Fredric Deckert
Robert,
I didn't attend many school functions unless the Band was involved. In 67 I did play the base drum in the 'Scopes Monkey trial' play. I never attended a prom. I stayed home and completed my days studies. I got to be a better student as time progressed from Jefferson Junior High days.
In March of 68 I entered the 120 delay delay plan and in July went to boot camp at Great Lakes, Il. Then to Miramar, Ca., South Vietnam and lastly USS Iwo Jima. Today I regret going to AE 'A' school. My performances reviews kept recommending to re-enlist. I never remembered what they said except I got 3.0 to 4.0 marks. I was having too much fun enjoying working with the F-4 Fighter and working on the flight decks. Once in Vietnam with the Seabees I never took time to read my rate book or leadership book. My courses were waived due to being in combat country. Being on the Iwo Jima in V-4 fuels Div. and in last year of enlistment I wasn't motivated in applying time to courses. Took E-4 test per Division officers persuasion and telling him I'd fail for not knowing the material. And I did fail. I did enjoy my time in the Navy working for my country to help protect our Freedom. Never a regret there. I'd do it again except to go to schools. All of my time was in San Diego except for Vietnam.
Thank You for Serving Shipmate.
Fred
