Linda Novak Blanco

Profile Updated: October 1, 2013
Linda Novak
Residing In: Naperville, IL USA
Occupation: Professor of Mathematics, Joliet Junior College
Children: My daughter Ashley (who is single, by the way) is 29, a grad of San Diego State, and had been living More…in San Diego, now in LA working for CBS as a news producer. My son Joe graduated from the University of Arizona (where he earned a scholarship as a National Hispanic Scholar) in marketing. He is an account executive with Cumulus broadcasting in Tucson. I love my kids, loved their growing up years, but did not plan on being a single/working mom! They now offer me great places to visit!

I'm in my 5th full time year at Joliet Junior College, running the Chicago Marathon since 2009 with Team World Vision, involved in my church, Willow Chicago (the Loop campus of Willow Creek Community Church). I love Chicago and get into the city more than ever these days.
Yes! Attending Reunion
Comments:

I have included a lot in my "School Story" below, but some non-school things:
I vacation to Hilton Head Island every August.
I jumped out of a perfectly nice airplane for a cause (Western Dupage Special Recreation Association) a week before retiring from high school teaching in 2008.
I am running (well, walking and running) in the Chicago Marathon: teamworldvision.org/goto/linda
I have become active in my church, Willow Creek Chicago (we meet at 10 AM on Sundays at the Auditorium Theater in downtown Chicago), sing with their All God's People choir about once a month, and offer myself through the compassion & justice ministry.
Part of my outreach work is to tutor high school students in math a couple of times a week at Circle Urban Ministries in Austin neighborhood on Chicago's west side.
Last winter I took the Polar Plunge into Lake Michigan for Special Olympics.

School Story:

Loved growing up as a teacher during my years at Glenbrook South! I got hired striaght out of U of I (Go ILLINI!). I learned from the masters: Ralph Ganzer, Dick Wagner, and George Zerfass among others. Worked for the best bosses: "Doc" Bill Schreiner (principal) and John McConnell (Math Dept. I/S). While there, I sponsored the Orchesis Dance Club (fabulous annual shows!), the Math Team (always among the top in state!), taught math and computer math (anyone remember FORTRAN?), sold tickets at football games with Heidi Mullejans, served as President of the Glenbrook Teachers' Association (signed a couple of those great multi-year contracts) and in that capacity learned a lot about life and negotiations - which I wish I had put to better use when going through my divorce!), and cried when I had to miss my last month working at South in 1984 when I gave birth to Ashley. I really missed the students I had at the time, but also knew I would be moving on to a school closer to my home in Naperville. I retired from teaching in June of 2008 after 24 years at Wheaton North High School. One of my colleagues (who started there as a first year teacher when I first started there) was Don Helberg, GBS Class of '80! While there I got to teach just about everything from Algebra through BC Calculus. But now, not really retired, I teach at Joliet Junior College full time. I absolutely love it!
