James Hawkins

James Robert Hawkins     March 28, 1944 - February 17, 2025

James Robert Hawkins, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died on Monday, February 17, 2025, at Waltonwood Cotswold Memory Care Facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, of natural causes.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 28, 1944, to James and Frances Hawkins, Jim graduated from Woodward High School, then he obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati and then completed his Medical Degree at the same university.

After medical school, he obtained an internship at Christ Hospital and completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. He followed his residency enlisting in the US Army in 1975 and was a Major in U.S. Army Medical Corps at Ft. Steward, Georgia, where he was Chief for the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health for two years. He then returned to Cincinnati in 1977, where he joined Dr. Glenn Weaver’s practice before starting his own private practice in 1985. During the remainder of his career, he had hospital affiliations at Christ and Deaconess Hospitals and courtesy staff at all others. At those hospitals, he held many administrative positions but most importantly, Medical Director, Department of Psychiatry and Older Adult Mental Health Program at Deaconess Hospital. Jim retired on October 17, 2023.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jody, his daughter Elizabeth Flinn; his son Rob Hawkins; his sister Mary Roth and her family; his sister Sarah Riley and her family; his grandchildren Tessa Flinn, Eloise Flinn, Sophia Hawkins, and James Hawkins.

Jim’s celebration of life will be held on June 14th, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Cincinnati Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island at this web address www.dingdarlingsociety.org.
