I know we had a band at 144 but did we have a Chorus or Choir?

Some of my memories from 144:

I remember how the Atlantic Bch classmates used to think it was so cool that Jax Beach could just walk home from school. We had to deal with a lot of drama on the bus but we managed to have a little fun.

Girls were not allowed to wear pants to school

How we said a million times when we had our little argument: I'll get you on the last day. When the last day arrived, you would have forgotten all about it.

At Jax Beach do you'll remember when we had to stand in line and get licks with the strap that I later learned was created from the fan belts on your car. If you drew back your hand then you got double the licks. You wanted to cry but you tried hard not to because you would be teased by your classmates. How we held our teachers in such high esteem?

Remember how we still had prayer in school? I can remember saying the lord's prayer everyday( even though it was outlawed by the federal government)during what we called devotion. We need in the classrooms today.

Donald (Donnie ) Waters (1970) (1970)

Okay guys, good remembrance: what about Mrs.Tiny Thomas and Mr. Freeman going back and forth about her students. She would not let anyone mess with us. If you were in her class you know what I am talking about.

What about James Pinkney and his Pink shirt and pick socks. He dressed so...

Okay what about the Patrol boys and our uniforms and how we would have to patrol the streets, and the signs we would hold to stop traffic. Levon Brown would be sleep on post. Our trip to Washington D.C. We were like litte soldiers. Our uniforms were inspected and we marched to our post and practice to make sure we had it all together. Man I must say I was really proud of my uniform.

Man I have so many wonderful memories. Now I know that someone has pictures of our patrols. I remember Donald Odom being one of our captians.

Some of you might remember Ms. Brittan Home Economics teacher and Mr. Brymer Wood Shop. When he would sit in front of the class eating an apple we knew we were in trouble.

Jimmy Gamble(1971 ) (1971)

Girtha, Elizebeth Smith was the first head clarinet player at Jax Beach, after she left I became the head clarinet player. I remember how proud I was to be sitting in the first section with two 9th graders I was in the seventh grade. I also remember how I wanted to play the tenor sax but given the price difference in the sax and the clarinet my mom made my mind up as to which one I was going to play (smile). I also remember how I would go over to Willard's house after school and practice a piece called The Prelude & The Fude with Willetta, Mr. Herman Green was our first director Mr. Collins came later.

Who did you fear ? Teacher or classmate. for me it was bad ass Walter clark and Jody Ballard his brother. They got out of the bed looking for a fight. The worst person i feared was Janie Mae. Janie Mae did'nt play, and no Sylvia, she did'nt forget me on the last day of school !

Yeah, I was so proud to have the honor to be a part of patrol boy team. Luther Holden was the Captain, Raymond Campbell the Lutientant, and I brought up the rear as Sargent. In 69, we tour the complete state of FL. main destination Miami. Boy did we cut up down in Miami, so Mr. Cooper made it offical that we would be the last group to make a Miami trip. He renig, shucks it was a mini vacation for him from the loot we raise thoughout the yr. Columbus Davis, we miss you my man on that trip. But you see Link was smart about it. We left him for a week with 22 girls in the class, the 6 of us boys treak the FL trip. Smooth move (C.Davis.)

Donald (Donnie ) Waters (1970) (1970)

Willard what about the Francis Avenue football games, Mr. Joe Knights store. Jackson Road bus stop! Got you guys a little roared up when we went back, how about this. Mr. Gould's bus ride, wanting to put Ken Knight off the bus every other week.

KEN KNIGHT WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE MR. GOULD TRIED TO PUT OFF HIS BUS.HE ALWAYS TRIED TO PUT ME OFF AND I WOULD TRY TO FIGHT THE OLD MEAN NASTY MAN.DONNIE SEE WHAT YOU DID. NOW I HAVE TO REPENT. LORD FORGIVE ME.

Girtha (Gigi ) Morgan (1975) (McMullen) (1975)

come on jax beach.think back.roller skating starting from carver center (the entire beach) and don't forget riding your bikes around the "S" curve behind beaches hospital.

06/03/09 03:30 PM #255

Jimmy Gamble(1971 ) (1971)

Given the fact that no one can think of the other two drum majors, we may have all maxed out our memories, let's see who is the first to think of the other two. My guess is Joseph Jackson and Walter Lee Howard, the first correct answer that can be varified wins a tube of Ben Gay.

06/03/09 05:45 PM #256

Lerexford (Rex) Easterly (1975 ) (1975)

Oh gigi, you hit the nail on the head. The "S" curve when we rounded up everyone with a bike, the ones that had a hoopie bike would double up/paddle with someone else then we would race and ride baby ride.

Listen, I heard ya'll still are holding it down with the annual Turkey football bowl on Thanksgiving at the carver center on 4th ave. Is that true? Over the yrs. a lot of bros. got broke up on that field. Heck, I was a spectator, with beer in hand. (Smile).

Sylvia Jones (Martin) (1973)

The person I feared most is John Dee. Everytime I would see him I would be shaking and he would always tease me about having such a deep voice for a girl. I dared not say a word back to him.(smile ). Willard, I can't picture Janey Mae at all, I guess she didn't terrorize me.(smile).

Mr. Gould sure didn't play about putting you off of the bus. I remember one day it was the last day of school and we all decided to rebell. I mean we played loud music and just cut up. He put Glen Davis off the bus and then we all quieted down until we hit Mayport Road and it was on because we didn't mind walking then(smile).

Sylvia Jones (Martin) (1973)

Okay, we have to find our classmates from Mayport and San Pablo. Man, what a ride we had to make just to get to school. The same bus had to pick up people from Mayport, then on to Atlantic Beach and from there to San Pablo before we finally made it to school.
