Don Paul (1969)

Tom Papson bullied me in junior high at North Chattanooga Junior High. One day during lunch, he came over to my table and asked me, “Don, do you know what a playboy is?’ I answered, “I...guess it’s a boy who plays?” Tom went back to his friends at the table across the way, and they all laughed. And yet, I was with Tommy all through elementary, junior high, and high school, and we got along pretty well. In hearing about his passing, my heart sank. I feel, that even back then, I had a crush on him. He was so handsome and muscular and had such a great smile. I’m sure he developed into the “mensch” he must have become. Again, I didn’t develop fast and did have girlfriends and relations and was neither straight or homosexual. My feelings of sadness I’d like to share with his family and wish them the best. I will miss him a lot.

I remember Tommy Papson as one of our best football players and also as a good wrestler.  We had a great pep rally when we were up against the Brainard Rebels and had a casket on stage for their demise.  Unfortunately we did not prevail.  I remember Tommy well up on the stage with the injured members of the team at the end of the season. I am sorry for his passing and hope others in the class will remember him for his contributions to the school.

Tommy was a great guy.  He was always nice and polite to me, and was always a kidder.  We did have some laughs together. We always spoke and caught up at the last few reunions . He had a great smile ! He will be rememmbered in heart and mind.
