Joe Ballard

Once upon a time in the old west, there was a town where two merchants each had mercantile shops across the street from each other. One would have a sale on an item, and the other would then have a better sale on the same item. Many times the town people would see the two vehemently arguing in the middle of the street. This went on for years. Then one of them died, and the other soon closed down shop and left the area. When the property sold the new owners found a tunnel from one shop that went under the street to the basement of the other shop. There they found pictures and such that led them to realize the two shop owners were brothers and they would move merchandise from one store to the other.

Thus Pepsi vs Coke, Bud vs Miller and.....Republican vs Democrat

MIKE, YOU ARE DEAD SPOT ON. AND RON PAUL WASN'T THE FLAKE BUT UNFORTUNATELY A LOT OF HIS FOLLOWERS WERE. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN SOME OF THE DISPLAYS HIS FOLLOWERS PUT ON IN AUSTIN.

REAGAN, WHEN ASKED WHY HE LEFT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY SAID" I DIDN'T LEAVE THEM, THEY LEFT ME." HE'S PROBABLY ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE NOW SINCE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS LEFT HIM, ALSO.

GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT'S IN STORE FOR US NOW.

Happy upcoming Mother's Day to all you lovely BHS ladies - where would we dads be without you!

4 months to go until the big "R".

Kathy Harkreader (Jones)

Stan, thanks for the reality check--the "r" being in only 4 months! I have to get back to business. :)

JOY!! :) So glad you are back and that you recovered your purse! About your hard body...I have never been accused of having that! I can't go back to my childhood and mop floors...so it is probably not going to happen here. About the best I can do is walk.

Janice, I told you in a private email about talking to Debbye West Haynes. For any who didn't know her, she was part of our class and is the shortest one in the pic that Janice posted. I doubt that Debbye will post anything, so I will tell a few things about her. She grew up on 5th street, next door to Dr. Caldwell's family (Sim and Sally) and spent a lot of time at her other home at Quintana. Her husband of many years, Carl, passed away 4 years ago during Hurricane Rita. His funeral was the day before she had to evacuate so a lot of people weren't even aware of his death. She has one daughter, Terri, who graduated from A&M in only 3 years. Terri recently built a new home in North Texas, but right now is living in China w/ her husband who is working there and their 2 children. Terri is also a very gifted artist. If Debbye posts all of this, pretend that you haven't already read it. :)

I have never heard back from Cheryl. :( Where did John S go?

Kitty, I had to smile about your use of the word "bummer"...I still use it, too. :) The latest thing I am "bummed" out about is that I can't watch Joel Osteen tonight.... bummer...

Janice, your posts about the details of the steam table lunches (all the colors) reminded me of something about your family--I loved your sister Nita's bedroom! I remember it being done in lavender (don't tell me that is wrong). She only let me see it *once*...the trade-off was that I had to listen to her play her band instrument. :) She was pretty nice for a big sister. The real sweetheart in your family (besides you) was Jackie.

I better get walking...only 4 months....

Kathy-
Four months is not nearly long engough for me to walk to do any good-I should have started a year ago! Oh, well,
I am what I am. Michael Poehl sent out a neat email that
pointed out that even the rich and famous get old and fat!

05/05/09 12:31 PM #867

Kathy Harkreader (Jones)

Margaret, it is not going to do me any good, either. :) I really just walk for my health. I just got back. The bad thing about my walks--at the beginning, I look at my cell phone to check the time. 2 minutes later, I cannot remember what time it said and I have to get it out of my pocket and look again! Sometimes, I have to do this 3 times before I can remember the time! SCARY!!!

Margaret, when you work and take care of your mother-in-law like you did for so many years, there is no time or energy left to walk or exercise! I know that everyone in your life sees you through the eyes of love that you give out to others so freely.

Kathy, I thought I was the only one with the time memory problem....I do the same thing.....I can't remember the time 2 minutes after I look and have to look again....and so on...and so on.....and so on.

speaking of time....I am able to send tings to this website an hour before I write them..........I think I use the Delorean method of communication.

John Adcock

I really send things not tings........it would help if I would proof-read.

Kathy-I keep saying I'm going to start walking, but dang nab it, by the time I get home, I'm so tuckered out that HL's lucky if I even get supper cooked. Fortunately, he doesn't require a 4 course hoop-de-do. It would be really easy just to sit on the couch and take a nap like he does!
Thank yu for the kind words, Kathy- you of all people understand the requirements for caring for someone who can't take care of themself. The same kind words you sent to me could also be sent right back to you.

05/05/09 01:02 PM #872

Kathy Harkreader (Jones)

John, thank you SO much for saying that you do the same thing w/ regards to the clock. I feel better now. :)

I also am able to send things at a different time. :) BTW, I am always editing my messages...if you later realize you misspelled something, you can just hit edit and correct it. Someone said on here earlier that they couldn't get rid of edit and delete on their messages...I am thankful to have that option and I use both frequently. :) I have already edited this message. :)

But Margaret, I have not worked outside the home at the same time. There's a difference. And even at that, I couldn't have done it w/out Jim's never-ending help.

Margaret Dubois (Ammons)

Johnnie-
I thought "tings" was something new-dumb me! I can't spell or type very well, either. I can't tell you how mamy time I hit the backspace button to correct a mis-
typed word.
Guys-I don't forget anything-BUT-sometimes the hard-drive
in my brain gets full and just has to delete some data.
Well-I guess that's the same thing as forgetting------

John Adcock

There is a quote from the movie "Lone Star" An old Indian man when asked if he remembered the name of someone from many years back said that at his age to remember a new name, he has to forget an old one....... SOUND FAMILIAR........it does to me. I have selective memory. I can remember details from the age of three but can't remember a doctor's appt. scheduled 3 weeks ago without writing it down.

I guess we can talk politics when you want to make a comment on the subject. The truth is, I agree with your remarks as well as those of Mike Strickland (#860), Joe Ballard (#865), John Adcock (#866).
There is not a hill of beans difference between the Democrats and the Republicans, in Washington. Some are pinto beans and some are lima beans but all are beans. They all subscribe to the same short term philosophy of spending tax dollars to stay in office, with no long term concern for the consequences of their spending. All of them count on the general public’s short term memory. Two, four, or six years is as far sighted as any elected person in Washington cares to see. That is the length of election cycles for Washington politicians.
Power and money. The first goal is to get personally re-elected then, secondly, work toward a party majority. The majority party has more power.
Each election there are cries for “Term Limits”. The answer from Washington is that we already have term limits every two, four, and six years. That is sort of true. We can vote for anyone we want. When was the last time that you saw anyone challenge an incumbent?
Unfortunately, both parties have agreed to and have made the rules. The rules are:
1. You must have a lot of money to challenge an incumbent. (Most qualified people don’t)
2. Incumbents are allowed to receive massive amounts of money from lobbyist year round.
3. Incumbents can continue to collect lobbyist money their entire time in office and, upon leaving office, they get to keep it.
4. Incumbents can use their office privileges to send mass mailing newsletters to their constituents at government expense. (When was the last time you got one that came from someone other than during an election year?)
5. Because the political parties are interested in obtaining a majority, Incumbents are supported by a two party system that collects money on a national basis.
6. An incumbent’s job, for which he/she is paid a healthy government salary, is to run for re-election. (A challenger must be independently wealthy in order to take off for a year to run for office).
These rules can only be changed by the incumbent office holders. The odds of that happening are about the same for mankind achieving intergalactic travel within our lifetime. (I’m 58)
No, the system is broken and, unfortunately, there is no way to fix it at the ballot box.
We have a two party system and it is self perpetuating. Outsiders are labeled “crack pots” and “fringe weird-os”.
Do not be despaired. I went to a tea party (with a bunch of other crack pots and fringe weird-os). I saw, and heard, the frustration. I believe that we will soon have a peaceful grass roots revolution that will bring the system to its knees, hopefully before the system brings us to our knees.
On July 4th, you can have a picnic and go fishing or you can attend a tea party near you. Only massive numbers count. We cannot afford to be silent any longer.

Jim you are sooo right in my books I am no longer a dem or a repub.... I am an AMERICAN and will vote issues not someones party line. When I say I wanted Ron Paul as prez, I knew he could not be elected because rhe majority that runs this country, the United Corporation of America brought to you by the lobbyists of America do not rightfully represent us the working class people. Thus TARP... so we may be a 2 party system but the chances of ever seeing a middle class senator or Rep are slim to none in my books and if we get someone in there they become as corrupt as the rest Hello Rome I give up on the speil chek

My question to all reading our blog...Is your job(s) or small business being affected by this recession. We are in the surveying business here in Cleburne. Our work load has been suppressed I would say 35-40% Kathy and Margret and John amen to the memory question...does this mean we are getting old(er)

05/05/09 03:32 PM #879

John Adcock

Help me, please....what 2 parties..........I think it's more like the story of the 2 brothers with stores across the street from each other. That story was SPOT ON describing our political system.

The main problem is that the moment you create a system that pays people to vote (ie welfare and all other handouts that the government takes credit for but are supplied by WORKING TAXPAYERS.) making a large portion of the nation dependent on these handouts. it is that moment that government fails.............gonna' get off my soapbox now.

Right on Right on!! Power to the people as I step down also

05/05/09 03:47 PM #881

Joy Garrett (Chessher)

You are right Dee...we can no longer be silent. It is easy to get comfortable and hope things go away, but they will not! It is people coming out in numbers that will make a difference, and send a message loud and clear to Congress, and our President that we will not tolerate misuse of our tax dollars, and inform them their job is to act on behalf of Americans...not themselves!!!! I have said for years that we would have a great revolution when Americans would stand strong against a self serving government. I am not for either party, and will only vote for incumbents that are doing the job, and voting what is moral, and in the best interest of the American people. We don't want to look back, and one day realize that we wished we had stood strong when we had the chance. Now is the time to speak loud and clear...at a Tea Party on July 4th!!!!
Thank you everyone for your concern...for standing strong! It is time we stand together, and let no one in government or any man take our FREEDOM of our GREAT Nation...THE USA UNDER GOD!!! When we return to GOD, and let HIM LEAD...WE WILL NOT FAIL!!!!!
GOD Bless you all...and thank you GOD for the class of 1969 at BHS!!!!!!!!!

Oh, yeah-the economy is affecting our business. We do
construction testing-soils, concrete, etc. Our business is probably about 40% off. Fortunately, thru normal attrition, we have not had to lay off(except for my part-time help in the office). We just haven't replaced anyone who has left here since before Ike-that's when things started to go downhill.
We lost a big Dow job one month into the project-Dow just plain shut it down. Thank heavens for Port Freeport and Phillips.

We were already in horrible shape before the new administration. I'll make this analogy: people used to give Ron Reagan full credit for the collapse of communism in Russia. The Russian government was already like a drunk walking heel to toe on a tall wall. Reagan came along and bluffed them with the brilliant "star wars" scam, forcing them to spend even more on their military, which pushed them off the wall. Our country is on the same wall. Our government owes more than the annual GDP and it grows every day. The current administration is to our economy what Reagan was to Russia. The last push. But there's a lot of blame to go around.

Where do we sign up for the tea party? "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union" NEED TO HAVE OUR VOICE BACK AND BE HEARD and in GOD WE TRUST is the premise we should stand on....If God be for you who can be against you
