Garner State Park, wow, we had some good times there. Early on my family got caught in one of the floods and barely made it out. then after high school a bunch of us went and had a blast.. Carrol who else was there? I can remember some Mike, Linda Broome, Belinda, ????. We climbed Baldly, swung from the rope into the river, floated, shot the shoot under the wash out bridge, danced, drank (of course I didn't, I was just there like Dee) and had a really good time. I remember someone gettng arrested for stealing a goat but can't remember if they were with us (David David comes to mind??)

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!! This has been a good day. I was able to bring my mom home from The Plantation (she was having rehab) and she is doing great. The contractor has also FINISHED my house. All this has been going on for over a month. We repainted the outside, inside, new tile and carpet and marble countertops. I feel like I'm in a new house. I hope not one of you will ever have to experience water damage. Vicky, I will miss not seeing you at The Plantation. I need to slow down and take a nice long trip!!!! Karen, thanks for going by and visiting with my mom. I hope you all have a bless evening.

Garner State Park - oh, my goodness. I remember Ranch Style beans out of the can. That guy that was a year younger than us, Sheep?. . . McClendon? seems like he got arrested. Doug Billie, Billingsley, Patty Kopycinski, names are just floating to the top - don't know if they actually are part of a Garner memory or not. I had forgotten about that forced march up Baldy thinking surely I was going to die - did we lose a bet?
I remember going to Garner with the Skaggs and Stephanie Pennington and going to the dances every night. What was the name of THE GARNER DANCE? The Garner slide? There was one but I can't remember what it was called or how it was done. I remember as a kid going to Garner with my family & Tana Shreves' family. Her little sister came down with the mumps IN OUR TENT. Not one of us ever got them. Maybe Mike did . . . wouldn't swear to that. I know Tana & I didn't.

Anybody remember that B.J. Thomas did this song..
Dave said it was very popular when he was in High School. Check out this website:
http://home.earthlink.net/~misscarol/GarnerStatePark.htm

----------------------------
Garner State Park lyrics

Artist: B.j. Thomas

In the western part of Texas
90 miles from of San Antone
There's a place I go each summer
When I get the urge to roam

I stand out on the highway
If I couldn't catch a ride I'd walk
To Garner State Park
Let's go to Garner State Park
Come on along to Garner State Park

Where the prettiest girls in Texas
And from everywhere
Parade their city slicking clothes
And bought some boots and western wear
We swam all through the day
And that's when it gets dark
At Garner State Park
Let's go to Garner State Park
We gotta go to Garner State Park

At the dance I met a girl
She was from old Houston town
She was the queen of the park
She was the prettiest girl around
We walked down to the water
We found a big rock, began to talk
At Garner State Park
Come on and go to Garner State Park

Pretty Cloud to Houston town
San Antone and everywhere around

Next thing I knew it was 4 am
She said my Mother's surely worried
About where I am
And with the Texas sky above
We couldn't help that we had fallen in love
At Garner State Park

Everything's great after dark
When you're at Garner State Park

But the summer was soon over
And we had to say goodbye
I said we'll see each other next year
As a tear fell from her eye
When I came I knew no sorrow
Now I'm leaving with a broken heart
From Garner State Park

Everything's great after dark
When you're at Garner State Park

Oh, but I'll be back again next year
I'll be back again next year
Yeah
I'll be back again next year
I'll be back again next year
Yeah
I'll be back again next year
I'll be back again next year
Yeah
I'll be back again next year
I'll be back again next year
Yeah
I'll be back again next year

We had an Austin area " Practice " Reunion at our house on Friday night. Some pics of those attending are posted under my profile. Nell Teas has a great group photo of us under her profile. It was great fun getting to visit with all of these OLD Exporters, and a few from my wife's class at San Antonio MacArthur. The first person to indentify 100 % of the people in the group photo gets a prize much better than any of Dee's doorprizes.

Yes the dance was the WHIP. One of my memories is with Claudette Copin's family.. We spent 10 days there. I remember her Dad would cook breakfast for all of us. I loved all of it, the dances, swimming. I had forgotten about hiking up Baldee. Another memory was with our family and my cousin's family, Deborah Rosenkranz. I can remember having my hair in rollers, getting ready for the dance.

I know our prayers are with David Lydic and his family as his father died Thursday, June 11. Thank you Marvin and Collene for bringing this to my attention.

David Earl Lydic was born April 19, 1930, in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of James B. and Olive Gilmore Lydic. He grew up and attended schools in Nederland, then he moved to Lake Jackson, where he reared his family with love and devotion. He later moved to Beaumont and finally to Bellville. David served his country in the United States Navy from 1947-1950 and was honorably discharged from the reserve in 1954.

A Methodist by faith, he was united in marriage to Lanora Morton Dees on May 22, 1991, in Beaumont, Texas, where they created another welcoming home that nurtured their adult children and loved and enjoyed their grandchildren. He edited the Texas Dow Employees’ Credit Union newsletter and served on their board. He was a member of the Bellville Masonic Lodge, American Legion of Bellville, Austin County Historical Society, City of Bellville Library Board and the Austin County Jail Museum, where as docent he loved showing vistitors and school children its historic building. David liked being active and engaged in his community wherever he lived.

David enjoyed target shooting, wood carving, cartooning and drawing. He was a member of the Bellville United Methodist Church and loved spending time with his family and friends.

David passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the age of 79, in Bellville.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lanora Lydic, of Bellville; sons, David L. Lydic and his wife, Susan, of Austin and Robert Paul Lydic and his wife, Edna, of Lake Jackson; daughter, Carol Lydic Gay of Austin. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Stephen and Joel Lydic, Leslie and Eric Gay and Christopher, Theresa and Sarah Lydic; and stepgrandson, Frank Weissmann. He also is survived by his brother-in-law, Carl Bledsoe; and by great-grandchildren, Erika and Elizabeth Lydic, Zayne Lydic and Sienna Rose Gay.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Carlita Lydic; brother, Ralph Lydic; and stepchildren, Carey Dees and Denise Weissmann. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2009, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at the Bellville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Amy Haralson officiating. Interment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Restwood Memorial Park in Lake Jackson.

I borrowed this from the c/o 1968 website via Judy Pinkard 'cause it is a sound philosophy for the good life: ;>)
Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.
It is the most-requested column I've ever written."My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God
Never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ''In five years, will this matter?".
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

THANK YOU Carol for sharing that. When we don't forgive ourselves for things that we need to, that is when we need to be reminded that God loves us unconditionally. The video is awesome. My little mind can not comprehend such a perfect love. Please give me the link to send it to others.

Kathy, Claudette, Joe - I posted a few more pictures of Keith's family under my name. I can't find one of him with Mary. I'm trying to get my daughter to come up with one.

Claudette Coppin (Fleming)

Judy, I do like your prose and the posting of thoughts, too, for all; Judy lives in the town where my parents were born and raised, lots of Fleming's in that area.
Garner State Park, many, many memories. And yes, the big dance step is the WHIP...learned the Texas two step and waltz there too... lots of river time...spent 3 weeks there once and washed our clothes in the river by wearng a set.. changing and washing another..took several changes to get them all..Claudette is there now with Tyra, Todd, spouses and grandkids...the Coppin family started going in 1962 and Claudette only missed one summer (1980) since then..
Nancy C.; that was Sue Auld from Leakey who was our friend that worked in the cafe at Garner...she still lives in Leakey, we have stayed there a few times over the past ten years...the Frio is still cold when it is running..a lot has changed, new entrance and headquarters, more campgrounds, but just as fun and the dances every night...It is so much fun to see the "young folks" dance the night away, but we still know how to show them how to really dance; they don't keep time to the music. I drove Sherry Cade and Joey Swansey to Mexico so they could get married.. Ol' Doc Cade was really pissed about that! Too many friends from the Frio Canyon area to mention, but a lot are in the area still.. our classmate Tommy Smith lives outside the Garner entrance, up on the hill above the park.. it was one great place to go and meet people from all over our great state.

Judy Burkes McGough (Pinkard)

Kathy, I wish I had more to share, I'm still looking. Thanks for the comment. I wish I could come to the reunion to see so many of you. I loved your class as much as my own. I know you will all have so much fun. You have a head start with this wonderful website.

Joe, I have found that the only one that never lets me down is my Jesus, sometimes..I struggle, and I have to totally rely on my faith, but I know He understands and that He is working on me in SOME area when those times come. The hardest thing in life is realizing no matter how much you want to stop people you love from destruction, you can't change them, but God can. Also, to recognize that what I think would be God's plan for them may not be at all. He may have a different path for them to take. It is hard to let go. Like the song "The Dance" I would go through all the pain to have enjoyed the good times or to have had them woven in the tapestry of my life. Wow! Didn't mean to get so deep.

Also, sounds like I missed out on so much...I never got to go to Garner State Park.

Yes-when things get really rough, the only help is Jesus
Christ. There have been times when all I could do was put my head on my desk and give it over to Him because I was helpless. We've all had our dark times and most of us have come through them with His help.
