Elaine Rice (Hewitt) (1970)

I just wanted to let y'all know that my brother in law Danny Edwards passed away 6/4/22.He went to Reagan high but his wife of 41 years was a 61 graduate of Sam Houston, Lana Marie Hewitt Edwards. She was Houstonette Major 60-61. Danny was an attorney, judge and too many things to mention, but most of all he was a wonderful Christian man and husband, father, grandfather and brother in law. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

It was very sad to hear about Robert’s passing.  I also had several classes with him at UofH  back in the early 70’.  Got to catch up with him  at the 45th reunion and it seems he had a great career and life.  This was too soon.

Deborah Quinn (Hensel) (1972)

The Class of '72 will hold its 50-year reunion on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Odin Hall, Knights of Columbus, 607 East Whitney. (It's a block north of Crosstimbers and a block west of Airline Drive on the opposite side of Interstate 45 from Northline Mall.) Reservations are temporarily limited to the class of '72 and their spouses/significant others, but after July 15, we'll determine if we have room capacity for inviting other class years. Reservations can be made before July 15 by mailing a check for $50 per person made out to me, Deborah Quinn Hensel, with "SH 1972" written on the memo line. My mailing address is 7030 Concho, Houston, TX 77074. Or, if you use Zelle, my email address is DQH3591@aol.com. If you have questions, you can use that same email address. In the interest of maintaining an accurate head count for the caterer, THERE WILL BE NO TICKETS SOLD AT THE DOOR, which will open at 6:30 p.m.

I am very pleased to be able to announce that the 50-year class reunion celebration for the 1972 graduates will now be open to other class years. Come party with us! We will be celebrating Saturday, October 1, 2022 at the Knights of Columbus' Odin Hall, 607 E. Whitney from about 6:30 to 10:30. There will be dinner and dancing and a deejay, but please dress comfortably, not formally or even semi-formally.

Tickets are $50 a person and will not be available at the door. You may send a check to me: Deborah Hensel, 7030 Concho, Houston, Texas, 77074. Or you may use Zelle or Venmo. The Venmo account is Deborah-Hensel-1 and has a tiger as the profile picture. My email address is DQH3591@aol.com and my phone number is 832-372-5383. (If you are using Zelle, don't be surprised if the name pops up as Frederick Hensel, my husband.)

Marilyn Maniscalco (Henley) (1965)

Michael C. Henley, Class of 1958, passed away suddenly on Sunday afternoon, August 7, 2022 at his home in Temple, TX. Mike is the brother of my husband, Arthur Henley, (1965 class). Their other siblings, also graduates of Sam Houston, are Pam Henley Crockett, Class of 1961, Arleigh Kay Henley, Class of 1968 and Donna Henley Provence, Class of 1970. He was married to Ann Reece (class of 1961 who passed away in 1995).

Surviving him are his wife Clysta, his daughter Cathey Ann O'Banion, granddaughter Adrian Bollinger and grandson Conell Osborne and great granddaughter Mercedes Bollinger. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and a cousin Melody Hammett.

Mike was intelligent, witty and had a positive attitude in spite of some medical issues over many years. The Henley siblings were close and they will miss him very much.

Posted on Sam Houston fallen Tigers by Shirley Culpepper Brook ~ It is with great sadness that I along with my siblings Kathy Culpepper Gunderson (1968), and Tom Culpepper (1974) announce the loss of our brother John Ralph Culpepper, class of 1972.
John Ralph Culpepper passed from this earthly life into eternal glory with his Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, September 2, 2022, in Waco, Texas. He was born in Houston, Texas one of five children on January 20, 1954, to Katherine Karleen Rotan and Willie Caton Culpepper.
John met his wife Barbara through an introduction in 1972 and were married July 7, 1973, maintaining a lasting marriage of 49 years. During this time, they welcomed two children, Matthew and Caitlin. John worked as a structural steel detailer throughout his career all while raising a family and being the first person in his family to receive a bachelor’s degree in 1992 from The University of Texas.
John and family joined his parents in their retirement home of Centerville, Texas in 1996 where they assisted in the operation of the family business, Culpepper Christmas Tree Farm. John was a member of the Chapel of the Hills Church where he was involved with the youth group and their activities.

John was an excellent whistler who enjoyed racquetball, archery, camping, riding his motorcycle, serving the community through his church, spending quality time with his family and bragging to fellow church members and friends about his beloved grandchildren.

Waiting to greet John were his beloved parents, sister Barbara Kirkley, nephew Randall Scott Henderson, niece Kelly Culpepper, great niece Jazzmin Walker and many friends.
May be an image of 1 person and standing
John leaves behind a loving family, his wife Barbara of Centerville, TX; his son, Matthew, and wife Cami of Albuquerque, NM and daughter, Caitlin of Centerville, TX as well as much adored group of grandchildren - Molly and Eli Culpepper of Albuquerque, NM and Laney Culpepper of Centerville, TX. He will also be missed by his caring siblings Kathy Gunderson and husband Rex of Spring, TX, Shirley Brook and husband Gilbert of Florence, TX, and Tom Culpepper and wife Shonah of Houston, TX along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends.
The family requests flowers be sent to Chapel of the Hills Church or donations be sent to a charity of your choice in memory of John.

Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday September 17, 2022, at 1 PM, at Chapel of the Hills Assembly of God Church (712 SE Frontage Rd Interstate 45, Centerville, TX 75833). Pastor Gary Stutz officiating. The family has entrusted the cremation care of their loved one to a Cremation of Waco, TX. Honorary Pall Bearers include Gilbert Brook, Rex Gunderson, Curtis Hensley, Brant Henderson, Chad Henderson, Troy Bradshaw, Ryan McCleney and Jared McCleney.

Steven Shepherd (1970)

Good morning all! Sorry that I have appeared to have dropped off the face of the earth, but ever since COVID hit, Ive been as busy as a one armed paper hanger in a wind storm. With my pastoral work, Veteran's activities, and teaching Driver's Safety Classes for AARP, I rarely stop for long!

If you are ever in the west central area of Arkansas, stop in for a visit. I normally have a pot of coffee on and we are able to see Mt Magazine from our back porch. We are about 50 miles east of Fort Smith. I need to make a trip to Hot Springs and visit a neighbor from E. Parker Rd, Not ignoring you Cynthia. I think we both have a lot on our plate.

Judy Maxwell, I thought I posted this but not showing so I will repost. Thanks for coming to my brother John's service. It meant a lot to his wife and children. Also to the family. You are very thoughtful.

Also, my sister said there were almost 70 posts on Facebook from Alumni and we are grateful. It really is wonderful to have remembrances for a loved one. I'm no longer on Facebook but my sister keeps me informed. Thanks to all.
