Kathy, as we get older, my sisters and I grow closer. Jackie works in the Pharmacy department (outside the pharmacy itself) at Walmart in LJ now. She is a sweetheart, but what has made the most difference in her life is that a number of years ago she became a Christian and it turned her life around! The change was absolutely amazing. She is the sweetest, most positive person and she is a wonderful encourager, like you! I have been waiting for the opportunity to let you know that I have noticed what an encourager you are. No one posts a message or a problem but that you aren't there with a word of encouragement. That must be a gift from the Lord. How blessed your family is to have you! And how about your sisters?

Susie-
I saw your letter to Gin this morning in the Facts-So, folks- we may soon have a recipe for our wonderful pinto
beans. Maybe we should have some of these beans sometime during the reunion-or are we already full of hot air?

I hate the Burger King commercials with the king with the plastic face. He is the creepiest character I know of, at least since that movie with the doll that came to life and had steel teeth that chomped on his victims.

Since I can't seem to get around to taking care of business, will use the short cut (broadcast) method, Thanks for the birth day wishes in the past couple of days, I definitely need all the good whishes I can get. Many years ago my Dad called to whish me a happy birthday. I replied that I have given up birthdays they only make me feel older.
His comment was "... I like birthdays, I wan't all I can get because the alternative is tough". I now subscribe to his theory.
Thanks to all, steve

I agree, Jim, that Burger King commercial is the creepiest. It's enough to keep me away from Burger King.
I wonder what moron came up with that concept.

The guy is pretty creepy. The thing that keeps me away from Burger King is the burger. For a fast food chain, What-A-Burger is the best and they don't have a clown or a creepy guy, just a good burger. No. 5 (bacon cheese burger) please, and What-A-Size it. . . and a Diet Coke (gotta watch my waist (translation - get it out there where I can see it)).

05/06/09 12:34 PM #897

Margaret Dubois (Ammons)

You're right, Dee. Whataburger ( A Texas tradition) is the best burger, no gimmics, just plain good food and the fries are also good. Yea, I do the Diet Coke thing too. Got to make some attempt at being good.

05/06/09 02:39 PM #898

Jd Barnett:

I think Dee and Margaret are on the right track. There is a little known dietary study (government suppressed, of course) that if you eat something really good and unhealthy, like a big double Whataburger with cheese, and drink a diet Coke or Pepsi with it, that the two cancel out and calorically it is as if you didn't eat anything at all. I'm going to run it past my cardiologist and see if he salutes the concept.

I miss Whataburgers. We have In and Out burgers here in Sunny Central California, though, which are also good. They have the world's simplest menu which consists of fries, drinks, and burgers. There are secret code words (really!) where you can get little extras. "Nature style" gets you no bun and the patty wrapped in lettuce leaves. If you order "animal style" you'll get a mustard cooked patty with grilled onions instead of the usual style burger, so it's kind of fun to try to figure out the secret codes.

I don't know who thought up the plastic Burger King. I think it was someone involved in organized pederasty. I disapprove heartily and join all those who boycott Burger King. Their king is just plain wrong.

LOVE and miss What-a-Burger! We grab 'em every chance we get..fortunately we can be satified with the junior size! Here in So Cal, I like Fat Burger...again I'm satisfied with a Baby Fat. In n' Out is close by, but not my favorite....fortunately!

Kitty-
I don't super-size mine-I waddle enough already! Besides, there would be no room for the fries. I like them even better than Mickey D's.

Stan, thank you for recognizing the mom's for Mother's Day. I think we should nominate you the "count down" person for the big "R"! Anyone second it?

My ex mother-in-law worked in the lunchroom at Clute and she told me she would sugar to the beans. She also shared the roll's recipe with me. Those rolls were awesome. She also told me they would let the beans sit over night in a big pan of water.

Janice, thank you so much for your kind words. If anything good has ever come from my life, I definitely don't get the credit. Actually, everyone on here is super supportive, and that certainly includes you! I've enjoyed reminiscing (spell check, Tony?) about 5th and 6th grades as much as anything. You were a part of most of what I did those years. I liked Sherry and Carolyn, also, but I think they must have stayed inside more than we did. We played outdoors a lot. If we were inside, we were at your house and your mom always made me feel at home. You were better than I was at almost everything but I didn't care. I was just glad to be there. :) I remember going to Sandra Gebert's house for the first time w/ your family...the parents played cards (or something) and I think we played in forts made out of sheets in the living room. Sandra has been in Europe but might be back home now and I hope she will join us on here. Do you remember that Mike Reed used to twist our names around to make us mad? He and I got into a little tiff over it, in front of Danny Penvose's house. Mike, if you're reading this, I'm not still mad. :) Anyway, those were wonderful, carefree days and you were a big part of them.

Marian, over the weekend I saw my brother and told him about the hoopla about the Beutel Beans. He said to forget the beans, he wanted the roll recipe. I would love to share that with him if you can still locate it.

Joe: My mom worked in the BHS cafeteria after my dad passed away in '92. The Brazosport School Food Service Association published a cookbook of recipes submitted by the cafeteria workers. Here’s a Peanut Butter Cookie recipe submitted by Nola Johnson, S.F. Austin 1/4 c. soft shortening 1 egg 1/4 c. butter 1 1/2 c. flour 1/2 c. peanut butter 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 c. granulated sugar 3/4 tsp. baking soda 1/2 c. brown sugar (packed) 1/4 tsp. salt Cream shortening, butter and peanut butter; add sugars and egg and beat until smooth. Combine dry ingredients and stir into creamed mixture. Chill dough. Roll the chilled dough into balls the size of a large walnut. Place dough balls 3" apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Flatten with fork dipped in flour (crisscross). Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Yields about 3 dozen cookies. My mom submitted recipes for Baked Fish in Tomato Sauce (Cajuns call it "Coubion") and also a Shrimp and Spaghetti recipe....UMMMMMMMMM GOOD!

Winona...thank you for the peanut butter cookie recipe...yummy...I do remember those cookies, and peanut butter is still my favorite!!! I want some tonight!!! I ate some lettuce and pickles instead!
Joe..how sweet to wish all the Mom's Happy Mother's Day! This was the greatest part of my whole life being a Mom...I think I had more fun than our boys...relived my childhood for sure...still reliving it!!! LOL!!! Today we dressed up as Fancy Nancys' with high heels and had a tea party!!! Of course my granddaughter, Jolie attended!

Now people....the best burger in Texas is the Zula burger made by Zula herself at Garrett's Pharmacy..people drove from other counties to eat that burger. Hey wouldn't that make a great burger restaurant named Zula Burgers?!!! She made them on the grill...I bet they were 1,200 calories!!! Who cared! My waist cared!!!! Who remembers Zula Burgers? Who remembers Mrs. Branson's homeade pies at Garrett's Pharmacies?!!! Wow, that woman could sure make a pie!

Ok...did ya'll hear there will be no National Prayer Day at the White House. First time in 9 years! I am not at all surprised, but would be surprised if they did!!! Joe...Austin may have the 4th of July Tea Party at the Capitol...I hear Govenor Perry is not to happy these days!!

Going to the ranch to check on my pets...Barneo and his buddies!
Have a Great Mother's Day...Moms!!!
GOD Bless,
JOY!!!!!
Joe...Try the City Hall..that is where the Tea Parties are meeting July 4th!!!

I found this recipe for pinto beans that includes sugar...maybe it's like the ones we remember. Texas-Style Beans Cook Time: 5 hours Ingredients: 2 cups pinto beans, dry 1/4 pound salt pork, diced 1 cup chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced 2 teaspoons salt dash pepper 3/4 cup diced green pepper 1 tablespoon sugar 6 drops bottled hot pepper sauce As suggested by Cyndie Crystal Williams and Margaret DuBois Ammons, "add 1 full stick of butter or margarine" Preparation: In 2-quart bean pot or casserole, cover beans with water; soak overnight. Drain. Cover with fresh water; add salt pork, onion, and garlic to the beans. Simmer, covered, for 2 hours. Add salt, pepper, green pepper, sugar, and hot pepper sauce. Cover and simmer 3 hours more. Serve beans with cornbread squares or hot cooked rice. Makes 8 to 10 servings.
