Judy Maxwell (1971)

Yes that is Ms. Bibee and Mr. Wilbanks ~

I have yet to meet or talk to a person that did not admire Ms. Bibee and I am one of those. She was a great teacher and a good person!. We went on a couple of field trips to the art musuem we stopped for ice cream on the way back, We also had an art service club party one year at Mike Mannings house and we had to make our costumes (Halloween) to wear to the party, She judged who had the best costume. Wish I had some of the pictures still from that party.

Mr. Wilbanks as far as some of you guys are concerned was not the best due to the swats you have gotten from him but he was liked enough that in 1970 they were taking him from Sam and transferring him to some other school because they were getting ready to start busing over the ones from others schools. We had a walk out and and a sit in on the front lawn in protest ~ We chanted we want Wilbanks ~ the Chronlcle came out and we were the front page story!  Aww the good ole days!

Diana #2954 ~ Yes I was glad to hear Mr. Sylvester was ok ~ I will post an up date on him when I find out more. He is a very nice man and I sure did enjoy the five years that I got to visit with him while working at the Church, He came in every Tuesday before going to read to the second graders and he was very involved with the Church.

Kerry #2955 ~ I don't remember a Judy Bird ~ we must have worked there at different times. I think there was only the one named Commercial State Bank it was located at the corner of Tidwell and Jensen ~ after I left there they moved to Hwy 59 and Tidwell and have since become a Wells Fargo Bank. I worked there from around 74 till 77. I first worked in bookkeeping/customer service then moved into the Proof dept. It was not that big of a bank so I would be in hopes of remembering another Judy, I became friends with Gwen Perry while working there and we later became room mates and are still in touch with each other now. I will have to ask if she remebers the Name.

#2957. Judy Maxwell.....thanks so much...I thought that was Ms Bibee.  I did not have her for a teacher but she was a very nice person and I knew others that were in her art class and she was very highly respected.  Did not know Mr. Wilbanks...he must have came to SHHS after I left in 1963.

Buddy Vassar,  i didn't get any swats from Wilbanks, but one day at lunch time, i had walked over to "Roy's Superette” the little convienent store for a Dr. Pepper and a bag of Fritos , (the cornerstone of a nutritious lunch, lol)   As I came back across Tidwell, he was walking out of the Drama dept outside doors, busted me, and gave me some afternoon detention for my laps in judgement.  I said to him, "Hey, i'm coming back to school, not walking away from it!"  He didn't appreciate my  sarcastic humor! lol

Ms. Bibee attended one of our class reunions about 20 years ago.  She was amazing, she looked younger than a lot of the students.  I asked her about Jeanie Blankenship, who was my homeroom teacher.  She informed me that Ms. Blankenship had left the educational field and went into commercial art.

Yeap I think his first name was Kenneth but we all called him MR. Willbanks! He got me once and I never let him catch me again. That guy could swing a powerful board for sure.

Roger

I know his son works there also ~ as does the Mom (wife) I still eat there when in Houston so I too hope it stays open. I think it will snce the son has worked there for years too.

Sad for the family! I will try and find out the funeral arrangements ~ there are so many of us that still go there I for one would like to pay my respects to the family.

Glenna Chandler (Banano) (1969)

Two comments: I grew up with Big Burger V. Loved the food and I loved Nick. I called in so many orders to pick up, Nick recognized my voice. Lol. Next comment: I know what Buddy Vassar is talking about with the north side. We sold my parents house in 2007 and I still think about it daily. We had a vacant lot on the corner of Clark and Soren where we played baseball and I had the only basketball goal around, so everyone in the neighborhood shot baskets there. I loved DeChaumes, Fonville, and Sam Houston. During the summer I would go over to Fonville and swim. I look at my grandsons now and can only hope they have the kind of memories most of us had, but somehow I don't think they will.

Buddy #2966 !

Wow! I was shocked by your post. I guess I'm more like you than your wife ~ I too love to go into the old neighborhoods ~ what's left of some and see the improvments that have happened to others.

I grew up off 59 and Jensen and I still drive down that way when in Houston, (Our street Lakewood has had many of the houses bought out by flood control and town down, ours included) My sister bought her house off Irvington and Crosstimbers prior to 1975 and she still lives there. Walking distance of Sam Houston ~ I come to Houston and see her twice a month. I still like to take a drive down Jensen and Laura Koppe area and see how it has changed. We had a neighborhood reunion last summer on Lakewood and serveral of us were there. We are planning another one this year (Pinewood Village) Gravesites we grew up going to all the old graves that were relatives and some that were not.

What area did she grow up in?

Tell her not to be afraid and to get out and enjoy the old neighborhoods with you!

I guess Bubby deleted his post that was 2966 so I will comment on the current 2966~

Glenna ~ we also loved Big Burger V and Nick, I have a link to his services I will add on to here ~ I live out of town and still work so will not be able to be at the morning service but am going to try and make the 6:30 evening Trisagoin service.

His funeral like so many we have been to will be at Brookside at 59 and Lauder (grew up going to funerals there and feeding the ducks there too)

Nikolaos was the 8th of ten children of Evagelia Roussos and Andreas Vionis. He was born in Paros, Greece. At the age of 11, the family moved to Athens, where Nikolaos (Niko) finish the elementary. He started working at the age of thirteen at a print shop and at night he was going to high school. He loved to play soccer. He enlisted in the Greek Coast Guard. He worked as a carpenter. He worked at his brother Steve's Greek restaurant, Athens Bar and Grill, for a couple of years. After that he worked at Star Furniture, he was very good at his job. For a few months he did construction and put up sheet tracks. Finally, on July 16, 1973, he opened his own business, a drive in restaurant Big Burger V.

July 16, 1975 He married in Greece and brought his wife Ekaterni Draganigou to Houston, and they had a son named Andreas.

Nick loved to go fishing and hunting with his brother, brother n law, friends, and family. He was preceded in death by his father Andreas, mother Evagelia, brother Steve, Kiostas; sister, Pantelia, Xanthe, and Despina. He survived by his wife Ekaterini, son Andreas, daughter in law Nancy and his grandchildren Anna-Marina and Niko. Also he survived by his brother Anastasios and wife Eleni, Bobby and his wife Stavroula, Panos and his wife Dina, and his sister Daphne. My family owned the Dairy Cone prior to Nick buying it in 1973.  He was always nice to me when I found my way back to Houston for a visit or reunion.  He even adopted my cat because I was in college and not able to have her with me.  I am very sad to hear of his death and will keep his family in my prayers.  I know he will be missed!

#2956 - Judy, I remember the protest to keep Mr. Wilbanks so well.  My mom was not happy with me because the TV news was there and she saw me on the news.  I was trying to get a scholarship to Houston Baptist University and she did not think that would help my case.  As it turned out, I decided not to go to HBU.  As protestors, we were mild compared to what we are seeing today.

#2964 I enjoy driving around the old neighborhood when I come to Houston.  I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but about four years ago I was traveling with my job to Houston - in fact, I spent probably 30% of my time in Houston that year.  I lived on Denslow Circle, 3 blocks up Cravens from the SHHS.  I took pics of my old house.  Whoever lived there had done some awesome work on the house and yard.  Loved it.  I often think about how we grew up there and what a great time we had in school.  Debra Kratochvil (now Sullivan) and I were great friends from the time we were 15, and we still are.  She lives outside of Fort Worth and we still talk on the phone at least 3-4 times a week.  Her mom still lives on Dipping Lane, and so did my aunt and uncle for a long time.

Judy Maxwell  post-2966 I think. I don't think that a walk from Crosstimbers at Irvington would be a short walk to Sam Houston. I did jog from Firnat at Irvington to Post at Helmer's wich is 2 blocks south of Crosstimbers and back 3 or  times a week when I was boxing for Art Zarbock at Airline Boxing Club.

Glenna stated "I had the only basketball goal around, so everyone in the neighborhood shot baskets there."

I (Paula Kilpatrick) lived at 226 Robmore just around the corner from Clark and Soren.  We also had a basketball backboard and a concrete double wide driveway.  The Ryders, The Kaisers, The Youngs, The Reeds, and alot more kids came over to play basketball and then we also played for hours on the Back Lot on Tallant St. right behind our house.   My parents owned the lot.  Baseball, bike races, gocarts, minibikes, pony rides and alot more.  Great times on the  Back Lot!

Paula, I wish my grandkids had as much fun as we did in the good old days.know exactly where you lived. We walked down Robmore to go to the pharmacy at the corner of Robmore and Bauman.

To Paula Kilpatrick

You are not going to believe this.  For years, I dated the man that currently owns your old house at 226 Robmore.  He is now a retired Houston Police Officer (narcotic department).  And his brother, also, a retired Houston Police Officer now lives in the house.  A previous owner added on to the back - one room - behind the kitchen to the back bedroom.  One of our floods ruined the hardwood floors, so he poured concrete over the floors and tiled the entire house.  Oh, and he added a small bathroom to the back bedroom.  There is what looks like a one car garage made into a laundry and storage room right beside the kitchen.  Everything was remodeled before his brother moved in.  And, the brother has lived in the house for the last 10-15 years.  It is indeed a small world.
