Judy T. C. : In going through those old pictures of band camp, I came across your 1961-62 school photo. I think that's 4th or 5th grade. I'd sure love to post it.....

I also came across a 3rd grade photo of Mrs. Goddard's class that I was in. I'll post it when I get the chance.

What did the prefix BR stand for in the phone number BR 549?

Dee Allen

I remember that this was the phone number to Jr's Auto Sales.

BR549 was the area code for HeeHaw. Was this for a door prize?

I remember band camp and especially the grand daddy long leg spiders. Creepy!!! Somebody told us you could spray hair spray on them to keep them away. Made them a little crazy, but they still somehow found their way into the cabins. Great times and memories!!

You guys talking about Camp La Junta and band camp bring back a lot of found memories.

We always left on Sunday Morning and buses would take us to church in Kerrville on Sunday night. We had a movie on Monday through Wednesday night. Thursday night was the talent show and Friday night the dance.

Yes, we did stop in Seguin every year for lunch on the way to camp. Clute always had to practice at the Rifle range because we had the smallest band.

Ervin Ward (class of 70) had the record for most times gigged at camp. He had so many gigs that he could not work them all off. Mr Duncan remembered and assigned him to PKP (Permanent KP duty) the following year.

My wife is from the San Antonio area and her mother from near Kerrville. One year I was riding around the area with my sons when they were about 8 or 10 years old. When I told them about camp Lajunta, they asked if they could go there. I talked the administrator into having one of the councilers give us a tour. There is a new bridge and road going into the camp. No more fording the Guadalupe river at the spill way. The cabins are closed in and air conditioned. They actually finished off the insides of the cabins and painted them.

I don't think the counciler believed my story about going to camp there until I pointed out to my sons where my cabin had been. She looked up at me and said "Gee, you really did come here, we just tore that cabin down last year."

Never thought a trivia question about telephone exchanges would generate so many commets, even though it was answered numerous months ago. The only reason I brought it up was that I had lunch with Steve Stein (BHS class of '70) and Tony Barnard and Steve passed that bit of totally useless information on

CY CYpress
AN ANdrews
Be BElmont
And what the area code WAS, I had no idea when the question was asked (hoping one of you guys would answer it for me) so to prevent too much embarassment I looked it up -- 409 -- Beaumont/Port Arthur still use it.
Here is a real memory test -- there were TWO drive inn theaters in the aera until 1961 (Hurricane Carla). See if you can remember their names and locations -- and yes, I do know them.

And here is a Cold Case file for all you history buffs.
BHS band of 1966 (my older brother's class)made three records, 2 -- 45's and one Album, yes real vinyl records. I did have them until my Mom's house burned in '96. So if any of you guys out there have older siblings that might possibley posses these precious
relics please mount an expedition, and track them down. I would dearly love to convert them to digital.

Speaking of DOOR PRIZES. I haven't wanted to hound anyone but, other than Glenn Mallory, I haven't received any commitments. Come on people. Help me out here. You can e-mail me at djallenrv@yahoo.com and tell me what you will donate. Be creative.

Is this like old cow heads? White elephant kind of prizes?

Did you ever wonder why your parents and band teacher would want you to go to a camp with a name (La Junta) that means "a military group that controls a government after a revolution"?

07/01/09 12:11 PM #1448

Dickie Tracy

Steve, there were no area codes back then. When area codes did first appear, people quit saying CY-7 or AN-5 or BE-3. From the moment we got the 713 area code, it was 297, 265, or 233. Least that's the way I remember it. And we covered the drive-ins a couple of months back. The Surf across from Bodiddles and the TradeWinds across the canal going into Freeport. The one in Angleton didn't come until later and didn't last long.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Sorry, Dickie, area codes were introduced in Texas in 1947. Just about all of Brazoria county was 409 for years. The Brazosport area changed to 979 in February 2000.

You can donate old cow heads, headless Barbie dolls, or headcheese. I don't care. Do something, even if it's wrong.

Donors to Date (in alphabetical order, not because I want my name on top. I don't like to call attention to myself.):

**DEE ALLEN**
Delores Austin
Cyndie Chrystal
Joy Garrett
Glenn Mallory
Marian Sahr
Mike Strickland
Dee Ann Trout

Notice I used maiden names - That's because, according to Trout, I'm a sexist.

Carol knows when area codes came to Texas. She was 12 years old then and remembers it.

All of y'all are partially correct about the area codes. They were invented and distributed in 1947. The local Freeport operators started dialing the area codes for callers in 1953 when the phone company moved from the Cherry Street building in Freeport to the one on W Broad. (at least that is what my mother, former telephone operator tells me.)

The original area code was 713 and we did drop Andrew, Cypress, Belmont, Tilden(849 for Angleton) once the DDD direct distance dialing went into service sometime in the early '60s. Since then Brazosport was split out of Houston to the Beaumont area with 409 and most recently split out of Beaumont area to the 979 area code.

Collene:
Please tell me that you kept a copy of the words to "hello mudder, hello fadder, here we are at camp La Junta..."

If not, could you post what you remember. I remember Lee Appleberry and Dale Seay beating y'all out of first place with their rendition of "Long Tall Texan". I thought you guys were great and more creative.

For those of you wondering why our parents sent us to a camp named after a South American form of totalitarian government, well remember Mr Wade, gigs at camp, picking up rocks by flash light in the middle of the night on the practice field, wasn't the name appropriate?

All kidding aside, it is Spanglish for a camp in Hunt, Texas.

Ray I'm thinking you have tapped into some 'special herb' that has allowed you to retain your memory... wanna share? There are parts of band camp I remember but the words to the song are not rising to the top. I'll try to remember. And yes, I think we were cheated!!!!

Collene:
Well, I can not recommend any special herbs in general. Actually my answer is that I never really partook of any special herbs.

My wife says that I owe my memory to the fish oil capsules that she insists that I take. She is a dietitian with a masters in nutrition. I'm not sure I believe her.

The test is: Does she take fish oil capsules, too?

Its fireworks here in Cleburne on Lake Pat Cleburne, some good grilled food including grilled veggies from our garden and yes the highly anticipated new ICE AGE movie. Still hot in this part of the world, but thanks Lord for AC!

Thank you-how did you know I love the Chipmunks? It just struck me that I favor Alvin a lot-short and round in the middle!

I don't believe I'm related-maybe one of those distant relatives we don't know about. Will (my youngest works for the SO)
