Please go to the tab of  missing warriors on the left side  and let us know if you know any of the names of their parents. Thanks.

I had to come back to C.R. two weeks ago 23 degrees for a high.  Wow, woke me up.  A lot different from down here in Panama City, FL.  Everyone take care of yourselves and stay warm.

Hi Jim,

I want to thank you for creating this  website. You did such a great job on it, and it's allowed to "talk" with others prior to the reunion!  Thanks so much Jim!  Nan

Larry Olson (Teacher)

This is Larry Olson, I taught American Heritage from 1963 to 1966. That was my first teaching position and I'm convinced that I learned more from my students than they learned from me. Those wonderfully inquisitive students inspired me. It's so interesting to read what my students did as adults. And I'm saddened to read of too many who are no longer with us.

I taught at Evanston Township High School in Illinois from 1966 to 1993 teaching American History and American Literature similar to Heritage. I would enjoy hearing from any of my students; I may not remember all but connecting again would be so interesting. I check this website often but you can also email at ldolson37@gmail. com   My best to all   Larry

So good to hear from you Mr. Olson.

I do hope you might consider coming to the Reunion in August.  Jim Cox is tasked with finding teachers and inviting them, so please pass the word if you stay in touch with anyone.  It would be such fun to visit with you and I know others would agree.

I have found numerous photos from our American Heritage trip that I am certain you would find memorable.....or frightening....  I count that trip and AH class as two of my favorite memories of my three years as WHS.  I have enjoyed the faculty interviews, particularly those with Mr. Hollenbeck and Mr. Jacobson and it would be nice to add your interview to the site as well.

Who would have guessed that you were such a new teacher at the time.  You had us all fooled!

Janelle

Am I crazy or does anyone else recall seeing Northern Lights in Cedar Rapids during summer, likely between 1958-1962?  (By the way, it's not a 2-part question, so hold the smart comments, please.)

Paul, you saw the lights alright.  When my dad and I went to the races at Hawkeye Downs at night they would light up the whole sky.  Something you don't forget.

Hi Paul.  I was thinking the same thing.  However I seem to remember that I didn't think it was a "spectacular" showing.

I ran into Dan Daniels as he was starting to bulk up to try wrestling or "wrastling" as I called it to distinguish it from collegiate wrestling. I was a neighbor to Jack Machecek whose dad was the "M" in K & M pharmacy, near McKinley. Over those few months Dan became quite impressive, physically. Lost contact with him after that. Thanks for the information.

Although Landy was not in our class I am certain everyone who followed sports knew him. Landy is arguably the best athlete to ever attend WHS. He was a close friend of mine since my junior year. I will miss him greatly

Landy Waller

February 4, 2021

Landy Gordon Waller, III, 70, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away following a short illness on February 4th, 2021. He was born May 14th, 1950, to Magnolia Waller and Landy Gordon Waller II in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Those close to Landy knew he loved playing cards, going to the casino, and watching any and all sports. Landy also cherished time spent with his close friends and family.

Landy was a graduate of Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, was a standout athlete in several sports, including football, track and field, and wrestling. During his outstanding athletic career, Landy won eight varsity letters. In football, he was a two-time 1st team all-conference player. In track and field, he was a two-time state and conference champion in the long jump, in addition to winning the event at Drake Relays in 1968. Landy held the long jump conference record of over 23’ for more than 20 years. Most notably, Landy won more than 50 consecutive wrestling matches, including the state championship as a junior. He continued his athletic success as a wrestler at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), where he placed 3rd in the nation as a sophomore and was named an All-American. Landy was later inducted into the UNO Hall of Fame, as a member of the 1970 wrestling team and the WHS Hall of Fame in 2002. During the induction ceremony, Landy was deemed “one of Washington’s all-time best athletes.”

Landy is survived by all of his five children, Deatra (Doug) Waller-Norem, Landy Waller IV, Lydale Waller, Adrian Arrington, and LaNeisha Waller. Landy had nine grandchildren: Marco Waller, Mario Waller, Amarri Waller, Logan Clark, Leyton Waller, LeQueal Waller, Lyace Dawson, Dominic Arrington, and Zoela Arrington. He also had one great grandchild, Reid Waller. Landy is preceded in death by both parents, stepfather Charles Fields, and brother’s Karl Waller and Ralph Becicka. Landy is survived by his sisters Paulette (James) Clark, Delores Davis, sister in-law Delores Becicka, and brother Olen (Lisa) Gibson. Landy also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends Lawrence (Joe Rob) Robinson and Dr. Rueben Demous, all of whom he loved dearly.

Donations can be made to Landy’s Memorial Fund at https://www.gofundme.com/f/landy-g-waller-iii-memorial-fund, or by check (made out to the “Landy Waller Memorial Fund”) and sent to:

covid - a year of it - what have we learned?  And how are we living differently?

Hello Fellow Classmates,

Do any of you remember going to Danceland Ballroom in downtown Cedar Rapids? Did you go see The Yardbirds, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, The Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, The Animals, Chuck Berry, The Turtles or Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels? They all played there as did many of our classmates.

During one of our past Class Reunions a few of us were comparing notes and bragging about the bands we saw at Danceland. It was suggested that someone should make some sort of list deatailing all the great acts that graced the Danceland stage, In case you haven't quessed by now - that someone turned out to be me.

I dug through the archives of the Cedar Rapids Gazette and checked out all the Danceland ads to see who played there. I started gathering photos, articles, music files and anything else I could find. I archived all my research and ended up creating a website that chronicles the history of Danceland Ballroom. If you want to relive the past you can go to www.dancelandcriowa.com and check it out.
