We used to think our Mothers were too strict regarding our hemlines and now our kids are shocked...How funny. However, the rule in our house was no more than 2" above the knee and Mother made a lot of my dresses so I was at her mercy.

Writing from Philadelphia. I can look out my window to see the Phillies stadium. They are playing a game tonight.

Winona,
You are right about the hemline. My mother made my dresses too. And she would put her two fingers at my knee and measure to make sure the hem met her approval of 2". I don't know about the rest of you, but we need to get back to those kinds of standards!!!! God help us.

Went to Garner State EVERY year of my school days starting when I was in first grade and my last trip was with my family as a senior. Aaaaawwww, such fun memories.

Since everything is so quiet here, I am going to say one other thing I have been meaning to say--that is about another classmate that I liked very, very much growing up. That was Nancy Bryan. She was one of the very sweetest people I ever knew. That girl didn't have a malicious bone in her body.

. . . and she still doesn't.

Kathy-My mom made all of my clothes, also. I got away with pretty short dresses because I was so short-like Alice-Mrs. Crawford coulnd't see down that far. I did not wear my dresses that short in high school, but that changed a lot when I went off to college. My sister Annette and I swapped off clothes a lot. What I wouldn't give to have Mom back here making my clothes-she really spoiled me. I miss her so much-there's just no one like your mother.

My mother made my clothes and it was great to be able to go pick a pattern and then go pick out material. My granddaughter is always wanting me to make her a dress but now the patterns - if you cannot catch them on sale -are way over priced and the good material is very expensive; so most the time it is cheaper to catch something on sale. She is going for intermediate sewing classes this year and she will be making a skirt - so we will probably be doing a few skirts before school starts in September.

I loved mom sewing for me-I had a new dress every week. We would go to Crawfords, Browns, Penneys or where ever to buy material and pattern. I had some dresses that only cost $1.00 to make. Wish those days were back!

I think the thing I liked most about mother making my clothes was that the scraps of material would go into a quilt. Then it was always such a great game to find all of the blocks that had your material in it. This is where I fell in love with quilting. Mother always liked to do fan quilts or 9-square quilts so there was lots of different colors that she could use. There was also 4 of us girls so there was always lots of dress scraps.

Janice Mangum (Colwell)

Back to moms making clothes... My mama made my dresses as well, and then she taught me to sew. My graduation gift was a sewing machine and I still have it. It was a Singer Fashion Mate. I made a lot of my own clothes in high school, and I related a story to Claudette Coppin Fleming on her profile concerning a dress she wore to school. I loved it so much that I made one just like it. I will post a picture of it on my profile.

I want to say Thank You to the committee for allowing vistors on the site. I have enjoyed catching up with old friends from your class. It has really been a blessing.

Judy, you've been a blessing, yourself.

Margaret, a $1.00 dress! Wow! That was only possible b/c you were so short. :)

Janice, that was a darling dress you made! Such a cute picture!

Delores, I wish you would post some pictures of your quilts.

Janice, speaking of copying someone else's clothes--Mary Jane Pratt and I wore matching outfits the first day of 7th grade. :) Black skirts w/ sewn down box pleats and red and white pin striped oxford cloth shirts--long sleeved w/ big red patches on the elbows. It was way too hot to wear long sleeves but we didn't care. :)

Tune in tonight and tomorrow night to Justin.tv - CW Colt Key West Music to see a live webcast of Lynn Langham and her partner Doug Gill performing at the MIckey Newbury Gathering. You can read more about the gathering on Lynn's myspace. It's been going on for nine years now with various songwriters and performers. Lynn and Doug have been performing there each summer for 2 or 3 years now. Carrol do you remember listening to Newbury music at your house with Mike, Larry, me, you and who knows who else? Well, Larry has followed his music now for almost 40 years and is at the Gathering now. We've been to the last seven of the gatherings that have been held in Texas. I'm not actually there now. I stayed home to care for our elderly dog and help out with grand daughter while her mom finishes her thesis this summer. Last summer I didn't get to go either, because my mom had just been put in hospice care. She passed in October. I'm thinking stronger about coming in September. I've been looking in at the message board and reading profiles. I usually don't participate in online stuff, but I thought some of you BHSers might be interested in seeing Lynn.

Oh, thanks, Suzette. I don't think I get that channel but I will look around. You know, for a couple of months I posted a youtube video of Lynn and Don performing at the Monterrey festival. Yes, OF COURSE, I remember Mickey Newberry - 'His Eye is On the Sparrow'. Great songwriter. I am not a bit surprised that you & Larry are still following him. Shippers, Larry Moore was such a fan that decades ago he hunted up Mickey's parents in Houston. Where is the festival held?

I am so glad you are participating. Suzette, I was one of those people that Tommy Palmer stalked to come to a reunion committee meeting. I had only been to one reunion - the one at Stahlman park - and I had so much fun AND WAS SO SURPRISED THAT I DID! I hope you and Larry will come. Mike wouldn't miss it for the world.

I'm so sorry that you lost your Mother. That is a hard thing no matter how old we are or they are. Nobody takes Mother's place.

Ooooops! Did I forget to say it's a webcast on the internet. They're actually performing right now, so I'm going to get back to it.

Suzette or anyone,
Help!! I've gone to the justin.tv site and I wasn't able to find any video of Lynn performing last night. Can you send me the link? I'd really like to watch it. Thank you.

All I know is that I have it saved to favorites as justin.tv - cw colt key west music. I hope that helps the live feed from Gainesville is on right now with "Sam Anderson and Rusty Buddy" (don't know them) Lynn and Doug were up last night around this time. I don't know how to find previously broadcast performances. Sorry. I hope ya'll find it and can see her. She is very mellow, folksy-bluesy and still looks exactly like she looked in high school.
The gathering is smaller this year, probably because of the economy or because of the death of the original organizer (but his sister took it over). Several people from Nashville and some from Florida. Also Waylon Payne performed last night (he is the son of country singer Sammie Smith ('70s era); she has also been there before she died a few years back. Waylon played in Walk the Line about Johnny Cash. (I think Waylon was Jerry Lee Lewis.) Newbury's kids perform too. They're grown and try to carry own keeping his legacy alive.

I copied and pasted justin.tv - cw colt key west music
When you get to that website, click on 'Clips' and scroll all the way down to 'Welcome to the Show ! Help support live music by sending a tip...' There's about 8 minutes of Lynn and Doug performing.

I just caught up on the forum...speaking of sewing the homemaking teachers gave up on me when I sewed the zipper to the front of the dress!!! They loved my grandmother, Mammy and let she and Mrs Ghram and sew my jacket!!!! Oh well, I can cook! They did teach me how...but would think I lost my mind since I don't measure anything!!! My Mother really did try to sew for Janie and me...made the same dress in different colors..all stripes! Daddy paid Janie and I to work at the drugstore, and I bought my own clothes for high school! If you remember...I loved clothes, and still do!!! I think I wore a dress everyday to high school! I sure wish I had some of my clothes now...they have come back into style!!!

Well, I am back from my first vacation, and will leave for LA on Friday! I am going to this program called GOD chicks!!! It is my first time, but I hear it is amazing!!!

I am hoping to be so skinny I will have to jump around in the shower to get wet!!! I am running into the walls now...in the shower. Ha ha!!!! LOL!!! I will keep you posted!!!! I wonder if my skin will turn yellow from all of the eggs? You think I am kidding...my sister ate so many carrots she turned orange!!! She did look like a real Longhorn!!! LOL...hope you are reading this Janie!!! My sister is my best friend!!!!!
I did see some amazing things, and I was not scared as i rode on this flying box over this huge gorge!!! Amazing! Now I want to go back and go white water rafting!!! Hey maybe we can plan a trip for those that are interested!!! It is so exciting!!!

FROM STEVEN PACKARD. He posted it on his profile but I'm moving here so it will be more 'public'. Thanks for playing along, Steve. Sorry you won't make it to the reunion.

3 things I would save in a fire: Wife; Family Pictures; maybe: Mother’s jewelry, Grandmother’s Irish china she collected, Grandfather’s 45 he carried in the trenches in WWI; Everything else are just material possessions. If you are wondering about pets – Sherre would take care of that.
3 toppings on a pizza: Double Pep, Beef, Onions & Banana Peppers

3 things I can't live without: Food, Love of Family, Friends
3 words I would say before I die: I love you.

3 best friends: Sherre, Steven Jr. & Clay Claiborne (you are always in my thoughts)
3 dream vacations: Fly fishing for Bone Fish in Belize, Playing the great golf courses in Scotland & Ireland, Learning to cook in Italy

3 favorite words: Star Spangled Banner, Aggie War Hymen, and one would have to be a cuss word.

3 favorite movies: Airplane, Young Frankenstein, Mrs. Doubtfire (the underlying story was heartwarming & hit too close to home)

3 things to do before you die: Fall in love, make love, enjoy time with family and friends (doing anything)

3 things behaviors you'd like to change: take things too personally, spend too much money, hate exercising

3 items you see right now: Pictures of family; picture Dad took of Lake Jackson home on Christmas Day a couple of years ago with 6” of snow around it; and the ever present computer monitors at work.
