Ralph Irwin Miller (1965)

I have said many times, what other period of time in your life had so much effect on you that would make you get together every five or ten years to talk about it? Maybe a wedding anniversary or a child's birth? You don't gather by the hundreds to do birthdays or anniversaries, however, at least I don't.

Pat Hagan (1968)

My sister, Lucy Hagan, was band captain in 1964 and if I remember Jensi Peck was Drum Major. If you look up Drum Major in the dictionary a picture of Jensi should be there. Tall and very confident, she was in control of the band.  I had a crush on her, as a 14 year old at Northside Junior High.  The City High band was so good back then.  Great memories.

Rick speaking of the Hall of Fame as you know your mother in law Betsy Pearson was a charter member of the CHS Hall of Fame. Besides being a great educator she was recognized for her brave contributions as a member of the French/Belgium resistance during WW ll.

Thank you for those kind words about Betsy Pearson, Douglas. I'll be forever grateful to her for introducing me to her daughter Elisabeth. We've been married for 51 years. Her parents lived with us for several years, late in life.

I, too, will always be grateful for Betsy Pearson.  I did not begin studying French until my junior year, but what I learned in Madame Pearson's class led me to a B.A. and M.A. in French.  She was a great example for me during my twenty plus years of teaching.  Her teachings and those of Mr. Schwall were extremely beneficial, as well, during my twenty-six years in Naval Intelligence.  We were blessed to have had Madame Pearson, Mr. Schwall and so many other high quality people on our faculty.  City was great, wasn't it?

It made my wife Elisabeth so happy to hear about your tribute to her mother, David. I'm sure you told Betsy Pearson about your degrees in French. Needless to say, I share your respect for her. She cared about her students, and helped introduce us to the wider world. Fascinating to hear about your career in teaching, and also in Naval Intelligence!

Thanks for asking, Tom. 1993, and 2006, respectively. Here's a very incomplete bio I just found online--         https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pearson-12642

Thanks to all for bringing up many memories of my time a CHS.  I too would like to speak out kind words for Madam Pearson.  I took her class in my junior year as well thinking this is something easy and that I would never use.  I was wrong on both thoughts.    The class was tougher than I thought and I have used the knowledge of the French language in my many years of travel with my company as I went to France on three occasions.  I thought of her many times and gained an appreciation for the French people as one of my co workers over the years was from France.

Thanks to all for the words about the band and bringing up those memories of Bristol and the many competitions we were in over the years..

Lu Jean Wade (Bedard) (1968)

Madame Pearson was a very memorable teacher when I had her during my junior year.  She always called me "Lulu."  Little did I know that French would be my minor in college, I would visit France many times, and I would marry a French Canadian whose mother spoke no English.  We never know where life will take us and I am grateful to have had such an excellent teacher in high school.  Whenever we're in Chattanooga and go down McCallie Avenue, I always remember that Madame Pearson had a beautiful house there.

The death of Shelton Goldblatt, a friend, saddens me, but makes me happy to have know him since our early days of playing JV football together as freshmen.  His kindness and unassuming acceptance of people will always highlight his life for me.

John Summers (1970)

I am sorry to relate that Jerry Poe Class of '69 passed away earlier today.  Jerry had been in poor health for some time and was confined to home.

His brother Rick '71 just arrived in Chattanooga from upper East TN to assist with the arrangements.   Jerry will be at the Chattanooga Funeral Home on Hwy 153.   Details of the arrangements should be posted on their website once they are finalized.

Rick can be reached at 423-747-5076 or nimajo@aol.com or through this webpage.

Jerry and Rick were my brothers.  One a year older and one a year younger.  We lived two doors down from each other from the first grade at Normal Park, through Northside, then City.   We went to church together, school together, in the band together, even double dated together.  Then we went our separate ways, but we have always been friends.   I was at their parents funeral and they were at mine.   The stories I could tell are too numerous.

Jerry was a friend to everyone.   Just a good guy who loved Chattanooga and stayed.   I was fortunate to have shared a major portion of my life with him.   We all were.  Rest In Peace my friend.

John Summers '70
