Relay Triathlon since 1999. He completed thirty-four triathlons and ten marathons, including the New York Marathon.

Shaw is not only survived by his wife, Jane; but also by his mother, Ruth Shaw, of Clute; daughter, Kathleen; and son-in-law, Sam David, of Freeport; daughter, Lisa Shaw and her partner Nancy Michon, of Houston; grandchildren, Sarah David, of Freeport; Valerie David, of Angleton; and Anna David, of Austin; great-grandchildren, Avery and Joshua Cuellar, of Angleton; brother-in-law, Tommy Crenshaw Sr., of Waskom, Texas; and nephews Tommy Gene Crenshaw Jr. and Noel Dean Crenshaw, also of Waskom.

There will be a celebration of life held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19th at the Parish Hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Freeport, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

I received this from a c/o 1970 Exporter:

A group of former Bport students have gotten together and are going to speak at the next BISD board meeting in favor of the Brazosport baseball field being named after Jim Phillips.  I told them how to get on the agenda and who to speak to, and now we need to start sending out emails so that we can get massive amounts of people at the meeting in support.  I hear there might be some board members against this proposal.  It is a shame, as whether or not you agree with Jim Phillips’ political beliefs, he is an icon of Brazosport High School.  He deserves to be honored for that fact.
I know you have an “extensive” email list and if you could send this on, I would be appreciative.

Mike Cooper, a Bport grad, has agreed to speak on behalf of this proposal and will be given 5 minutes to address the board.  Anyone else interested in supporting this cause should show up at the meeting that night at the District Office, 301 W. Brazoswood Drive across from Brazoswood High School by 5:30.   The meeting is Tuesday, June 1

Please spread the word if possible.  The more people that show up the better!
