Great memory Jeff! Mr. Miyagi would be proud.

Dan - 12.5
Michael - 10
Jeff A. - 6.5
Karry - 4
Carolyn - 3.5 (or 6.5 unofficially?)
Bill H. - 3
Angela - 1
Kurt - 1
Katie - 1
Marcus - 1
Bill B (and Susan!) - 1

Interstingly enough, Ralph Macchio appeared in another film where his character was named "Johnny." Here's a multiple part trivia question from that film.
1. In that movie, jam packed full of teen heartthrobs, who uttered the line, "Let's do it for Johnny!" ?
2..What is the name of this film?
3. What was meant by "Let's do it for Johnny!" ?
4. Name any three of the heartthrobs from that film and another movie they were in.
5. Oh, and what is the author of the book the movie was based on?

2. The Outsiders.
5. SE Hinton

Read it at Fair Oaks...

Two more points for Dan-o! The other questions are still up for grabs!

Dan - 14.5
Michael - 10
Jeff A. - 6.5
Karry - 4
Carolyn - 3.5 (or 6.5 unofficially?)
Bill H. - 3
Angela - 1
Kurt - 1
Katie - 1
Marcus - 1
Bill B (and Susan!) - 1

I never saw the entire movie, but I'm pretty sure Patrick Swayze (of Dirty Dancing fame), Rob Lowe (Wayne's World) and Matt Dillon (most recently in "Crash") were all in it.

Also C. Thomas Howell, and Emilio Estevez, I think.

Here's a song lyric from my end, so Carolyn can take part again:

People call me on the phone I’m trying to avoid
Can the people on TV see me, or am I just paranoid?

Oooh ooh, I know this one too! It's Rockwell (with a little help from Michael Jackson) singing Somebody's Watching Me.

Dan - 14.5
Jeff A. - 12.5
Michael - 12
Carolyn - 4.5 (or 7.5 unofficially?)
Karry - 4
Bill H. - 3
Angela - 1
Kurt - 1
Katie - 1
Marcus - 1
Bill B (and Susan!) - 1

Jeff squeaks into second place by correctly naming three heartthrobs and other movies (one point each) and Michael falls into third-but-still-in-the-thick-of-it with his knowledge of two additional heartthrobs sans other movie. I move up slightly thanks to Mr. Aller's question about the one-hit-Jherri-curled greatness that was Rockwell.

I suddenly am having a flashback of "Word Up" by Cameo.
Remember his red leather Athletic supporter in the video??

I'm twisted

Whoops. OK, how about "The Hitcher", and "Young Guns", respectively?

Man, I wish I could come to the reunion. Carolyn and I could trade off playing DJ.

Can you guess this song?

She said, "What's wrong? This shirt cost twenty dollars!"
I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"

seriously, Jeff...if you and Carolyn had a battle of the DJ's that night...i just don't know. i have a feeling very bad things would happen.

you back in germany now or u still here in the states?

09/12/08 10:21 PM #228

Jeffrey Allers

Yeah, we'd probably mix Elvis Costello with Public Enemy ("What's so funny 'bout...PEACE! PEACE! YO!")

OK, that's not entirely original--it's actually a quote from a late-80's movie--guess which one.

I'm still in Gastonia, North Carolina for a few weeks before flying back to Berlin Oct. 7.

Say Anything? I know it's Jeremy Piven who is now so fabulous in Entourage, but I'm not sure I've got the right film. Say Anything is my final answer though.

Oh and yeah, we'd have so much fun DJing together Jeff! I'm sorry you won't be here. Send me your playlist and I'll see what I can do. :)

Here's the updates for the scores - two new points for Michael and one more for Dan. Watch yer back Dan...Michael's creeping up on you!

Dan - 15.5
Michael - 14
Jeff A. - 12.5
Carolyn - 4.5 (or 7.5 unofficially?)
Karry - 4
Bill H. - 3

Nope, it's not "Say Anything." Try again!

On another topic: as our reunion approaches, I've been reflecting quite a bit on the past twenty years and the four before it. I've wondered if there was anything from my experience in high school that actually had a real impact on my life beyond the superficial (as in all the 80's films and music I know, or developing a taste for Milwaukee's Best). So I'd like to propose another question for this forum:

Name something from high school (positive or negative) that had a real affect on your life and how you live it even now.

It's only fair that I answer my own question first: In high school I thought that I was always a "nice guy", but I realized later that I was really pretty self-centered, trying to impress other people or prove myself to them. I didn't really learn until later how to be a true friend to someone--especially to the people who live "on the fringes" and don't belong to any clique. I guess that's one of the reasons I work with young people now--because I see so many who are friendless or fatherless, and I see them in a different way now. I wish I'd been that way in high school, but I think that was one of the lessons I learned from that time.

Anyone else?

Carolyn Crumley (Kleen)

Hey Jeff, last time I checked 1992 wasn't counting as late 80's :) (I Googled last night after guessing Say Anything). Same producer though and an incredibly good movie.

I need to reflect more on your other question and respond when my four year old isn't crawling on me. :)

09/13/08 09:35 PM #233

Jeffrey Allers

I thought it might actually be early 90's, but hey, my memory isn't what it used to be (it really started going downhill after having the twins, so I know what you mean about having time to think without them crawling all over you!) I do love being a daddy, though.

Wow--guess my post was a "message forum killer"!

Perhaps some of the deeper experiences from high school are too painful or too personal to discuss "out in the open" here. I just thought it would be interesting to ask how different people thought they had changed since high school.

I'm sure you'll all have a great time reflecting together in a few weeks, and I wish all of you well. And thanks for the web site and laughs we've had on the forum that have made it fun to get back in touch, even if I can't be there in person.

Alles Gute, und Tschuss!

A reply to your question Jeff. Now that my kids are in high school I see them struggling through the same bullshit. I wish they could see the future and realize that there is more to life. Although I will have to say, and I told this to my girls, High School will be the best 4 years of your life and the worst 4 years of your life. I wish in high school I would have said what i really wanted to say not what people wanted to hear. And fighting REALLY that was super stupid.

Hmmmm! That's a thinker Jeff, I'll have to get back on that one. Great post!

Carolyn Crumley (Kleen)

Jeff! Awe, it wasn't a killer, I needed to find some time to post. Here's some thoughts...
1. In honor of Mrs. Takasuka who always told us "Ryan and Kai" stories, I tell my students "Joseph and Michael" stories. They seem to enjoy them and it brings a little humor into the classroom.
2. Much like Jeff, I work with young people and hope to make their high school life a little more bearable for the 43 minutes each day we spend together. Lisa, I love your quote of high school being the best and worst four years of your life. It is so true.
3. With my own kids, I keep insisting that they refer to older people by Mr. or Mrs. rather than calling them by their first name. I think it's a cultural problem right now that people of our generation aren't comfortable being a "Mr." or "Mrs." and ask kids to call us by our own first name. I grew up calling Billy Brokaw's Mom, Mrs. Brokaw and feel weird calling her "Jeri" now. Kids need adult role models, not "friends."

That's all for now. I'll climb off the soapbox and leave you with a trivia question specifically for Cooper School grads...When and where was Arbor Day started?

09/25/08 10:57 PM #238

Jill Garton (Ward)

Arbor day was started in 1872...when Nebraska skies were very very blue.

Nice comments.

Yes, I'd agree that they are the best 4 years in that the problems you face are nothing compared to the responsibilities and challenges you have as an adult.

And they are the worst because you have no idea at that time that the problems you face are nothing compared to the responsibilities and challenges you have as an adult!
