Henry Isaac, Jr.

Services on Saturday at the First Nazareth Baptist Church, 2351 Gervais Street, Columbia, South Carolina with burial to follow in the Memorial Gardens of Columbia, 9301 Wilson Boulevard, Columbia, South Carolina.

Henry Isaac, Jr. was born on June 17, 1949 in Columbia, South Carolina to Henry “Dubee” Isaac, Sr. and Mazie Furgess Isaac. God called him to his rest on September 8, 2010. He was known by many as Hank and to others as “Snookie.”

 

He began his education in Laurens, South Carolina, moving to the public schools of Richland County in the fifth grade. Snookie graduated from C. A. Johnson High School in 1967.  He was a superb athlete, having held the state record in the high jump. He was also a captain of the varsity basketball team and one of the school’s highest scorers. He continued his game and education at Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC. Being a natural athlete, he took up the game of tennis in his adulthood. At one time, he was ranked number 17 in the state in his age group (35-40), accomplishing many upsets along the way. He was a member of the United States Tennis Association.

 

At an early age, he was baptized at First Calvary Baptist Church. He was an active member of Francis Burns United Methodist Church, where he served on the Usher Board and Lay Visitation Team until his health failed.  

 

While matriculating at Johnson C. Smith University, he met Veronica Manigo on their first day at school. This relationship led to marriage on July 3, 1970 and to this union of 40 years, two children were born.

 

Henry was a member of Nu Gamma Alpha Fraternity, 100 Black Men of America, C. A. Johnson Men’s Breakfast Club, the Hornet Foundation, NAACP, and Johnson C. Smith University National Alumni Association.

 

Henry started his professional career as a corrections officer at Spofford Detention Center in Bronx, NY. He later relocated his family to Lochern, Maryland, changing careers to the insurance industry. He became an insurance representative for Educators Mutual Insurance Company in Baltimore, Maryland. He also worked with North Carolina Mutual Insurance before beginning his career with Horace Mann Insurance Companies in 1977. He attained the distinction of Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), and was a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters (NALU).  He enhanced his insurance career by establishing Isaac Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1990 with his wife.  Henry further expanded his work expertise by becoming a real estate professional. He most recently was affiliated with Asset Realty (ARI). He has attained Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) designation as well as a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS). He was a member of the National Association of Realtors and South Carolina Realtors Association.

 

Loving memories of Henry Isaac, Jr. will always be cherished by his devoted wife of 40 years: Veronica Manigo Isaac; daughter, Tameika Isaac (Jamie) Devine of Columbia, SC; son, Terron D. Isaac of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Tamia C. Devine and Jade L. Devine; sister, Patricia (David) Crummer of Cedar Park, TX; brother-in-law, Thomas (Dollie) Manigo of Fayetteville, NC, and sister-in-law, Vera M. White of Miami Gardens, FL; aunts, Mary Furgess Cooper of Columbia, SC, Hattie Furgess Outlaw of Waynesboro, GA, Norma Furgess (Edward) Myers of New York, NY, and Sarah Kate Furgess of Columbia, SC; uncles, Frank (Delores) Furgess and John (Alexzenia) Furgess, both of Columbia, SC; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
