Ronnie Potter - Class Of 1967

In his Junior year (1966) on May 7, 1966, Ronnie and two classmates were killed in a car accident after the Jr. & Sr. Banquet.  There was no prom so the group was on their way to Pikeville when the accident occured.

I was one of his teachers that year and one of the Junior Class sponsors.  He enjoyed being in the Junior Class play so much.  I was severely distraught the night of the accident when I found out what had happened to him, Wanda, and Charlene.  The remainder of the school year was very difficult for many of the students and faculty.

I tried my best to see that the kids would have a Prom after the Banquet so there would be a less likelihood that this kind of horrible thing would happen.  If I had had the cooperation of some school personnel, there would have been a Prom.

I didnt know Ronnie but he was my cousin.  My dad took us to Jenkins to view the car that Ronnie was driving.  Ronnie's mother was my great aunt.  We also went to the visititations of the women that were killed in the car that he hit.  I wished I had known my cousin but I was a small boy back then,.

I was a classmate and will remember that accident for the rest of my life. What a waste of three wonderful lives over something so stupid as the reason we were given NOT to have our Prom that year. I still pray for everyone involved in that accident to this day, yes, all four of them, all wonderful classmates of mine.
