Larry Holsey (1972)

Sylvia, thanks for the memories. That team I still believe could have beat anyone in the play off. We were loaded with talent. Tom Wharton had just returned to town and was unstopable at RB. Our QB Rhodes was big and strong. No one could cover Jimmy Mincey, but me. Butch Anthony was just as good.
It showed the next year with me at QB and him making all everybody TEAM. Wild man Dudley was the best of us all. Rod Wilson and Joe Reynolds was pretty good on defense also.
In the Parker game I was involved in both of their scores. I was clearly pulled down when Phil Atler caught the first TD. (no flag)
On the kick off they did a trick play (flea flicker). I was the safety on the field and read the play good. I went to make the tackle and was clearly blocked from behind with the Ref standing right there (no flag was thrown). I was a junior and had one more year to play but I felt so bad for the Seniors and Coach Taylor, because I know we had a great team that year. We played in the Menix Bowl and stomp Chowa. We were pretty good that year.

Haunting Trivia: To this very day, almost 40 yrs later, i feel like crying about that game. A decision that i made during that one play cost us the game. On the kick off I was always on the outside, the last man on the line. Just before the kick off I decided to move inside to be closer to the person catching the ball. I knew i was fast and could get to him. When we kicked off to them I was the first person to get to him. Problem was when i got there he stepped up and threw the ball to the person on the outside, where i should have been. I tried with all my heart to get to the person he threw it to, but like Larry I was hit in the back. When we kicked off we were ahead with 13 seconds left in the game. People were heading out and we were making plans to go to Tallahassee to play Leon. We did'nt, and It was my fault......

The fact that Willard and Larry remember every detail of that play shows us just how competitive they were and still are. But let's also remember that Willard and Larry are two of the BEST ATHLETES to ever come out of Fletcher.

I am looking in 70"s yearbook to post pictures but there are very few pictures of the 144 group in that yearbook. I guess all of our great athletes from the class of 71 put us on the map, as far as appearing in the yearbook(smile). You all were the best in football, track, basketball, cross country, what a fun year. Also, your character was the best, you made us proud. Thanks for the memories! Oh yeah, Larry thanks for explaining what a flea flicker is, I didn't know what it was called back in the day but I remember writing in my yearbook about that game(smile).

I will be posting on my sight next week from the 1970 yearbook and the 1972 yearbook. The following week from the 1973 yearbook and then my yearbooks stop.

Thanks a bunch, Roxanne I see you are up on your game. I look at the earlier graduating classes I didn't see his name. I figure it was somewere in the late 60's. I think he need to have a plug in (CO/69), wouldn't you agree. Now this cat took his game to the next/next level. I enjoy watching him opening up hole's for the late Walter Payton (Sweetnest) w/ the Chicago Bears in the 80's.

Now don't sleep on Gigi's big brother Tim Morgan, (CO/73) he was a beast in his time, and so was Timmy Martin, (CO/76). They both played the same tailback position and wore the same jesery number 27.

Willard Dudley(1971 ) (1971)

Noah was a beast. he got his strength from his fathers business with automobile parts and "stuff." if you were a ball carrier You did'nt want Noah to tackle you. Tom Sullivan was probably the first great running back out of fletcher that went to U. Of Miama. Of course he did'nt go to 144. Noah and Tom played in the NFL. when Tim came on the scene, he was a little prodigy. We tore his butt up, when we could catch him. The same thing with Larry Holsey. He and Tim were speed deamons. You could never get that solid lick on them. We got tired just chasing them. Jimmy Mincey (Joe Demp) was fast and killed you with his moves down field. Broke our hearts when they broke his leg on the side lines (out of bound) against Panama City Rutheford. Butch (Greg Anthony) was hard to cover. Tall, not very fast, but could jump. Had this crazy little fake move with his knees to throw a defender off. It worked most of the time. he used that same ability to excel in basketball. He developed his talent shooting through a tire rim nailed to a post or tree. Thats one of the reasons it kills me to hear kids talk about being denied opportunity. Sometimes you have to make opportunity.

True that, to become successful skill or unskill you can't sit around waiting for something to happen, you have to make things happen for the betterment of onesself. The doors are much wide open today, Just do it. Yeah I remember the niftiness of Larry, Mincy & Tim. They were just speed deamons with shake and bake cuts. Now Butch, had hops.

In speaking about Fletcher's Football teams of the past, I think last year team went 10-0. However, they lost in the first round of the playoffs.

Fletcher's basketball team in 1994-95 school year was like a blast from the past. They made it to state only to have an injury to one of their starters and lost to Miami Senior. Instead of running up the scoreboard, our bench should have been getting some playing time.
Butch ( a member of the previous great team, along with his brother Ron) was one of the coaches for the team.

The late Joe( Julian) Brown and Bruce Hunter and myself followed that team all the way to state. What a fun year. We gave the late Coach Bernard Wilke team Ribault a big upset. If you recalled Ribault has always had a dynasty in Basketball but we beat them.

The following year we made it to Regionals and played against Daytona Mainland High School which happened to have a stand out player by the Name of Vince Carter, The young man was awesome, we lost the game but little did I know that I was shaking hands with a future NBA player. I guess I should have asked Vince Carter for an autograph.(smile).

Ok, I guess I better give this subject a rest(smile).

Okay classmates let's hear some old school stories or special happenings from the past. Also, continue with the pictures, it's so much fun looking at them.

I must say we at Fetcher High won the all sports trophy each year I was there. We took sports to the next level. I remember traveling to Pensacola with Mr. Girardeau (1972) in his T Bird (coolest teacher on campus). Our basketball team was in the playoffs. We beat Bay High in the Semi -And had to play the home team Pensacola for the Regional Finals. We had Lonnie Jack Anderson, Butch Anthony and probable the best all around athlete to EVER come out of Duval County - Ronnie Anthony on our team. We lost to the home team 67 to 69. Although they had Sad Sam McCant on their team. This team of ours was loaded with talented and I hate to say it again, but I was there, they got robbed by the officials. This TEAM was LOADED with talented.

It was the fall of 74 a new tailback came on the seen to replace Tim Morgan, now off to UM. His initials and jersey # was the same. He's now in the spotlight sandlot football is just a memory away.

Fletcher hosts Terry Parker - now the stage is set. My childhood best friend Timothy Martin, runs a chart breaking believe this, FIVE touchdowns in his first game as a freshman fighting senators and the home crowd go's bananna's. I ask Timothy afterwards was it nervous energy or what, however, I don't remember his answer.

Hey Tim, what was it man, your wheaties for breakfasts that day or was it the ten speeds bikes we use to race up and down 2nd ave. ? (Ha!ha!ha!).

Whatca got out there to be heard 144/Duncan U. F. mates.

Let us go back a little further: Jax. Beach #144 Marching Band in our homemade uniforms marching downtown in a parade. Somebody has got to have a picture of the band somewhere. A very good band if i may say so! We went to state and placed High in concert band.

Okay, what about the talent shows, I remember playing the drums and "trying to sing."

Lerexford (Rex) Easterly (1975 ) (1975)

Tell'em Donnie, I sure would like to see those pictures as well. Darn, I'm trying to place the street name and location.

Donnie, were the uniform colors Maroon and Royal blue.

If my memory serves me right, the band would began to pratice in the afternoon with those's funky beats, and my focus go's out the window.

All i can remember is that we lined up on E. coastline drive, thats on the river in front of the hyatt and it was cold. we made a right turn . I can't remember if it was on market street or Ocean. who were the drum majors ?

06/02/09 10:08 PM #232

Jimmy Gamble(1971 ) (1971)

I think that we only had one drum major and that was James Mathews. I remember how proud we all were of that marching band always talking about how we were going to out march Douglas Anderson.

Edith Cumberlander (Lewis) (1975)

I have been reading all the incredible memories that everyone is sharing. Wow, what is the secret. I'm trying to remember where I put my shoes yesterday and you guys are sharing major details from years back. OK, let me in on this memory secret.

06/02/09 10:47 PM #234

James Mathews (1970 ) (1970)

I'm with you Edith. Some of these guys have photographic memories. Yes Jimmy, I was the drum major and I remember marching in Jville. That was a shining moment. Also, I remember marching in the annual Beach opening parade. That was definately a breakthrough and we were so proud. Mr. Collins was a hard driving band director that made us feel that we were on the top of the World. I also wish that we could find pictures of the marching band.
