Cris,

You asked about a nearby campground, in Hicksville. I don't think there's anything in Hicksville.  The only one I know of is Battle Row, in Old Bethpage.  I've never been there, but I'm guessing it's ok.

? Not sure if we will venture out with camper or just drive and stay in Motel.. All depends on when and

where?   Smiles.. Hope to see  you there.. Cris B.

? Just thought this would be great idea for a Fun Thing at the Class Reunion

Rent  Photo Booth..I went to a wedding this summer and they had one there. It was a booth that you sat in front of with your friends or just you to have pictures taken in memory of in this case the Reunion. . It was the coolest thing. I believe it can be rented. ? Not sure how expensive but sure would be fun! I will try to find out more about it and how much and share here.. just a suggestion!

Just saw Stuart Ashers name on the missing list you sent out.

Stu Asher passed away suddenly from an aneurism on October 24th 2014.  I did send a post to this affect when it happened but I guess it never got loaded on your site.

I unintentionally organized a reunion last fall, just by attempting to keep retirees in touch and I noticed they could care less about food, drink or other activities and just wanted to reminisce. Not sure how much time should be allotted for this, but probably a good part of a day.

A June weekend would work well for us and provide me July or August to plan a trip.

I started a message and lost it!  So here goes again.  First of all, thanks to anyone organizing a 50th!!!  Second, I would like to consider coming from Oregon for it, but could not come until the end of June at the earliest, as some others mentioned, I think.  Some other thoughts:

  • No loud music!  The last few reunions were awful in that way - had to constantly find places to talk quietly.  Isn't that why we're doing this?  Who needs loud music!  I look forward to catching up with people.  We can listen to music any time.
  • For us out of towners, a hotel is always a lovely way to go.  We can stay, and there are usually nice places to meet in small groups.  I do Airbnb a lot and they're usually quite small.
  • I think I like the idea of visiting EMHS, but am no attached to it in anyway.
  • Scholarship fund is also a lovely idea.  What saved me in high school was Mr. Lederway, Sal Scala in the music department, and my dad - biology teach Mr. Glassman.  I'd be glad to contribute something towards finding good teachers.
  • Again for us out of towners, the expenses can add up, so I'd prefer nothing extravagant.  We don't need a DJ, we don't need live music (please no!), and just the idea of keeping the expenses down would be very helpful.

That's all I can think of at the moment.  Again - many thanks for our organizers.  I am very appreciative!

Ilana Sophia (nee Glassman)

Anywhere, any date, is OK with me.

And i have two ideas to add to all of the others:

ICE COLD YOO HOO FOR  EVERYONE!!!  (I will bring a couple of cases if they still sell it in NY)

INSTEAD OF MUSIC OR A DJ, WE CAN ALL HUM OUT LOUD (when we are not talking to someone).

I just thought  of something else:  WHAT ABOUT DEVIL DOGS?

I really look forward to getting together.

I echo all of the gratitudes to those planning this. End of June is also much better for me.

Looking forward to catching up!

I LIKE WHAT ILANA HAS TO SAY ABOUT NO LOUD MUSIC AND A HOTEL WITH PLACES TO GET TOGETHER.

I would like to agree with those that suggested a hotel. In view of the profile the largest group outside of New York is Florida. A hotel makes it easier for everyone from out of the area, in addition I would probably stay overnight, since I live in Brooklyn Heights, or take uber etc . I just think for those that plan to fly a hotel especially one that has airport service to JFK or LGA would be a nice consideration for anyone having to fly in. In addition the last week of June is easier because most organizations have annual dinners prior to that and many of them use hotels for those dinners. If anyone has a real desire to visit the school, it would be easier to rent a bus as a side trip to depart from the hotel on the day before etc. in view of Budgets etc, I really do not think you will be able to access the school, without paying fees for opening etc and for school employees to be present. For anyone that desires sweets and candies from their past you can visit economy candy in Manhattan  or check the store out on the web.

I started to laugh after reading Jake’s suggestions. I LOVE YooHoo and Devil Dogs. Even the low fat dogs are good. I, too, agree with the omission of music.  Someone must have  “ Alexa” and we can have her play music from the 60’s.  I live in CT so NY is my choice for the reunion.  We have driven through Elmont many times over the years but haven’t been inside EMHS since graduation  I would love to see it again.

Two more very important Suggestions:

1      .Christine is Brialliant:  of course, CHOCOLATE EGG CREAMS.    (but how; we sneak out early and find a diner?  get there early and meet at a diner first;  do they still have candy stores that make them?  I will lose sleep thinking about this)  Forget the Yoo Hoo, but we still go with the Devil Dogs.

2.   Francis got it very right; but if there is in fact no music source, we will HUM OUT LOUD only tunes from the 60s (maybe with a little Dion and the Belmonts from the late 50s?)   Wait a second, something is not right.  I thought there is no music after the 60s.

One more thought:  If the music is a distraction, or to (one o or two os??) loud, and my humming proposal is not adopted,  I will turn down or remove my hearing aide.    Others "similarly situated" (a lawyer phrase) should consider doing the same.

One more thing,  I will sneak in a Yoo Hoo for Francis, and anyone else who wants one.  But I need to know who wants one.

So we are working on the reunion plans and have lots of choices. My first suggestion is the same hotel we did the 40th at -it is a nice place  and available at this point for either June 23 or 30th, with better availability and and slightly less pricey (same meal and meeting room costs but room rentals are $139 per night as opposed to June at $169 for a Saturday night).

We had the 40th in October and the other 3 in June. Islip is close and an easy airport to get in and out of. Late June you get the beach, mid to late October you get pretty leaves. Water freezing cold and full of seaweed either season, just how we liked it.

I assume we get Jacob's Yoo-Hoose (can we get Mrs. Goldberg on the fire escape to announce it for us?) either season but it would probably taste better in June because it's warmer out. No DJ, just Beatles and other good stuff on the speaker system. You all get a vote on your favorite song to add to the playlist.

So weigh in on what you all think so far, please

Frank,
It would be great to have it at the same hotel.  Having breakfast with everyone the next morning was fun, especially if you didn't get to speak to everyone the night before.  The hotel also provided transportation to the airport.

Jake,
I would prefer an egg cream.

Frances Milstein (Poris)

Jake, can’t I have YooHoo AND an egg cream?  Frank, that hotel from our 40th is fine with me i thanks for investigating.  What about setting up an egg cream table?  We can buy some bottles of Ubet syrup (real egg creams are made with ubet) & hotel can provide milk & seltzer.  And Jake, I am Fran not Frances  ðŸ˜Š

Ellen Deutsch (Riseman)

Great idea! An egg cream table! Gotta have u-Bet syrup though! Hey - do they even make those seltzer bottles anymore?

Also, I for one miss a good, authentic black and white cookie - anyone else?

Ellen.... funny you should mention a Black and White Cookie.. I have the original recipe for them and I use to make them for my Classes every year.. The kids loved them! I don't think I will make it to the Reunion.. With my business and all Other trips I just cannot do it.. wished I could but enjoy!  Smiles.. Cris B.

I hate to sound like a bit of a downer while we are all discussing our reunion but at the bottom of today's forum messages I saw In Memory Debbie Helfand (date unknown). This was the first announcement I recall that mentioned her passing. Does anyone have any more details? Her and I were good friends in junior high and high school and then stayed in touch for a while after the last reunion. It is sad when we lose anyone from our class but even sadder to lose a friend. RIP Debbie.

Being a brooklynite since 1972, yes ubet is still produced, they did move the facility to Long Island, I think Hempstead. Great black and white cookies are still made in several bakeries If  the reunion takes place, I will pre order  50 of them, and bring them assuming I am driving. The bakery is caputos on court street in Carroll Gardens.

It is always sad when someone you knew and cared about dies. I grew up living next door to Patty Patterman and have many fond memories f the mischief we used to get into. Does anyone have any details about Patty’s life and death?

Debbie Helfand’s death is another shocking bit of information. I remember her as a bundle of energy!  My sympathy goes out to both Patty’s and Debbie’s families.
