Mitch:  a lot of us went from 1st grade thru 9th grade when Chula Jr High went on "split shifts" and then the new High School (Hilltop) opened.  So many of us have years of being together with Hilltoppers. 1964 grads of both schools came from one source....Chula Vista Jr. or Sr.

Can you help identify the guys in the wedding photos in the "Who Are They" pictures?  Jack Blakely submitted the photos.  It's Skip Burrough's wedding from 1964.  Can you help?  Can any one tell any stories about the wedding or the party in the photos?

Regarding the photos from Skip's wedding, I think I recognize Bill Virchis and Arturo Gomez.  It's great to see old photos.

Anita:  do you have your prom photos?  We're trying to get as many prom pics as possible and see if we can get any memories.  Now I'll have to figure out who is Bill and Arturo!

Glenda,

I think I made a mistake on a name.  I said Arturo Gomez, but I think his name was actually Armando, but I'm not sure since I didn't really know him.  I believe that he and Bill Virchis, brother of Martha, who was in our class, were in the class of 62 or 63.  In photo #1, Bill is in a tan or gold sweater, holding a bottle of ketchup in front of Jack.  In photo #3, Armando is in a dark suit on the far right, in front of Pete Brown.  If I'm wrong in my identification, someone please correct me.

Well I'm off on Tuesday helping a friend, Mike Wilson, who will be riding the solo RAAM (race across America) a bike race, non-stop from Ocean Side CA to Annapolis Maryland. He hopes to make it in about 12 day riding 21 hours a day. I will be driving a night support/safety van for him.
I just got back from helping another friend sail is 35' sailboat from Tampa Bay down the Gulf to the Bahamas, then up to North Carolina. It was a two month adventurewith a few exciting days during a storm in the Atlantic Gulf Stream. Dennis

I have pictures of Kathy Rusnak, Sharon Neely, Carol Kittrell, and Lee Cox from the senior picnic.  Also have some pictures of Spartanettes.  Do need individual permissions to uploas them or does someone screen the first?

Joanne:  you can upload photos from your Profile Page.  If you want, email them to me and I will post them to the Spartan Gallery.  Maybe I should open a Spartanette Page?  That might be fun

What stories or memories do you have of The Vogue movie theatre? Share.

The Vogue.  Was it $0.60 for two features and a cartoon?  Or did we still have newsreels between movies?

Several people have posted GREAT photos.  Having been away for 50 years, I really enjoy seeing how our fellow alums look today.   Thanks!!  I hope more people will do it.

My brother Gary and I went to the Vogue every Saturday for the matinee, which was usually a movie and several cartoons, plus a Bowery Boys serial! Candy was 5 cents and 10 cents (Jujubees, Dots, PomPoms, Milk Duds, Sugar Daddys, Look bars, and all that good stuff). I think it was quarter to see the movie. My favorites were monster movies like "It Came From Beneath the Sea!" I thought the film Matinee did a good job of capturing that expeirience, with kids throwing popcourn and making their candy boxes into noisemakers . . .

I think it was a double feature and we also drove those poor gals at the concession stand nuts.

I don't know what they were paid, but I'm sure they earned every bit of it.

Jackie - I remember you.  Gary also rings a bell.  Is he older/younger than you?

Gary is one year younger. We were all in the band--I was in the flute section, and he played clarinet.

Saw lash laptop at the vouge. Used to be a quarter on Saturday morning for two features.between shows minor cowboy actors would perform on stage. my grandparents were good friends with the owners Walt and olga Duvall. much fun in a more simple and innocent time. the dime store across the street was the target of anti red China nuts. a nut would leave small printed cards warning a buyer that an item was made in red China. and so it goes

Bob - I think you meant Lash LaRue?  He was quite the hero of those short westerns.

Loved The Vogue - also the other theater, The Seville, further down Third.  Not as nice as the Vogue, which was "modern," but still a place to see some great movies, cartoons and shorts.  I think the Seville also had a balcony...anyone remember?  And...to a previous comment, I believe they had "newsreel" features too and the occasional "travelog" short feature too.

We didn't have a lot of $$ around our house, but Mom always took my sisters and me to the movies, seemed like every weekend.  My wife is still astounded when we see an old movie like "The Searchers," and I can recall having seen it at The Vogue when it was first released.

About the only other treat we got was when Mom took us with her to shop on Third Ave - a rare event.  She always took us to the walk-up window at Mel's Root Beer stand.  Any one else remember Mel's?  They had wonderful burgers (they were all wonderful when you were a kid, eh?) and great root beer too.  Burgers came with mustard and onions.  Every once in a while, I have one like that and I always think of those at Mel's.

I think when we were in Elem school the movies were less than 25 cents.  How old we are eh?

Rick Underwood and I walked all the way to the Bay Theater, in National City, in 1958 because we wanted to see the Blob and the Vogue was not showing it that weekend.

For those of you who stayed in the Chula Vista/San Diego area, this is probably no big deal, but on my last trip to Chula Vista (maybe 2011?), I took my wife and another couple from Provo to La Bella Pizza on 3rd Avenue.  It was so fun and brought back so many memories.  I lived just a couple of blocks from there, on 2nd Avenue, between G and H.  There was another Italian restaurant, I think on Broadway, called Pernicano's, or something like that.  Does anyone remember Pernicano's?

Joe Barrington

I remember Pernicano's.  I believe that they had a guy with a big moustache who in their advertisements.  Mostly went to LaBella's however.  Cheap food, lots of it, and not horrible.

Hey - Congrats to the kids from Eastlake Little League in Chula Vista!  They just won the West Region title and will go to the World Series in Williamsport PA.  What a thrill for the kids and a great life-long memory.  Back in '82, my oldest was a LL all-star and I was the all-star team manager.  We won our city championship and made it to the state tourney.  It was a magic and special time for us.

Any of you CVHSers got a grandkid on Eastlake's team?  Hope they win it all again like they did in 2009.  Go Chula Vista!!

Anyone know how to get in contact with any of these people that graduated from Hilltop in 64, John Vredenburgh, Walt Hess, or John Hammels?  If you do either let them know my email or let me know theirs.

Does anyone know how many people in our graduating class?

B ob:  I think I entered about 403 names of students.  Not all of our classmates graduated, some joined the military, others moved away, married, etc.  But I think that is the number of names I have.
