I still think voting is better than not voting, even if you don't like the choices or don't like everything about a choice. I believe everyone has to follow their conscience and vote for the candidate that they believe will be best for the future they desire for their kids and grandkids -- as long as we keep social security strong as we all have some self-interest in that at this point! It does not appear either presidential candidate is threatening massive changes in social security.
However, as a former Exporter who lives in the Washington DC area I have two comments to share:
1. Always remember that the President is the executive, but Congress makes the laws. Send the best people you can as representatives and senators. If the gridlock in Washington ever changes these are the folk who will make changes. They need to be honest, they need lots of common sense, and they need to have shown that they work for your, not for some lobbyist.
2. Everyone is stirred up and impatient with all the problems we see, and no one pays much attention to good things that happen. This makes many people think rapid or complete change is part of the answer to the problems. That could be, but often rapid change only makes things worse, as long term decisions are poor and long term results are not always good for the American people. Seems like we might be in that loop right now. So maybe people who work in small incremental steps would be better at resolving some of our problems. I do not say that to support any candidate but because of unrelated personal experience. My husband raced the lemans style motorcycle circuit when we were young and I was pit crew. In the years when he tried to fix and upgrade every system on the bikes none of them ran well and he had lousy seasons. In the years when he concentrated on fixing one or two systems, he won and had the trophies and titles to prove it. This may seem like a ridiculous comparison to voiting and current politics, but the lesson learned, to move slower with consideration while making changes, has worked well in many aspects of our personal and professional lives - works in politics, too.
So go vote your conscience and may the best vision of America triumph even if not all of us agree that it is the best. That is what democracy is about and thank God Almighty that we live in a democracy!
