I'm with Rex.  While the number of respondents echoes the wonderful enthusiasm by many to attend, it seems to be dominating the board with "me too".  Hardly anything else has been posted in the last couple of weeks.

It appears that Judy Maxwell has, by default, become the lead on the tour.  I'm grateful that she seems to be willing to take on the responsibility of taking people's names to let them know directly of the plans and schedule.  But let's take some of the load off her by not depending on her to contact you directly about the tour.  She can post the schedule or changes in the schedule right here.  It's up to you to watch the board periodically to keep informed.  I think Judy has already received enough confirmations to attend to make definite plans.  And there doesn't seem to be a problem with the crowd being large even if you choose to go at the last moment.  If you told Judy you are attending, please keep your promise.  It would be terrible after all her effort that only a handful shows up.  But I don't think that's going to happen.  You ol' Tigers sound pretty jazzed about this tour.

So what should we discuss other than the Tour?  How about some comments or information about why there was a decision to drop the "Sam" off of our school's name.  It wasn't because Sam Houston was a slave owner or fought for the Confederacy.  Is the school a special educational project or effort on behalf of the Houston Independent School District (if it's still called that today)?  So the name Houston reflects a civic project rather than honor an individual?  Or is it to square things with folks in the area pissed off because the name Jeff Davis was dropped.  ("See we're not naming schools after people anymore.")  Does anyone know the answer?

How about the school yearbook (CoLoNeh) and the school newspaper (The Aegis)?  Did those entities continue for many years up to recently?  Or did they cease at some point?  What became of The Houstonettes?   I saw that the school attempted to maintain a website at one point.  Does that still exist?  ROTC?  FFA?

Mel....you are right about the school tour....Judy should be able to post the tour time well in advance so everyone can make arrangements to go. The changes to shhs happened way after all of us left....having a business near the school for thirty plus years I bought ads in the Aegis paper....they sure needed mrs. Barton to show them how a paper operates....now I know how the media now is a joke with news....I took the Saturday tour in June during our reunion and had mixed feelings about the demise of shhs...our school taught everyone of us respect, courtesy, integrity, pride and to be the best in our endeavors after graduation...when we all take the final tour and get a brick or some other momento Sam Houston High School will leave with us .....in memories of a special place for us....changing to a new name will not produce a better product...God bless...John Huettel '68.

Mel, while there are not many of your questions that I can answer and can tell you that the Houstonettes evolved into a dance team called the Tigerettes.  Probably showing my age here, but I much preferred the Drum and Bugle Corps to a dance team -- much classier!

To all, Listen to Mel, I went to school with him. He is the second smartest person I know, just behind my wife who knows everything. I think it is a shame the School board is renaming schools.  Soon they will be like schools in New York. Just call them PS # 34.  You can then proudly say you  graduated from PS# 34. What an honor.

So was this dance team, The Tigrettes, a version of the Laker Girls?  I can't imagine that there could be anywhere near the number of people on a dance team as there was in The Houstonettes.  That's a shame because I always thought having The Houstonettes was a wonderful thing for the ladies.  It provided an organization for structure and bonding that doesn't exist on a large scale for women in high school.  It was definitely something of which to be proud.  But, like anything that nature, I'm sure it created cliques that were resented.  Every now and then we'll see a post by someone who rails against any nostalgism about high school or the idea of a reunion since they were pretty much left out of everything.  I'll be honest.  I didn't even give it a second thought that we needed to try harder to be more inclusive.  I thought it was up to the individual to become as involved as they chose. It didn't cross my mind that some people couldn't participate because of finances or personalities.  I thought we were all poor on the North Side.  Obviously, I was seriously wrong.  As Jack Nicholson says in the movie A Few Good Men, "Don't I feel like the f...g asshole."

Mel:  (Post #3795)

I probably should not be responding to your post regarding the school dropping the name “Sam”, because my mental capabilities get weaker every day.  However, if I recall correctly, the assistant principal that talked to us about the future plans for Sam Houston High School alluded to some law that had been passed that, either stated that this must be done; or that it allowed them to remove the “Sam” from the High School’s name.  Maybe those of you who were on the tour of SHHS in June could chime in, and give more accurate information.  It is a very sad day for our alma matter.

Well its sad to know ... "THOSE PEEPS" are trying to change history and take away anything that has meaning to it ...
NEXT they will want to take down the 'Sam Houston statue' in Huntsville......
We can't re-write history .....it is what it is and proudl of our heritage ..don't why they can't leave things alone ...change names / streets / building / flags .......its just plain redicilous !!!! .jmo

As always my friend Mel is correct.  I thought we were all poor also.  We thought everyone who went to Lamar or Bellaire were the Rich ones.  Janice also it was just to funny to pass up on your triple comment. Once you post on here you become fair game.  I have taken my share of flak on here.

Questions about the continuation of the Aegis and CoLonNeh...I don't know about the yearbook, but The Aegis was the oldest high school newspaper in the state of Texas, established 1889, and I was proud to be editor in my senior year, 1971-1972. I looked on the current school website and the last issues I can find posted were from 2017. By the way, our sponsor, Ms. Nancy Barton, passed away in June 2016 in Kerrville and was buried in her childhood hometown of Comanche, Texas. She was 92. I passed through Comanche--rather deliberately--last summer on my way home from a niece's wedding in Colorado. I went by the cemetery, but could not find her grave. I would have liked to have left her some flowers. She was the teacher who had the greatest impact on my life, for sure.

The comment above about dropping the name Sam brought back amemory that the name used to be Houston High School, but was later changed to Sam Houston. A bit of Internet searching just now turned up lots of historical facts that I hadn’t known.

The school has had seven different names, and two different locations.

And, "Sam Houston has Texas' oldest high school newspaper, the Aegis, started in 1889. In addition, the world's first girls' Military Drill Squad (formerly known as the Black Battalion, but now called the Tigerettes) originated at the school.”

Thanks for all requests to be notifiled.......Just stay tuned here on this site and you will see the info as soon as I get it. I will post it several times and make sure everyone knows.....If you are interested in going just keep a look out here and you will see the information. Ther is no limit to how many can go and No charge for the ones asking that..

Thanks to you guys for backing me up with the requests.......I don't mind helping out where ever it's needed.

Yes the name of the school use to be Houston High School and was changed when it was moved out to Irvington from Downtown If I remember correctly.

I hope they don't try and take down the Statue in Huntsville. I love it and the past history it represents. Your right history can't be changed but some are sure trying to.

The school has changed since we all went there the whole structure and name were changed several years ago when it was then called Sam Houston Math and Science Tech. They geared it up more like YES PREP from what I can tell. Which is to get the kids ready for college. Although a friend of mine sent their daughter to YES PREP and found out while she was tthere that most of the extra classes offered that intice people to go there were not offered. The 4 years she went there they would tell them it will be offered next year and never was.

I guess all we can do is hope for the best for the kids and grand kids or even great grand kids that will attending any school to get a good ecucation.

I think us tigers and the the ones that are the years that get on here were not only proud of our school but was raised to show pride in what we do and to be respectful, Now a days most of the kids don't seem to get the kind of rearing we got. and that is a shame. I never had children due to cancer in my 20's but I sometimes think my generation that had kids is where it all started to change. For some reason the ones that would be our kids seemed to have raided their children different. I am not talking about all kids but that is where it started in my opinion. All we can do is try and keep the schools educating but with this NEW MATH it makes me wonder.  Do you understand why they are teching it that was and do you understand it...I sure don't

All for now.....Have a great evening!!

Again thanks to all of you who post on here...

Judy
