The way I read it during set-up there is no "expiration" on the web site here, although they encourage you to register a unique domain name to make it easier for search engines to pick it up and make the site link easier to remember for everybody. I'll certainly look into registering if that's what it takes to save the site down the road.

Terry I'm sure you'd have the upper hand if it ever came to coding anything. I learned a little basic html years ago but since then I got lazy and started using MS Frontpage for the work site. Aside from playing with a few java applets I'm pretty much a novice.

Enough computer talk!?! All I'm interested in is the LJH reunion! Whether I go to the GHS one or not, I will be at the LJH one. Randy, once again thank you so very much for this site. I have heard from two dear friends that I'm sure I would not have heard from otherwise. Everytime I drive by the building, I want to stop and go in. I remember that several of us carved our initials in a tree on the right side of the campus as you are facing it that is no longer there and a basement window that was visible on the right side of the building as well. After seeing the tree gone, I decided to "believe" that our initials were still in the glass of that window and decided it not a good idea to verify that. Just believing that my initials are still a part of a building that represented so much more to me has to be enough.

I think I'll stop by over there this week and walk around a bit. I remember that they kept the main building pretty much intact, but I don't recall if any of the other original buildings survived. I'll take a few pictures while I'm there so everyone can see the changes.

p.s. Does anyone remember the name of the pizza place we all walked to after graduation? I do...

I am speechless that Susan Long defaced the home of our beloved LJH AND a helpless living tree! True confessions are good for the soul.
I egged the building to the left of the main building (can't remember exactly what classes were housed in that building) on the Halloween of my 8th grade year. My 13 year old brain thought it was hilarious to see the rotten egg spattered across the window. I wouldn't bother looking for it now if you walk around the building, though, Randy. I am happy to report I quickly outgrew my JD ways. I just hope Susan can say the same. (Randy said don't be shy on this message forum and the staute of limitatioins has run out on our crimes. If feels good to get that burden off my chest!)

I think Mrs. Evans classroom was in that building to the left wasn't she. Seems like Mr. Gardner's algebra class was there too. I have no idea where these memories are coming from. I can't remember where I put my keys or left my coffee cup, and yet somehow I'm seeing visions of ancient memories. Am I seeing clearly or am I remembering it wrong?!? When I was reading the post from yesterday about the main building I recalled that Mrs. Schwartze (who had one of the classrooms in the front of the main building) also had taught my Mom when she was in school. So if you thought she was old you were on target.

I also had a recent flashback about Norma Smith. She used to live in a house on Westgate off of West Market (right around the corner from where Asahi is now). I used to honk and wave as I drove my bus by her house. I stopped one day (in my car) and had a very funny discussion about bubble gum and Teacher's Pets. She was actually very nice and pretty laid-back when she was out of the classroom.

I also had a recent memory of the day Eleanor Smith and Carol Mabe were crossing Spring Garden Street after school (I think they were coming from volleyball practice). There was no traffic on the side closest to the school, but there was a car coming on the other side (headed west). Eleanor stopped at the yellow line, but Carol was gabbing away about something (probably regarding Joey Armeniox or Bobby Bailey) and she kept walking right in to the path of the car. She got hit by the right front bumper and got thrown up in the air, sailed over the hood and landed on the side of the road. Luckily she was relatively unhurt with only bumps and bruises. Carol was actually pretty calm all things considered, but it scared the crap out of Eleanor. When I asked her what happened her eyes were as big as saucers and she just kept saying over and over that "she just kept walking". Carol kept saying "I'm fine. Stop worrying about me." I bet she was a LOT more careful crossing the street in the future.

It's amazing what I'm starting to (re)remember. However, I confess that I don't remember the name of that pizza place we walked to on the last day.

The name of the place was (drumroll....) Sarji's! The building is still there but it's now some kind of place that sells baseball cards and other collectibles...

Wow I never knew about Carol getting hit by a car! That explains a lot (just kidding, Carol ;). Maybe that's why she decided to drive a TANK during high school. I remember all the guys thought it was so cool watching a small, cute girl piloting an ocean liner. She used to hold the steering wheel from the bottom because she was too short to use the 10-2 position.

Terry you're right about Mrs. Evans class... it was in the annex building - last classroom on the left. It might have been Mrs. Schwartzs' class, but I remember my first "brawl" was in 8th grade in some old lady's class on the main floor. I was sitting toward the front of the class, and some big bully was whacking me in the back of the head with these heavy folded paper wads shot from a rubber band... hurt like hell. I knew I was going to get my butt kicked, but after the second one hit I got so mad I rushed the guy's desk and dumped him on the floor. After what seemed like forever one of the assistant principals came in and broke it up, and by that time I remember desks ALL over the place and the old lady teacher cowering in the corner. I remember being in the hallway after that and I must have looked pretty bad because Carol Mabe saw me and stopped to ask me if I was ok. All I remember after that was that the bully got expelled and he must have been picking on a lot of people because I got several thank-you's after that. In a strange sort of way it was worth all the bruises. :)

Oh well, there's my long-arse story for the day (hehe).

Barbara Bowles (Armeniox)

Terry,

Talking about not remembering where you put your car keys and coffee mug...I'm wondering where I was in Jr. High! My best friend, Sarah Louise "Fred" Kay egging the school on Halloween...WHAT? I probably would not have participated in that mischievous activity but I'm still shocked at her wildness. YOU GO GIRL!!! Randy getting into a brawl in the classroom - GOOD GUYS DO WIN!!! I must have been in the wrong place or the wrong class at the wrong time to have missed out on Susan's tree carving and glass etching events and how on earth with Lindley being such a small school did I miss hearing about Carol getting hit by a car. How terrible! I'm glad she was o.k. Now I didn't skip school (much) but I feel like I have missed out on some pretty important happenings. I do remember lots of good times, good friends, hip-huggers, bell-bottoms, Dr. Shoal's, hot pants and halter tops. WE WERE ALL SO COOL!!! Or at least we thought we were...ha! ha!

Thanks for jogging my memory. It's all coming back to me now. I do agree that Lindley Jr. High was probably my favorite school time too.

Love to all,

Barbara

If you consider not getting killed "winning", I guess I qualify. :)

Oh, and I remember halter tops and hot pants VERY well. ;)

Does anyone else remember some kind of "Fair" we had maybe 9th grade? I seem to remember some booths that were set up in the alley between the main building and the gym...

Carol Mabe (Batchelor)

Ok, so I was gabbing to Eleanor when I got hit... but I will plead the fifth on the content of our discussion. There was this big dent and skid marks on the hood of the car, the poor lady driving was mortified. When I got home, Chris Pugh and I went in my house, told my mom I had just been hit by a car and she thought we had lost our minds. When reality did finally set in, she lost it and called the Dr. She had to wake me up every hour during the night to be sure I did not have a concussion. I sure was sore after that! Randy, you are probably right,I did land on my head which could explain alot after that! The greatest thing about that incident was the outpouring of cards and notes that were sent to me from all my friends during my time at home. You guys were some of the best friends I have ever had.
Does anyone remember the doubledecker bus trip that the chorus group took? And the morning Susan Long ironed her shirt collar with it on and ended up with a second degree burn on her neck? Or the funny superlatives at the end of our final school year?

09/25/08 01:38 PM #22

Joey Armeniox

Sooooo Carol got hit by a car....that truly does explain everything! It is truly a blessing that I didn't see her flying through the air because no one would want to see someone as cool as me freaking out and crying like a baby! (ha ha)
Funny, my memory works like Barbara's. I remember things like being in the front of the school and watching Nick S get arrested (or at least detained) by authorities for consuming alchol (actually high powered cologne) before classes. Being the cool person I was, wearing the white socks up to my knees, and yes the very cool platform shoes. Didn't the chorus go to Raliegh for that bus trip? I think that was it. You know the facts are that everyone was "very cool" at LJH, and I concur that you all are the best group of folks I could ever have grown up with. One thing I learned from attending my 30th Smith HS class reunion was that I truly enjoyed my LJH days more.

09/25/08 05:54 PM #23

Susan Long (Smith)

Isn't it nice to have "friends" remind you of things you did that you had successfully blocked out of your memory!! (Thanks for the iron story reminder, Carol. I really did have to dig deep to remember that one. Are you sure I didn't say that I burned my neck with a curling iron!!) Randy, it looks like you have the side reunion already taken care of; however, I have been meaning to call the apartment complex that is now occupying our "beloved school" to see if they have a "club house" or "reception room" that we could use. It's awfully generous of you to offer your home; but if that's what we indeed do, you really ought to let your guests pitch in and help. Everyone (well, at least the home folk who are still living in the area) could bring drinks and/or snacks to share. I was already reconsidering my decision to attend the GHS reunion and after reading Joey's comment, I don't think I will. I will, however, attend the LJH gathering because the only people I really wanted to see at the GHS reunion were LJH people anyway! :)

I started to ride by the old school today and take a few pictures, but it was so overcast I decided to wait until Saturday or Sunday when the sun was out again. I didn't notice a building over there that looked anything like a reception hall on my last drive-by, but I'll certainly check while I'm over there.

As far as using my house goes - I'm happy to do it. I figured everyone would be more comfortable in a setting where we could just sit around and talk as long as we wanted without worrying about having to leave at a certain time. We have plenty of fridge space downstairs as well as plenty of seating, so unless we get a huge turnout (which right now doesn't look likely) there should be plenty of room for everyone. Of course, if you guys decide you'd rather do something different I'm certainly open to suggestions. :)

I already signed up for the Grimsley thing so I plan on going. There will be a ton of people there I don't know, but I haven't been to one since the 10th and I may never get to another one. Besides, I want to show off my trophy wife. ;)

09/26/08 01:39 PM #25

Joey Armeniox

I totally agree with Susan. I would feel much better if you let us chip in, and (at least) purchase some of the drinks and snacks for this shin-dig. I will be glad to do that Randy. Wouldn't it be a hoot if the old school had a club house or something like that and we could go there and just hang once more for old times sake! Susan, that goes to prove that girls indeed have more brains than guys! However, I do think they converted the whole thing to condo's

09/27/08 01:35 PM #26

Terry Williams

Count me in for monetary support as well! At the very least I'll be glad to pick up anything you might need from the store (or the likka store ;-) I'm still not really used to the fact that here in Michigan you can buy liquor at the grocery store or CVS. And... much to the shock of the powers that be in North Carolina there aren't flocks of people stumbling around drunk because it's so easy to get. Except when there's a home game like today- there's likely to be any number of half-blind folks on the way to and from the "Big House" which is about two miles from where I live. On game days Ann Arbor doubles in population. It's pretty wild! It's like a Carolina-State game, but twice as big.

I finally found the office of the company that hosts this website and it is right across the street from Michigan Stadium. Literally in the shadows of it.

Even if the apartments at the old LJHS don't have a gathering space it might still be fun to walk around and see what is still there. I'd really love to get some pictures of the group standing out in front of the old Main Building.

Maybe Carol will pose in the crosswalk !?!?!?

(I think I might have pulled something when I fell off of the chair)

I am really psyched about getting folks together. I'm really looking forward to it. Do you think Ogden will ever fill out his profile? I think we should all send messages asking when he's going to share some info. Inquiring minds want to know! (at least I do)

09/27/08 03:46 PM #27

Randy Melton

As far as "monetary" support goes: Fuggitaboutit!

I'll stock up the fridge with some beer/soda and pick up a few bags of this or that and maybe some dip, and the rest of you just bring what you feel like. If you're like me I'm WAY more interested in seeing you guys again than worrying about what I'm going to be eating anyway.

The weather Monday is supposed to be sunny so I'll head over to the old school and walk around a bit and ask questions and take a few pictures. If you guys are serious about going over there maybe we could just meet there first and head to the house afterward. Let me scope the place out good Monday and we'll talk about it more.

And by all means bug the crap out of Ogden until he posts some info. BTW you all need to post pictures!

Wow! I have been reading these posts and my mind has gone back to...Way Back When!.... My mind is Jello, and I cannot remeber many things, but I do remember Norma Smith (who could smell bubble gum when it was still in your pocket wrapped up). And I don't remember many thing s after that, but maybe it's because my mind is trashed from so much beer and pot all those years ago (just kidding; or maybe just kidding.)I remember so many people and want to see all of you so much! I am going to try to make the reunion, and will do what I need to do to get there, but remember, if I don;t make it it is not because I do not want to be there! It is because I cannot get there, but will keep trying until I do! Randy, thanks for calling my mom and finding out where I am. I am so grateful to you for putting this together!

09/28/08 08:23 PM #29

Carol Mabe (Batchelor)

Susan, you have to go to the GHS reunion b/c I will know all of 4 people there...and it couldn't have been a curling iron because you had really short hair!! At least the guys didn't start a rumour about a hickey!
I will go where ever you guys decide for the LJH shindig and of course "chip" in on any food or beverage. I am just looking forward to seeing everyone. I did contact Kathy Vidler last weekend through the HPCentral site, but haven't heard anything. Are there others who still live in G'boro that we could call to invite?

09/29/08 08:14 AM #30

Randy Melton

I have phone contact with both Randy Simmonds and Richard Jarrett, but I don't know if either has internet (but I'll try to get them to the reunion). I also e-mailed Jeff Kronkoski and left messages through classmates.com for Kathy Vidler (Leonard), Bobbi Monti (Knicely), Kandie Barham (Brogdon), Lawrence Hockett & William Burke (Peanut). So far only Peanut has read the message but I haven't gotten an answer from him.

I also sent several messages through the Grimsley site to Donna Hough, Patti Gray and Eleanor Smith, but so far they haven't responded. It would be nice to find more people, but at this point I don't know what else to do. If any of you have a little extra time maybe you could pick one or two people you were close to back then and try a google search. It's a long shot but you never know...

09/29/08 11:38 AM #31

Terry Williams

I'm really surprised that there hasn't been any contact from Mary Beth Allen, Georgia Wilson, or Betty Sue Everhart. I saw that Betty Sue has a profile started but there hasn't been any further updates.

I may try to call Mary Beth's dad and see if I can get a phone number or email address for her.

10/01/08 11:23 AM #32

I just talked to Richard Jarrett and he asked me to set up his profile for him. He plans on coming to the get-together and bringing his wife Janice. Talked to Randy Simmonds also and he and his wife are going to try and make it.

Had lunch with Joey and Gary yesterday and it was great seeing them again. Judging from the conversation yesterday the "reunion" should be very entertaining. :)

10/05/08 11:18 PM #33

Randy Melton

Betty Sue Everhart (Howard) and Mary Beth Allen (Carter) finally showed up on the Grimsley site. I sent them both an invite so hopefully they'll show up here soon.

Thanks for posting pictures, Carol... you look mahvalous!

10/19/08 11:27 AM #34

Carol Mabe (Batchelor)

Thanks for the props, Randy. It doesn't hurt to surround yourself with younger, attractive gals either - hoping to get some rub-off!! I am really excited to see more people joining in. Hey Terry, do you remember teaching me to drive a straight in your Volkswagon? You had the patience of Jobe... Oh yea, do any of you remember Steve Lane? He's a rep in my territory and this week we got to talking and he grew up in Gboro, lived in Hamilton Lakes, went to Lindley 7th grade (he's a year ahead of us)then Kiser. Graduated from GHS in '77 But...he was best friends with Louie Phillips who lived on Lindell Rd, two blocks from me and he said he had the biggest crush on Donna Hough! See you all next weekend!

10/20/08 07:20 PM #35

Mary Nichols (Diaz)

Hi Randy and all the rest of you! I think I am going to make it to the reunion! I am so excited! My plan is to come to GSO to mom's on Saturday afternoon. Then I will come by for a while on Sundasy to your house Randy. I will bring some sort of an appetizer and a beverage or two for the crowd. I cannot stay long, as i will ahve to get back to CLT to prepare for another week of my school kids and my own kids. But I could not let this opportunity pass by without at least seeing some of you. So, if you are planning to arrive late, don't, cause that will mean that I will not get to see you! I'm looking forward to Sunday. Thanks, Randy and Gigi, for having us!

10/21/08 09:19 AM #36

Randy Melton

Hey Mary... glad you're going to make it after all. Too bad we all can't walk over to Mayberry and have a hot dog and a sundae, but the dairy is rapidly becoming a large pile of bricks. I miss the old Boar & Castle, too. *sniff*

Gigi's making her famous crock pot meatballs (quite tasty) for an appetizer. I'll make sure to leave some open space in the downstairs fridge for whatever you guys are bringing, and we have some extra coolers we can ice up if we run short of space. I think we'll have plenty of sodas and beer for everyone, so don't go nuts! :)

10/23/08 10:49 AM #37

Becky Gugelman (Haynes)

Hi all! I just want to say that I hope you have a wonderful time Sunday catching up with each other and reminiscing of those Lindley days all those 33 years ago! I truly wish I could join you all! Hopefully, there will be a "next time"! Love, Becky:)
