Bill: we terrorized the neighborhood did'nt we? I guess we wer'nt all that bad tho as far as bad goes...have you been back to "K" highway lately...one cattle rancher owns the whole darn country now...

Bill Groff snuck out of school? You were a bad influence ...only you could get him to do that probably!

Oh yes - I do remember the ski outing. Our family would go skiing every Sunday after church in the summer. I thought it was cool that I got to meet the "new guy" before anyone else in our class. You were probably scared to death moving into such a small community where everyone knows everyone, but your family fit in great. Where is the rest of your family located now?

I'll quit hogging the web after this one- I have to share the story of my first official school "whoopin". In eighth grade Coach Stogsdill was teaching us Science and we were being rowdy. Coach threw a piece of chalk at someone and then turned around and began teaching with another piece of chalk. We were all petrified - except Jeff. Jeff picked up the thrown piece of chalk and threw it back at Stogsdill (his back turned to us of course). Coach turned around, veins bursting from his neck, red as an apple, and screamed, "who did that?"! Jeff immediately pointed at me. I was summoned to the hallway where I received the beating of my life! My ass is still flat! When I came back to the classroom Jeff had the most snug smile on his face. I still haven't forgiven him!

And I can't believe that Bill Groff snuck out of school either. I was never brave enough to try that. I thought Mr. Kaufman would have never allowed that - he always caught everyone trying to sneak away from school (I thought)

I BLAMED THAT THROWN PIECE OF CHALK ON EARL McDOWELL...
get your story straight...I remember that well cause Stogsdill picked Earl up by the scruff of his neck and penned him against the blackboard...a teacher would be pilleried for doing something like that these days...I probably got you in trouble for somethig else Bill...I remember the sound of that chalk hitting the blackboard still, sounded like a .22 rifle shot...

No, Bill G. and I made it! We did get in trouble upon our return to school the next day!

One last admission - Jeff and I were in town during a total blizzard. The town was a "ghost town" because nobody was stupid enough to be out on the roads. We went to the MFA garage and found a car with keys in it. It started and we went to the school and raised hell all through the yard! Do-Nuts everywhere. I never laughed so hard in my life. After the adventure we parked the car and weaved our way home.

Jeff, you have your story wrong. I have the flat ass to prove it!

03/03/09 05:26 PM #53

Jeff Shackleford

wow! I forgot about the car thing, remember when Mike Nixdorf used to take that old white ford out and smoke the tires on that hill in town below the old academy building, you always got a kick out of that too!!
its a wonder he did'nt blow the back tires on that thing he would just stand on it a smoke things up pretty good...

...And I thought I was the "wild" one. Jackie, you missed out by not going to Tech school senior year. At least once a week a couple of us would hide in the seats when we got to Waynesville and go the coffee shop with "Bussy" and drink coffee. I'm pretty sure Mom & Dad still don't know about that. I am looking so forward to the 14th!

By the way, what is the statute of limitation on some of this stuff were fessin up to? I hope our kids don't have access to this site.

Bussy was quite a guy. He was the best bus driver that we had during school. I think he drove the bus to every event he could. He really liked all the kids. I think I did get in on one of those coffee shop trips my junior year.

I think most of the wild times I was involved with can be traced to one Bill Scott when he moved into our quite little town, (just kidding Bill, we would'nt have been near as educated about life without you, you introduced me to Falstaff beer, remember those bicentennial cans...)

03/04/09 07:20 PM #58

Bill Scott

Jeff - I think you may be right about the chalk throwing incident, but wrong about this one (falstaff). I was an innocent kid from New Jersey. You introduced me to skoal (I have multiple stories about that) and Jim Beam. I was never the same after you warped my brain.

Lori - Weren't you in my driver's ed class? I recall driving to crocker for ice cream during school. I also recall you being a smooth driver. Then I remember riding with you on a Saturday night. Dukes of Hazard!

Unfortunately my driving skils haven't improved much! But I get lots of practice, driving to Jeff City every day.

Does anybody want to try to get together after the banquet? Just let us know and Jackie and I will try figure something out.

I have to play music in Florence that night if anyone knows where that is...(Morgan County)...this was scheduled before I knew about the Alumni event...Jackie I have officially gotten ahold of all of my contacts now...spoke with Darryl McGarity last on my list...he is in Chicago and says he will try to attend on the 14TH, can't wait to see everyone...

Wow, miss a few days and all kinds of rumors can start about you! Admittedly, we did sneak out of school to go camping and fishing. We used the "Mr Merideth" design cooker (a roll of toilet paper stuffed into a coffee can and soaked with alcohol). Didn't burn very long, and we had sushi instead of fried fish. Back in the mid 90's I spent weeks at a time in Japan on business, and the first sushi I had reminded me of that fish we sorta cooked. I still hate sushi. While I was in Japan I did finally find a sport I think I could be good at: Sumo wrestling. I think all I lack now is long enough hair to make a bun! (Remind me to tell you the story of accidentally walking into the hotel room of the eventual world-champion Sumo, Konishki-San. Not knowing Japanese can get you in trouble!)

Jeff & Lori,

Thanks so much for helping make all the phone calls. I hope we have a good turn out for the banquet. I can't wait to see everyone again.

Man, it sure has been quiet on here lately. Must be everyone is getting nervous about the reunion.

I think you're right BS "red power" maybe everyone is busy getting tans and lypo treatments, (just kidding)

03/12/09 04:38 PM #66

actually, I've been busy with basketball here in California, our girls team made it to state playoffs and beat Macon in class 3 who were unbeaten this season...now on to quarterfinals saturday...I'm hoping I get done in time to make it saturday night...I should be ok....Lady Pintos are 25-4 on the season...our boys varsity team had a good season too at 20-8, they got beat in the district finals against Blair Oaks who have become California's biggest rival...

Jackie Fritchey (Luttrell)

During my boys high school years, the Iberia baseball team made it to the state playoffs twice, once in 2001 (taking 1st) and again in 2005 (taking 3rd). That was quite an experience. I can still remember what a bundle of nerves we (the parents) were as we played through districts and quarter finals. That's something everyone should get to experience at least once. I think the whole town of Iberia was in Columbia to watch the games.

I hope you make it to the banquet Jeff, but I certainly understand those games are something you won't want to miss.

I remember seeing the progress of Iberia baseball during those years on Channel 13...I was very proud...

I know I've been working hard trying to get in shape to impress the classmates. I dusted the weights from my basement, but while transferring them to the bedroom I pulled a hami. That's the only reason I'll have a little extra belly on Saturday.
