QUESTION: What are the door prizes for?

ANSWER: LAGNIAPPE - They will be given out by drawing to those who attend.

I will bring the tickets. You will get one when you register at the door. Strickland has volunteered to conduct the drawing.

Just let me know if you are bringing something e.g. an old class ring, $5,000 gift certificate, a pre paid two week trip to Europe, etc.

Smaller gifts can be donated as well such as:
1969 Exporter football programs, or copies of same;
Life time Hall Passes, signed by the appropriate faculty;
40 year old dried homecoming mums, complete with 12 foot long ribbons and cow bells;
digital downloads of the Greatest Hits of 1969;
Hudson and Harrigan autographed photo, or copy of same; etc.

If you wnat to make something, I can get the Door Prize Committee to approve it.

DO NOT SEND ME ANYTHING. IF YOU CAN'T BE THERE, HAVE SOMEONE TAKE YOUR DONATION FOR YOU.

Carol, Winona, and Julie are off the hook.

Joe,

Yes, you can copy the photo. You can even sell it, if you want, if there is no copyright notice on it.

Trust me. You have my word, as a lawyer.

Are you gonna help Judge Huff? Why would you do that? I'm going to be sampling Ellise's salsa.

I had a class ring. I never wore it. 14k gold. Weighed about a pound. They don’t make them like that anymore. They could, but no one could afford them. It had a blue stone with an anchor embossed.
I sold it when I was in college. I needed the $$.
When I handed it to the guy at the gold exchange, I asked him what I could get for it. He said, let me weigh it. I handed it to him and he took out a big hammer and hit it as hard as he could. The stone became blue powder and the ring looked like shrapnel from an IED. If I had any second thoughts of selling it, they were crushed, along with the ring. I understand that it is now buried in a grave in some old woman’s upper molar.

I found a poem I had on my computer. I wanted to share it with my BHS family. I hope you are blessed by it in someway.

“A Balanced Life”

My life has been balanced
with pleasures and trials,
I’ve had many tear drops
and thousands of smiles.
I’ve soared with the eagles
and I’ve plunged to the sands,
My life has been balanced
by God’s loving hand.
I’ve had many friendships
I’ve had a few foes
In the life of a Christian
that’s the way that it goes.
Should I accept
only good from God’s hands?
No, I must endure
whatever He plans.
But I can be sure
and you can be too,
All things work for best
as God deals with you.

Kitty Allison had a question about a chocolate cake she same on my Facebook page.

Below is the recipe, and a bit of history about it :

My Mother taught at Oran M. Roberts elementary in Lake Jackson, and Dr. Oscar Johnson's children attended Roberts. His wife used to make this delicious, decadent chocolate cake for the teachers, and shared the recipe with them. It was the cake we ALWAYS had for my birthday, since I am such a chocolate addict. And Kathy continued the tradition, but we stopped calling it Mrs. Johnson Cake - and just call it the chocolate birthday cake. ( and of course if you are in a pinch for time - there is the easy modern version; just don't modify the icing!!

Do others have a special recipe,especially if there is a story about the recipe.

Chocolate Birthday Cake a.k.a. Mrs. Johnson’s Cake

Sift in mixing bowl:
1 cup flour
2 cups sugar

Mix in a saucepan:
2 sticks of butter
4 Tbsp. cocoa
½ cup water ( for even richer cake use ½ cup of buttermilk )

Bring to a boil and pour over flour mixture.
Mix well.
Add ½ cup of buttermilk
Mix
Add::
2 slightly beaten eggs
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon
Mix well and pour in a greased 15 x 10.5 x 1 inchpan.

Bake 25 minutes at 425 degrees or until done.

While cake is hot, ice with the following:

Bring to a boil in a saucepan:
4 Tbsp. Cocoa
1 stick butter
6 Tbsp. milk
Remove from heat and add:
1 Box confectioner’s sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup of coarsely chopped pecans

Easy Modern Version

Substitute moist chocolate cake box mix, and use icing…..
( not as good, but easier )

Hey all!! I took the 1999 pic off the wood plaque to get it scanned at Staples and on the back is a copyright declaration. I hate it when people use my surveys over and over and I don't get compesation. Oh well I was told by the lady at Staples if we could contact the person who took the pic we could "legally" scan it with their permission. OK legal Dept. next step and do we know who took this pic 10 years ago.

Thank you to everyone who prayed for my nephew. He received good news tonight from his doctor. It was only stage 2, which his doctor says is curable, and it was all contained in the one kidney. We are very, very thankful and relieved to hear that. Thank you again to each one of you.
==================================================

We are very happy to hear this news, and we believe God for a complete touch from Him for your nephew. Alice

I want you all to know of the dedication of one of YOUR reunion team members. Maria has been a vital part of this reunion. She started tracking updated contact information last summer and didn't stop until the mail out this Spring. A few months ago Maria was on vacation during a scheduled reunion meeting so she spent well over an hour on a cell phone so she could 'be there'. Lately Maria has been spending pretty much every waking moment either at her store or at her father's side. If you've been part of that kind of agony, you know how bone numbing tired you become. Still she came to Sunday's reunion meeting. She didn't just show up either, she was a big part of the meeting. When you see Maria in September, give her a hug because her dedication helped create your reunion.

After reading the planning meeting minutes it appears bribes may be in order for the cook-off, so perhaps we should expand the judging to include some of the Friday night registration helpers….. so I am nominating Alan Weddell and myself to assist Carolyn Huff.
Just want to let Dee Allen know that Joy Garrett has made a package deal – Coach Weddell and I would get our own facials, with a pedi / mani thrown in while dining on Texas Sheet cake at her beach house rental if we vote for her Chili AND vote for Jolie as most adorable grandbaby !!

What do you have to offer to top this type of bribe ? Let’s hope it is not Mike Strickland showing us his disk from 5th grade – and hate to bring any reality to some of our fuzzy memories, but Strickland bought those disks by the dozens once he found out how girls swooned when he would trade disks with them ! We all know Strickland probably won’t come to the reunion anyway as he is so embarrassed about having to take Carolyn Huff’s final just to graduate !

So let’s see what Dee can come up to top Joy’s offer as Weddell was in Austin last week, and coming back this week-end - it taking a lot of planning to figure out how to run a registration booth at the football game.

I'm on a 6 day vacation and headed to the big N (Nederland) to watch my grandson's (14 yr. olds) AllStars tournment. He is one of the pitchers and he told me he is very nervous. If they win this, off to Arkansas. I love that state especially Hot Springs. My oldest daughter and I have taken several trips there. Then, if they win at Arkansas, it will be Vermont. Not sure if I can make that one because I have another seminar coming up in Austin (I love Austin, just have to take my allergy pills). Have a great weekend. Marian

Go Marian! Arkansas is an awesome state and Hot Springs is really cool We stayed at the Arlington THE HOTEL THAT TAKES YOU BACK IN TIME. It reminded me of the 50's. And girl if you have not been to Mount Magazine and if you have time go up the spiraling road to the top and you are on top of the world in Arkansas. Go All Stars pitch a no hitter!!

07/23/09 07:11 PM #1585

Ray Beets

Joe: You are so right about Arkansas. There are some great places to visit there.

Rod: Are you out there monitoring our site?

My wife and I (Betty class of 69 Ursuline of San Antonio) visited Rod Balderree (Brazosport class of 68) and Carol Finster Balderree (Brazosport class of 69) last month up in Heber Springs, Arkansas. They have a great life there and it is a wonderful place to visit.

Rod would really like to see everyone at the reunion, but so far we have not been able to talk Carol into comming down in September.

As I promised. Those who volunteered, this week, to donate door prizes are named at the top of the list, in all caps. For those who are named below, this is not a special honor. I just tried to shame more donors into responding.

* *CARRIER, NANCY* *
* *DORMAN, DIANNE* *
* *MARSH, CONNIE* *
* *MCBRIDE, MELINDA* *
* *REICHENBACH, GERRY SUE* *
* *SNAVELY, JANIS* *
* *SULLIVAN, CANDY* *
Allen, Dee
Austin, Delores
Chrystal, Cyndie
Garrett, Joy
Mallory, Glenn
Mangum, Janice
Sahr, Marian
Strickland, Mike
Trout, Dee Ann

More door prizes are welcome.

Where are all the ex-jox? No one has offered to donate any stolen practice jerseys. What ever happened to that missing bag of Wilson JV-5 footballs that I ran so many wind sprints for? Maybe someone still has some of those little yellow salt tablets that we were supposed to take, instead of chunking them away; or maybe a bar of CRAMER soap (where do you buy that stuff?). Maybe someone could donate a jock-strap, smeared with Atomic Balm. That was always a hoot.

Poehl – I’m not going to stoop to the level of attempting to bribe judges. One taste of my GUMBO and the judges will be begging to be released from their unholy pact with Joy. My GUMBO speaks for itself. A few Rolaids keep it from speaking to loudly.
