 Carrol,

I, too, am one of the guilty people who only read, but seldom post on the forum. You do a wonderful job and I sure would hate to see you give up because you believe that no posting means no participation. I certainly participate in reading posts by yourself and others that help me keep up on people who mean a lot but I would never know about without the message forum. And each time I log on & check in, I always know that at some point while reading, I will end up with a smile on my face or a tear in my eye. So, though it seems like many of us do not express our appreciation of all your efforts, please know that you have mine. And my thanks. Your posts are informative & entertaining and would be sorely missed. I especially like the recent ones that both you and Alice posted of the 2 renditions of the Hallelujah chorus. If not for you, I would have missed out on both. So, if we can cast ballots, I sure vote for you to stay on. No one could do the job any better.. Thank you so much.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (TRIBUTE TO OUR SOLDIERS)

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD
SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO
WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT
CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE, IN A LAND FAR
FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD
NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT
AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS
DAY, ALL IS SECURE."
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

To all my Class of '69 friends, I wish you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and an abundance of love and happiness throughout the new year.

John & I are thrilled to announce that we're going to be grandparents (finally).  Our son Scott and daughter-in-law Jennifer are expecting their first child in May.  That will certainly make a wonderful 2011 for us.  They live in Austin so we'll have to spoil the little one whenever we get the chance.

HAPPY NEW YEAR and love to you ALL too!

We were BLESSED to grow up in schools with open windows, unlocked doors and NO police on our campus. Please pray for Bay City ISD. The district is under a terroristic threat. My husband Bill had 3 to 4 students in each of his classes. Parents are scared to send their children to school. I remember the only thing that kept us home was cold weather!

I am posting Michael Poehl's short message on facebook informing us of his brother, Pat Poehl's death.  I know many of you knew Pat and would appreciate being informed.

Pat Poehl - Rest in Peace !!

My brother Pat had a massive heart attack this morning while walking his dogs. James Duncan, his business parnter, called 911, and administered CPR - but Pat did not survive. Great efforts by the EMTs, and the Breckenridge ER staff. Sad, sad day but thankful for living in Austin for the last 10 years, and ...creating some great memories with Pat .....     Michael Poehl.

Friends, I know we will keep the Poehl family in our prayers.  When the arrangements are finalized, I will post here.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Michael sent me his brother, Pat's, obituary.  Please keep the Poehl's in your prayers.

Pat was a founding father of Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Southwest Texas State, and he remained friends with many of the Delts through the years. Last summer’s reunion at Gruene, TX of the "Old Delts" was a fun time to spend with some life-long friends.

Pat initially worked for the State of Texas at the Water Quality Board, but spent most of his adult life following his dreams. His stint in the U S Army Reserves as a cook fueled his passion for the food industry, and he was partners in numerous food companies, including Earl Campbell Foods. Pat had many business interests during his career ranging from development of oil wells to his current role as Vice President of Anytime Foods. Gerald Klossner, his business partner, and Pat followed their dreams in the business world.

Pat was an avid golfer, and attended many spectator sports especially Longhorn events with his brother Michael Poehl. He and his business partner James Duncan had many golf matches with their friends, some of them quite legendary. Although there was very spirited competition it was the after golf time that made it a special event. If you knew Pat Poehl, you loved him.

Pat was a generous person who would give you his last nickel. It was not unusual for Pat to pick up a tab for a total stranger, and their family in a restaurant if he saw them celebrating a special occasion, and they never knew who did it. He lived his life as a giver, as an example of what it meant to give something to those who need it. Pat grew in faith, especially the last five years and never missed a mass at St. Catherine of Siena.

Pat’s parents – T.L. and Helen Poehl from Lake Jackson, TX preceded him in death. In addition to his former wife Marie Poehl and his loving daughter Jennifer Poehl, Pat is also is survived by his brother Michael Poehl, and wife Kathy, along with their sons Nicholas and Christopher. Also, by his brother Phillip of Austin, TX and wife Lynn Poehl of Nashville, TX and his brother Stephen of New Braunfels, TX. and his sons Jacob, Matthew, and Jared, as well as Pat’s constant companion who completed his life Ms. Terri Irwin of Lakeway, TX. "Sammie dog the travelin’ man", is waiting for Pat at the Rainbow Bridge, along with Champ and the other wonderful dogs he enjoyed during his life.

A reception by the family will be held at Cook-Walden Funeral Home at 6100 North Lamar Blvd. on Sunday – January 9, 2011 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, followed by a brief rosary service. Funeral services to celebrate Pat’s life will be held at St. Mary Cathedral at 203 East 10th Street, Austin ,TX at 10 a.m on Monday - January 10, 2011.  Private burial will follow.  Donations in honor of Pat should be made to Town Lake Animal Center.

Patrick Leon Poehl, age 63 passed away and ascended into Heaven on January 6, 2011 while walking his dogs at Town Lake. Pat was born in Freeport, TX on January 5, 1948, and spent his entire childhood in Lake Jackson, TX. He was a 1966 graduate of Brazosport High School before heading to San Marcos, Tx where he met his former wife Marie Moore Poehl. Both of them graduated from Southwest Texas State in 1971 when they moved to Austin, TX where Pat lived for the past 40 years. Jennifer Poehl , their daughter was born on January 22,1973. Jennifer remained the focal point of his life, and they both shared a love for dogs.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

So, I was wondering . . . for those of us who did NOT go on the cruise, do we some how avoid turning 60 this year?   It is a sacrifice I am willing to make, though it did look like fun.

01/15/11 09:32 PM #2961

Janice Mangum (Colwell)

Carrol, I hit sixty before the cruise, so there was no avoiding it for me.  It wasn't so bad, though.  It feels just like fifty-nine did!
