GREENSBORO —Mr. Nathaniel R. Gardner, Sr. departed this earthly life on June 10, 2010 after a long illness. His wife of 60 years, Martha R. Gardner passed away on March 16, 2010.
He was known as "Nat" Gardner, born in Thomasville, GA in 1925. He was the fifth child of six surviving brothers and sisters into their adult life. A close family who lived up and down the eastern U.S., their ages ranged some 17 years from youngest to oldest.
He became an All-State football wide receiver for Douglass High School in Thomasville, GA from 1940-43, where his oldest sister (Minnie) taught English. He once played on the same team with his older brother, David, who was then quarterback. He then went to Alabama State on football scholarship, but was drafted into World War II during the first year.
Nat served in the U.S. Army from April 1943 to February 1946, with some battle campaign in northern France. He received an honorable discharge, then went to N.C. A&T University in 1946 where he would meet his wife-to-be, the former Martha Cardell Rue of Goldsboro.
After finishing N.C.A&T and getting married, he began teaching algebra at Brown Summit High School. While there, he also enjoyed coaching the men's and women's basketball teams from the mid-1950s to 1962. He continued his teaching career in Greensboro at Lincoln Junior High from 1962 to the mid-1970s; and Lindley Junior High, from mid-1970s to around 1982. In 1982 he continued teaching algebra at Smith High School from 1982 to around 1990. He received several student affairs' Human Relations Awards through the 1980s, and a recognition of his service to the mathematics department at Smith High School, before his first retirement around 1989. He continued substitute teaching, until his final retirement in 1995.
Nat Gardner loved teaching math to kids. He loved gardening, travel, close friendship with family, the continued friendship from some of the students through the years from Brown Summit, fellow teachers, and neighbors. He became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity in 1982 where he enjoyed hosting a table for friends at their annual dance. He loved his walks and his freedom. He was a member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Methodist Church. He leaves, as the last of his siblings who have all departed in the past 12 years.
He leaves son, N. Rhodes Gardner previously of California, now in Chester, VA. He leaves sister-in-Law, Rachelle Richardson of Smithfield; brother-in-Law, Alonzo Rue Jr. (Claudette, wife) of Denver, CO; seven nieces and one nephew.
He is preceded in death by sister-in-Law, Ethel Mae White of Goldsboro, and nephew Frank Callender of New York, NY; siblings, Minnie Lee G. Smith of Thomasville, GA; Rose G. Pinkney of Philadelphia, PA; Rita G. Callender of New York, NY; David Edward Gardner and Alfred LeRoy Gardner of Atlanta, GA. "Be with God, and all loved ones. Love, & Peace" (John 14:2).

Donald L. Stowe Sr.


GREENSBORO — Donald L. Stowe, Sr., passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2009.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 13 at Centenary United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Westminster Gardens.
Donald was a native of Belmont, the son of Marvin and Moena Stowe. He was a veteran of the US Coast Guard serving during World War II. He graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1952 and earned a Master in Education degree from UNCG in 1966. He began his teaching and coaching career in Lowell. After three years, he moved to Tabor City and then accepted a teaching position at Gibsonville High School in 1954. Page High School hired him as a teacher and athletic coach the first year they opened in 1958. Donald spent twelve years at Page and served as assistant principal for his last four years. He then spent the next twelve years as principal of Lindley and Gillespie Jr. High Schools. After 31 years in the public school system he taught at GTCC for twelve years.
Mr. Stowe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Madge Roseman Stowe, sons, Donald Stowe, Jr. and wife, Nina, Geoffrey Stowe, grandchildren; Donald L. Stowe, III, Walter R. Stowe, Jacob Stowe, Jaime Stowe, Jeremy Stowe and three great-grandchildren.

SUMMERFIELD — Herbert Vance Pegram, 84, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2009.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, at Summerfield United Methodist Church, 2334 Scalesville Road, Summerfield, N.C., with the Rev. Kelley G. Groce officiating.
Mr. Pegram's body will lie in state one hour prior to the service, and a reception will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
Mr. Pegram was born September 23, 1925, to Romas Clyde and Bessie Mae Phillips Pegram in Summerfield, North Carolina. He was a retired teacher, having taught school in the Guilford County and Greensboro City schools for 40 years. Mr. Pegram received his undergraduate degree from High Point College and his master's degree from the University of North Carolina. He participated in post-graduate studies in the earth sciences and geography at the University of Virginia, and earth and space science at Cornell University in a three-summer sequential program.
Having been a student and teacher of the earth sciences, he felt the destruction of our earth's vegetation was having a serious effect on the pattern and amount of rainfall on our state and nation. An avid environmentalist, Mr. Pegram was a member of the Piedmont Land Conservancy and firmly believed in the preservation of soil, water, and forest resources.
Mr. Pegram had been a licensed aviator since April 1947, and served on the Guilford County Board of Education from 1970 to 1982.
For many years, Mr. Pegram was an active member of Summerfield United Methodist Church in Summerfield, North Carolina, where he enjoyed serving in the church choir and teaching Sunday School throughout much of his adult life. He was a devout Christian and very deeply loved the Lord.
Mr. Pegram was a veteran of World War II, and served two years in the Pacific theatre of operations, which included Oahu, Hawaii, Christmas Island, and Okinawa. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7999, and was chaplain of the post.
Mr. Pegram was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Edna Glenn Huffine Pegram.
He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia LeAnn Pegram of Winston-Salem; a sister, Jacquelyn Faith Pegram, of Summerfield; special nieces and nephews, and his dear friend and companion, Annie Kate Cox.
