I don't even like the sound of "60." But I guess it's better than the alternative....

Pat Bass (Ray)

I can remember when 60 was old, old, old.....all the way up to this month when I realized how close it looms! Thirty wasn't bad, forty was tough, fifty wasn't bad at all, but SIXTY????? Where did the time go?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pat, I'm with you!!! When I turned 60 it hit me like a rock! Ugh. And yet inside me I still feel like I'm 16 years old. ;-)      Alice D. Smith

URGENT PRAYER NEED.  Michael and Kathy Poehl were in a serious car wreck last night.  Kathy is in ICU at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin with internal injuries, a broken arm and hip.  Michael's email didn't mention any injuries for himself but he is frantic for his Kathy.  Please pray.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

This was Michael's email at 4:11 Friday.

Kathy is out of surgery. They repaired her broken humerus with a steel nail, and also stabilized her rear pelvic with a pin. Kathy won't be able to bear weight on the right side for something like 6 - 8 weeks. She has long, painful road to recovery as the bones and nerves heal to allow her movement in her right arm. Kathy is in I C U, but we have not gotten to see her yet.
Please continue to pray for her recovery, and no complications from her surgery.
Thanks to all the wonderful friends and family who have been praying for us. We all need it...
and it is working !!

Looking at that picture of Michael's car, brought tears. My prayers go out to Michael and Kathy.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Just got this from Michael.  I spoke with him today and Kathy is cognizant.  Making sure Michael checks his blood pressure, 2 weeks to their son's wedding and communicating that Michael should go rest.
Please keep them in your prayers.
Carrol

Kathy had a restful afternoon. Earlier today she was breathing on her own, but they don't want to pull the intubation tube due to her flailed / broken ribs which makes her labor while breathing. They also discovered her left ankle is broken, and they booted it ( Thanks to our friend Dr. Nancy Robinson on noticing this, and calling it to their attention )
They are still trying to assess the nerve damage and determine what to do about her right arm.
I think her pain level went up, as they jostled her around for the MRI trip to check out the nerves in her shoulder. Late this afternoon they restarted the assisted breathing so they could up the pain meds. Concerns about pneumonia if too much pain meds are required to manage her ribs, resulting in shortened breathing.
So, a couple of visits today she was sedated and resting - although she did seem to recognize several visitors. Just hard to communicate when she can't talk due to intubation, and no use of her right arm.
She did get teary when her sister Suzy read her the anniversary card I gave her as today is our 39th wedding anniversary.
We hope to see more progress at 9 pm, but the nurse said they will keep her sedated and on breathing assist tonight so she can rest up.
Please continue to pray for her, along with a good path determined by her medical team. Her  resportory doc, Dr. Hines said she was doing real good - better than yesterday, but hard for us to see due to the communciations issue.
Thanks for the support and prayers.

From Michael Poehl on Sunday night:

Not much change today. Kathy is still in critical but stable conditions. Vital signs are good, but her pain was too much with the flailed / broken ribs ( # 4 through # 9 ), so they had her sedated to minimize the pain. The night nurse said she could feel her pulse better tonight in her right wrist, so this was a positive. Early today when the doctor was around she wiggled both toes, and moved her left fingers.
They will have a specialist look at her ribs tomorrow as this is the critical part that needs to be managed / repaired so she can breathe without pain, and get the intubation tubes out - which should lead to the next step after Intensive Care Unit.
So hard to see her like this, but the note below from her cousin Pat helps me understand when she is sedated her body can concentrate on healing.
Appreciate all the concerns, prayers and support as it is so needed.
Please continue to pray for the Lord to wrap his arms around Kathy and provide a healing path to full recovery.

Michael

An update from the Poehls from Monday night.

Kathy had a very good day today ! Thanks to you prayers to give her the courage, and strength to breathe on her own for over 13 hours. She went back on the ventilator late this evening to allow her to get a restful night. Perhaps they will extabate the breathing and feeding tubes tomorrow - which is a major step to recovery.

Please keep praying for the Lord to grant her the strength she needs to be able to breathe on her own with 5 broken ribs. They took off her bandages from her arm and pelvic surgeries - arm looks great, but lots of bruises on her stomach ( probably from the seat belt ), and on her right side from the impacts. Still no progress on movement or feeling on right arm but this will be long term issue, not something that will heal like a broken bone.

She also was making secretions, and even coughing some up on her own which is another sign the lungs are working.

Kathy is simply awesome, and working hard to heal. Your prayers are giving her strength, along with the support we need to give her.

Pulse has lowered, and blood pressure has been steady and relatively low which may indicate she can manage the pain.

Some asked about visiting hours - and hopefully she wil leaving Intensive Care Unit in the next couple of days - but you can visit her up to a max of 2 at a time between

5 am - 6 am
10 am - 11 am
1 pm to 1:30
3 pm to 3:30
5 pm to 6 pm
9 pm to 9:30

and I will be in the waiting room for Intensive Care Unit / Operating Room prior to any of these times. If she gets out of I C U there may be more relaxed visiting hours.

I am blessed to have such great friends and family. Thanks for your support.

Michael

Glory to God!

Kathy just left the Intensive Care Unit and moved to a regular hospital room where they expect her to be for the next 1 to 2 weeks. She is getting a well deserved rest after the move. Then it is onto a 2 to 4 week stay at a rehab hospital. She is on solid food, and working hard to keep her breathing full.

Longer term we will need to address the lack of movement / feeling in her right arm.

We are both so thankful for the tremendous support from everyone. We are blessed to have such a great support network, and we really, really need it now. THANKS !

I'll help if still needed for dinner in LJ.  I retired December 1st and have a little time on my hands.  I was sea sick for most of the 60th birthday cruise (patch didn't work for me) I have major motion sickness anyway.  But my best friend Mary was finally able to get on the ship less than an hour before departure, my cousin Pam had a GREAT time and loved meeting all of my classmates on the cruise and my partner Sallye enjoyed it all as well.  But next time let's stay on land!!!!

I was wondering if there is a morning coffee meeting place where retirees go to mingle and gossip in the area that anyone knows about??

Just wanted to stop in and catch up with everyone.  Even though I haven't posted, I am watching and thinking about all of you and the things happening in your lives.  You are in my prayers when needed, and sometimes when not!  The Auto Show that had been discussed to fund a scholarship in memory of my son Andrew has been scheduled.  It will be held on Saturday, March 12th at Allen Samuels Dodge in Katy, Texas.  The entry fee is $25 and we are hoping to raise enough money to give scholarships to several students to attend San Jacinto Junior College's Chrysler Automotive Program.  This is a link to the flier for the car show, please feel to print it and post it wherever you see fit.

 beastsandblades.com/Car%20Show-3.pdf

Feel free to use the link as necessary.  Anyone interested in entering the show needs to send an email to bdenton@asag.net and put "CAR SHOW" in the subject line.

Thanks to everyone, and hope to see you soon!

Mary

Saturday Night Live in the Rehab .... Kathy continues her long road to recovery. She has some feelings developing in her right arm, but along with it comes a lot more pain. The doc said this is "good" pain if there is such a thing. Thanks for all of your support and prayers - we need them ! Her wound opening from her pelvic pins still has a vaccum pump on to dry it out - this limits her activities....
