School Story:

After graduating from Carbon High, I joined the college of hard knocks. I began taking in lawns to mow in Carbon and Eastland but soon landed a job at the Boss Glove factory in Cisco. After working there five years during which time I married Nada Beard of Arkansas and added one daughter and one son to our family.

When I left the glove factory I hired onto a construction job in Arlington, TX. It didn't last long. After that I drove a truck for a feed company for a couple of years or so then went into construction again as a laborer. After about eight months I got my union Journeyman carpenters card which resulted in higher wages. I continued to work as a carpenter until retirement in 2000.

Since retiring, I've taken up several hobbies one of which is reading. I have read more books since I retired than I've read in all of my previous life.

A funny school story?: It must have happened during my Sophomore year. A high school senior ran a race with me to the bike I had ridden to school and won the race, grabbed my bike and rode to the end of the ball field where he pick up a couple of other boys. One for the back and the other for the handle bars. The three of them rode it all the way down the hill to downtown before they collapsed the rear wheel.

They felt so badly about ruining my bike they bought me another wheel. I've always wondered if in the end they thought their short ride was really worth it.

Do you still have family in the Carbon area?

Our daughter and husband, John Johnson, live in Eastland.

How old do you feel?

I'm beginning to feel my age so I guess I'd better start taking good care of myself in case I live to be an old man!

What are your favorite places to go?

My favorite places besides home is anywhere decent folks are getting together for a good time. That would include the Carbon Home Coming! After going to somewhere like that, there is no place like home sweet home! Just give me my bed and a good book!

Any words of wisdom?

Always keep in mind that no matter what you are doing or what you have done, God our Father loves you more than you can ever know!

We as human parents don't always approve of our children's decisions but we never stop loving them no matter what. Even when we don't like what they've done or what they are doing.

If we can love our children like that, how much more does our Heavenly Father love us? After all, He created us for His pleasure! If anything should motivate us to love Him back, surely that should!
