CLASS OF 1970 - 55TH REUNION RECAP

The Roaring Twenty’s was the theme of the 2025 Homecoming weekend. And in keeping with the theme, we of the Class of 1970, also had a “roaring” good time.

Right after the pep assembly, the annual Homecoming parade was held in downtown Crystal Lake. It was a beautiful fall afternoon, and the downtown area was festively decorated for the annual Johnny Appleseed Fall Festival. We met at the Cottage and watched the band and the clubs march joyously by. We took a video of the parade, and we will try to upload it to the site.

This year’s football opponent was Jacobs High School from Algonquin. The Tigers came into the game looking for their first victory of the year. One new benefit was admittance to the game for a reduced senior rate. LOL. The Tigers were leading 21-7 midway during the 3rd quarter, but alas victory was not to be. In any event, the band sounded fantastic as always.

The Goal Line Bar and Grill was the meeting place for the Friday night get together. We had the front patio area by ourselves to mingle and talk. The weather cooperated and we were treated royally. The thrilling regional basketball victory over Barrington High School was recounted by Larry Willbrandt and Corky Plews. It’s always fun to remember the events of senior year.

On Saturday morning we met at the Fieldhouse to begin a self-guided tour of the high school. The class picture is still hanging proudly on the wall across from the old 105 study hall. The newly discovered fireplace, located at the front entrance, was appropriately decorated for Homecoming. TV monitors are mounted in various parts of the school where announcements are displayed. We peaked in the auditorium and remembered the assemblies, concerts and plays. There were so many talented members of our class. For a building of over one hundred years, the school interior is impressive. We can all feel very proud to be part of the history of Crystal Lake.

Unfortunately, The Freeze closed for the season in mid-September, so lunch was moved to the Crystal Lake Brewery, which is located where the Reichert’s automobile dealership used to be. As an aside, Mister A’s closed last year and a new café, Lake Roots, is now having its grand opening.

On Saturday evening, we rallied at Rookies in downtown Crystal Lake, for our informal reunion. Although we have not seen each other for several years, it is important to note that EVERYONE talked to EVERYONE. We have All experienced the ups and downs of life. Being able to share our stories and listen to our classmates is both inspiring and reassuring. Growing up together in the ”Age of Aquarius” does have its advantages.

A huge thank you to Julie Elsner Harney for getting the ball rolling this year. And we also, all owe Cindy Lester Powers our unending gratitude for all the hours she spends maintaining the CLCHS1970 website and coordinating the reunions.  The website has always been a tremendous success and has enabled us to stay connected through the years. Lately, however, there have been some problems with website’s operating system and Cindy has worked tirelessly to get the Committee’s information to you.

For those class members who like to plan ahead, the 60th class reunion will be held during the annual Homecoming celebration. The school does not release the date until the academic calendar for that year has been published. Tentatively it would be around September 28, 2030, plus or minus two weeks.

Go Tigers!!!!

FYI - Two ABC 7 Chicago newscasters, Mark Rivera and Rob Elgas are CLCHS alums. Our high school was featured on two separate news segments last month. The features can be viewed via YOU TUBE.
