Here's another song to lighten the mood. By Smythe And Taylor, a Houston duo.

"I've spent all my lifetime collecting all this stuff, so I'm taking it with me when I go."

I was pleased to see a lot of people yesterday at the dedication of the Vietnam monument. I had previously posted that I'd be there wearing my Proud Sister of a Vietnam Veteran shirt and was pleasantly surprised when a gentleman walked over to me and said, "Are you Judy?" I didn't recognize him, but it only took about 2 seconds for me to remember about my post here and realize this was a Vietnam veteran from Sam Houston who saw it. Bryan Rasco, it was an honor to meet you. Thank you for your service.

I wish I had been at the dedication of the Vietnam Memorial. Thanks to all the brave men and women for their service to their country. God Bless America.

Darryl Yorek and I are "neighbors." Daryl is the Orthodonist here on Vashon Island. Whenever we run into each other at our favorite coffee shop we talk about our days at Sam Houston, and working together on the staff of the school paper, the Aegis. Daryl was the paper's photographer and I was a feature and editorial writer. Our amazement never dims at the fact we both wound up on an island in the middle of Puget Sound, 2500 miles from "Home!" Daryl, I'm sorry to hear about Frank's passing.

MARY LAYTON-TAYLOR OBITUARY

Mary Lea Layton-Taylor
12/25/1923 - 11/08/2022
It is with great sadness that the friends of Mary Lea Layton-Taylor announce her homegoing on November 8, 2022.
Mary Lea faithfully served her Savior, Jesus Christ, and the Humble community for 90+ years. Mary Lea was born to Robert Monroe Layton & Mary Lillian Brown on December 25, 1923, at the very site where she lived until her death. Mary Lea had one brother, Robert Monroe Layton, who preceded her in death in 1953. Mary Lea attended elementary, junior high and high school in Humble and graduated from Charles Bender High School in 1941. She went on to graduate from Baylor University in 1945 and returned to Humble to begin her teaching career that spanned 37 years. Mary Lea taught in the Humble Independent School District from 1945-1953. In 1953, Mary Lea left Humble ISD and journeyed south on Highway 59 where she taught the remainder of her career at Scarborough Elementary School teaching 5th & 6th grade until her retirement in 1982. After her retirement Mary Lea traveled extensively with friends. On January 18, 1990, Mary Lea married her long-time friend, Jack S. Taylor and together they enjoyed traveling and entertaining friends and family.
Mary Lea served the Humble community in many capacities including the James Tull Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution where she was a charter member. She served on the board of the Humble Museum, was a member of Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls. Mary Lea has been a lifelong member of United City Church (formerly First Baptist Church Humble). In 1990, Mary Lea was appointed to the Northeast Hospital Board of Authority and faithfully served in several different capacities until her retirement in January 2019. Mary Lea was recently named Grand Marshal for the 2022 Christmas Parade of Lights in Humble.
Mary Lea was a renowned historian knowing much of Humble's history. She was an integral part in the publication of the Humble History book published in the Bi-Centennial year. She loved to regale "interesting tidbits" of the history of Humble to friends and anyone who would listen.
Mary Lea was preceded in death by her grandparents, George Buckner Brown and Mary Brown, her parents, Robert Monroe and Mary Lillian Layton, her brother, Robert Monroe Layton, Jr, husband, Jack Sullivan Taylor, and her beloved niece, Virginia Lea Layton.
Mary Lea will be remembered for her infectious laugh, her willingness to help others who needed a helping hand, her service to her community and her love for her many pets over the years.
Mary Lea would like to thank her special caregivers, Gertrude Washington, Jennifer Nixon, and Karen Stephens for their faithful and loving care over the past three years.
A celebration of Mary Lea's life will be held at Rosewood Funeral Home, 2602 S. Houston Avenue, Humble, Texas on Monday, November 14, 2022. Visitation will be at 1:00 pm with the service following at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Rosewood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United City Church (formerly First Baptist Church Humble) Missions or to the charity of your choice.

Judy, I had no idea Miss Layton was still living. I remember her more than fondly as one of my best Teachers. I was in her 5th grade class at Scarborough Elementary. She was a fun and caring teacher who instilled in me a love of learning. Rest in peace.

I also remember Mrs. Layton, I had Mr. Ellison next door for sixth grade. She hasn't changed much from those days. RIP

Thomas I had Mr Ellison also for 6th grade. Always got his cornbread in buttermilk as his afternoon snack from the cafeteria.

About that time  I had Mr Zimmerman for 6th grade, do not remember Mrs Layton.

Rex, I didn't know of Mr. Zimmerman either. 7 years must have been a lifetime in teacher years. God bless them all. Not an easy task corraling Elementary children. Ha! I guess easier than highschoolers though.

I'm so sorry to hear of Ms.Layton death. I was very surprised to learn she was still living. I'm a 1964 graduate from Sam. I see from other posts of others that had Ms. Layton in the fifth grade at Scarborough Elementary. I too had her in the fifth grade. I also had Ms.Hare in fourth grade and Mr. Ellison in the sixth grade. Prior to my entering fourth grade we lived in Humble Tx and for several years we lived across the street from Ms. Hare and Ms. Layton live diagonally across from from our house.  Since I knew them, knew they were teachers in Houston but don't know that I knew they were teachers at Scarborough, I'm sure this made my transition from the Humble school to Houston much smoother. My younger sister also had both teachers. Rest In Peace Ms. Layton, you will always be fondly remembered.

I didnt realize that Mrs. Layton and Miss Hare were neighbors in Humble. I seem to remember that in the late 1960's Miss Hare and Mr. Ellison tied the knot. I wonder if Mrs. Layton could have been the matchmaker.

Gary Spessard, Hello. It's been many years since our Beneke Methodist days. I checked out SpessArt (nice play on words). Loved it all. Especially Christ's reflection and Normandy. Very moving.

Gary Spessard,

Ms. Bibee was my favorite teacher. I even gave up taking typing so I could fit in her commercial art class. I spent many an hour in her room; before, during, and after school. Her training has helped with my hobby of woodworking..

Everyone really loved Miss Bibee.  I've never heard a negative comments, EVER.  I only had her one semester, her Advanced Art class, fall of '72.  Last I heard anything, she had married, and was living in Montrose somewhere.  Probably to be close to her beloved "Texas Art Supply" shop.  She had sent us there, to pick up our sketch books, which i have managed to save a couple of pages.    She is in so many SHHS yearbook over the years from the 50s to the 70s (that are on classmates dot com), and she hardly changed any at all!

Gary Spessard, I don't know if you remember me but we lived next door to you on Briarwick St. I am the same age as your brother Robert.  Robert and I went to school together at Scarborough, Fonville and graduated from Sam in 64 together. I haven't heard anything about you or your family in many years. Your Mom and Dad moved to Spring a year or two after my wife and I. We were actually neighbors again for several years until they moved. I heard soon after that they both had passed away. Is Robert still living and if so is he in the Houston area. Good to hear from you.
