JD...love your pictures. My fifth grade teacher was Mrs. Risher..Mrs Davis 6th grade! I know all my teachers...memory coming back!!!!

Glenn Mallory....hey we may be kissing cousins!!! LOL I think Thomas Mckissick Garrett was my great, great, great grandfather..maybe more greats. There is a Garrett cemetery in Stranger Texas near Marlin. "Big" Aunt Joy did our genealogy, and has us related to royalty...King Henry of Saxony Germany...spelled Garat. I don't know if I believe that, and also she loved John Wayne...real name Mariam, and we are supposed to be related to him also...I have to say my Dad Tom Garrett looked like him sitting on a horse, and so did his Dad...Papa Sanford Quay Garrett! Who knows?!!! I would be interested...we might be related...

Okay...now the other arm hurts Kathy need sympathy!!! I fell not at the mountain, but at Bull Creek in Austin fishing for minnows and tad poles with Jolie. Crash...boom...ouch!!!!! I slipped on slimy rocks. Wow is that a beautiful place...and with a waterfalls! Well...I didn't break any bones!!!!

Marian...hi...yes I just love Brian...great man!!!

Dee Allen...I will email you about door prizes!!! Oh...I have a friends son that I let bow hunt at the ranch. He is really good at it...where does your son live? The ranch is about 1 1/2 hours from Fort Worth...Weatherford area..7 miles from Cross Plains!

Okay...now I am going to soak my arm...whole body in some Epsom salt! Did you know that Epsom salt will detox the body, and really cleanse the skin?!!!!

Hey everybody. I just found the msg forum last nite and spent hrs reading and catching up. Thanks to the welcomes from those of you who wrote on my profile or answered a personal msg. I cannot believe that the guys who used to seem mostly interested in trying to get away with as much as possible are now so entertaining, politically aware & active, and actually sound intelligent. I'm not at all surprised that the gals turned out so great. Guess growing up in Brazosport showed all of us the right way to live and raise families. If only all Americans could have been so lucky maybe our problems would be as small as the mosquitoes that we had to keep swatting. I hope everyone keeps messaging because it kept me entertained and laughing for hrs. And the memories that keep coming back...amazing. Before I discovered the forum, I posted a msg on my profile about my memory of Carla's destruction in Freeport. But there are so many great things to remember as well. Thanks to God, the good always seems to outweigh the bad. And '69 Exporters will always rule!!

I can still smell it... Very gross odor!!! Well we lived tgrough it!!! That is when daddy built the shopping center where i worked until 23... Off and on!! That is where i drove Daddy's new El Camino into the wall!!! Good thing Daddy had such a freat sense if humor!!! He was so happy when I married Randy!!! Me too!!!!!! lol!!!!

Dee, Joy, I'm feeling better...I called the Pakistani hotline.

Joy, Pat...Carla hit right after we moved here. My dad kept telling my mother that it was just a little wind and rain...no need to leave. Meanwhile, ALL our neighbors were evacuating. I skated w/ Carolyn Croy while the weather grew worse...she could skate backwards and in a figure 8 and I couldn't. Janice and Sherry Whittle probably joined us. FINALLY, after the entire neighborhood was deserted, we left but had to drive all the way to Fredricksburg before we could find a room! Our house had 18" of water in it, w/ many of our things still in boxes on the floor. We lost just about everything we had. After that, when there was any mention of a storm, my dad had his bags packed first.

Joy, I use arnica cream for light injuries and sometimes take the homeopathic pills. Health food stores have some cream that does not have any bad ingredients. Please be careful.

Glad to see my comments on Carla elicted some memories, even if not so great ones. But to have survived something like that and still come back strong just proves the strength of our parents and communities. And it is great that after all these yrs, even the people who weren't necessarily that close to you back then share your memories, values, and friendships now. It has been great hearing from several of you. Thanks, Dee, for even remembering that I used to live in Mexia. That says something for not having lost too many of those memory brain cells. Mike, I remember thinking that Mr. Boyer was probably a fantastic teacher for the really "brainiacs" who could understand and keep up with him. But for me, most of it just blew way over my head. I was so grateful to just get thru his class!

LOL that Pakistan hotline is a life saver...well not really life savers are they??!!! Glad you feel better Kathy...I hope you get your t-bird. A couple of years ago I bought this 1940 Hot Rod...bright yellow! One of my friends was driving it, and some crazy lid in the road popped up and pulled out the oil pan etc! I fixed it and sold it because #3 son is in ministry and needed money!!! It was fun..I always wanted to be a race car driver!!! LOL Kathy...I am using that arnica, and BC powder...not tasty, but takes out the soreness!! Please GOD send me an angel to catch me when I slip!!!!

Going to Sea World Thursday...yipppppppeeeeee
Love to all,
JOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mary Jane, did your house sustain any damage during Hurricane Carla? Do you remember how Velasco Blvd. kinda slopes down between 8th and 9th right at the alley? I heard that there were houses in Freeport that weren't damaged by Carla because they were up on blocks and the rising water didn't affect them. And it seems, I remember, that the City of Freeport or whoever operated the locks that controlled flooding in Freeport didn't respond quickly enough, and the water was locked in instead of out. So there was a lot of standing water that didn't have to be there. Kathy, we also had 18" of water in our house on 9th Street. We lived for months with the water marks on the doors and walked on cement floors. My Mom had never prepared for a hurricane and was putting things away anticipating high winds, not rising water. She put a lot of pictures and books between mattresses and we lost a lot of them. We also had wood floors that buckled. Our t.v. was saved because it sat squarely on top of a buckle. Also, no one had flood insurance back then, only wind, and we had some foundation damage. We are in the process of getting that same house ready to sell, and Bill David and his crew just this last January had that damage repaired!

Does anyone remember that very large dent in Mr. Boyer's filing cabinet made by him hitting it with his fist when you asked a question? Terrifying! "If you don't understand it now you never will!" I can still clearly hear his words and he was right. I still don't understand it and I probably never will. I also remember that the eraser in his left hand moved almost as fast as the chalk in his right hand!

Kathy Harkreader Jones you have an amazing memory!
And just to fill in some blanks the dog was a dachsund named Schubert.
The lake cabin still exists although it needs some attention.
I think Gary Griffin and Kevin Kemp also went to our church and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Sorry! Margaret Willis was Presbyterian if I'm not mistaken.
I pulled muscles in my right leg doing the splits for a photograph. They made me stay that way for about five minutes while the photographer played with his camera. Ouch!!!!! My leg turned the color of a banana the next day. I remember being told to walk it off. Right!!!!! I don't remember who the 3rd person was.
I tore holes in the knees of most of those wool slacks.
My Mom and Dad were and are very sweet. Thank you!
Now Kathy, I think I'm glad you weren't around to remember and remind me of all my escapades in college! :) Ha! Ha!
As Joy says, "Yipppppeeeeeeeee!"

Once again. Thank you Carrol and all who help! This site is great fun and I'm looking forward to the reunion!

Hurricane Carla memories--thankfully, we were one of the fortunate families. We lived catty-corner from the Catholic Church (1102 W 6th--Robyn Burnett's family lived across the street at the time and later bought this house when we moved to 1750 W 7th). Our house was the corner lot and up on a little rise. The water only "sloshed" into our house when the boats went down the street to the flooded end of town. My Aunt Gennie & Uncle Cyril lived near Janice and their house had LOTS of water damage. I still have a small china cabinet that was rescued from the rubish piles--one of these days I'm going to refinish it.

I doubt any of us will forget Carla, the hurricane,..we lost everything and never did move back in our house.. Who remembers our little school desks at Jane Long with the books, got water-soaked and swelled so much they were stuck in the desks..don't know how long we went w/o books...my brother and i must have had ten shoe boxes of baseball cards, .on the floor of our closet..then we had shoeboxes of cardboard blocks..I agree with Joe B. good to hear from so many classmates..must have been the same your that Mr. Stircklan was my LL baseball coach, too

Wake up people...I am ready to talk!!! Always ready to talk!!! I woke up at 3:00 AM!!!

Well, we finally made it to Sea World yesterday!!! It was so much fun! Jolie and I were laying down on the wall feeding and petting the dolphins!!! They kept jumping up and smiling at us!!! I think it was those fishes that Jolie fed them!!! I asked her "what did you like best about SEA WORLD"...she said, "Feeding the dolphins Nanny!" She of course had to have a Dolphin shirt, purse, and Shamu's bottle top head to drink!" Spoil her... of course.... that is what we are supposed to do!!!!

Yippppppppppeeeeee guess what? My sister-in-law, Paula Tate Garrett is coming to the reunion!!!!!! Yea Paula!!! She is a great Grammie, and her granddaughters adore her!!! We are having all girl grandbabies in the Garrett and Chessher families...!!!!! We are taking over the market in PINK!!!!

Well, this has been a painful week...literally...slipped down twice...once at the ranch...then at the creek on slimey rock, and then Jolie stepped on my toe, and it broke off right in the middle of Sea World ...dropped a can of beans on it a while back!!! OMG...I sound like a Klutz...never seen how this word is spelled..oh well you get the picture OUCHIE!!!!! My daughter in law Katy was cracking jokes...so I was screaming laughing to keep from crying......!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh...Jolie is so sweet..."sorry Nanny for stepping on your toe...you can use my soft blankey Nanny!" She melts my heart!!!! Okay...I am over my pity party now!!! I am not a klutz...things just happen to me!!! Walking like a stiff mummy...maybe I will get one of those walking sticks...anybody tries to knock me down or step on my toe..... I will hit them with my stick!!!
Have a great day and great Memorial weekend!!! #3 son is coming home!!!!! YIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
GOD Bless you all...and protect you.
JOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :0)
