Kathy Maguire (1970)

Greetings, this is Kathy Maguire, Class of 1970.  When my house was broken in to back in the late 70's my ring was stolen.  I would love to have a class ring, also.  My daughter and husband looked in to this ( I just found that out when I started talking about this yesterday) last Christmas.  They borrowed Sue Richter's ring and took it to a local jeweler.  His quote was over $1,000.00 and he wasn't sure it would look exactly the same.  So, sounds like the quote from Green's Jewelers is in the same ball park.  Ugh!  I can't spend that much, even with a $45 discount for a quantity order. Thanks to everyone who researched this.  Happy Holidays to all.

My sense is that it is recreating the die cut that causes most of the expense... Perhaps we have some classmates who have kept their ring, but to whom the ring doesn't mean so much and who would welcome selling it to someone who does?  Or the families of classmates who have passed on might want to find an appropriate home for it??  Just a thought...

I emailed Green Co. today with more questions. He mentioned that they could make a pendant of the top two pieces so I asked about a price for that. I also asked what makes this ring so expensive and if there are other ways to cut costs.I will post as soon as I get a response. Thanks for all the interest. Who knew??? For all you techies- how do you upload a photo to this message forum? If people continue to post pics with their class year included, maybe we could put together a chronological photo gallery of class rings?

Just heard back from Green Co. again.

"I don’t have an actual gold weight on a pendant but with the white gold base piece included I would guess around $425.  With out the white gold base maybe $350.  A lot of the cost is machine set up and the hand work that need to be done.  The setting of the 12 stones adds to that.  I would not suggest that we make the rings in gold plate.

We do manufacture emblems in gold filled ( a piece of 10K gold bonded to the top surface of a base metal, normally brass) which could work on the pendant and bring the cost down to $160 or so but still not so good on a ring.

If you can get feedback from the ladies it would help me to price all of the possibilities base on quantity (lowering the machine set up cost).

Hope this helps.

I agree, $900 is way out of the ball park.  Pam, do you have an approximate on how many of us who .would like to purchase rings? If we could get the price down to $400 or so. Is that a possibility? I hesitate calling unless you think it would be an option.  Let me know.

I'm glad to read all the discussion about Loretto class rings.  I knew I had not lost mine but couldn't remember where it was after my move to Florida.  Subsequently, I spent all day today trying to locate my class ring, along with some other treasures.  I graduated in 1970 and wore my ring for a year or so but only on special occasions after graduation.   I was always afraid the pearls would fall out (seemed to be a common problem at the time).  I loved that the ring did not look like a traditional class ring for the era and could be worn as a nice piece of jewelry.

I am happy to report that I located my ring today and it's still in pristine condition after all these years.  I can still see my initials inside the ring.  That makes me happy to know I didn't wear them off, but most of all that my eyes are still able to read something that small.

I graduated in 1969 and I would like to find out more information on the rings.  I have my ring but have lost the mounting.

I can't believe it but I would be in the market for a new ring also, unless St Anthony answers my prayers in the very near future.  I went to get my ring last week to take a picture when it was requested and it is not where it should be.  Am fairly certain I wore it to our reunion in June and am afraid someone from my cleaning service may have walked off with it as I am very good about putting it on my ring holder.

As regards the history of some of the style changes, they changed the "LA" to an "L" when the name of the school changed from  Loretto Academy to Loretto in Kansas City, I think shortly after the move south.  I believe it was a year or two after I graduated (1974) that due to the high cost of the traditional rings they went to using Josten's as an option.

I agree $900+ is out of the range of feasible, as well as gold plate probably not a good choice.  I would prefer a ring but would consider a pendant.  Thank you Pam for finding Green Company and doing all the research!!

Am still saying prayers to St Anthony though!!

OK, just saw Nan Chiavola's post.  Obviously I am wrong on when we started giving an option other than the traditional ring!!

Just for kicks, I checked on eBay ~ look what is there!  What's with the skull?

I think a pendant is a great alternative.  Affordable and the size won't change over the years as our hands do!

I lost the crest from my 1971 ring, am not sure I can locate the ring.  Mine had the L with pearls and emerald on the crest.  I heard from several friends that their crests had fallen off, too.  I'd be happy to have a pendant made from that crest, and would prefer that it not be made of an expensive metal.  Thanks to all of you who've put so much effort into researching.  Mary Lou Pierron '71

I have lost my ring and need a replacement. It will cost $900. So I am very interested in going in as a group for repairs and replacements. I am also getting my Mom's class ring pearls that are missing replaced. Please let me know when we decide whether we are going as a group or as individuals. The Green Company said about 30 Loretto people had called wanting repairs or replacements. So will all this interest a group order will drop the price $200. This is a great deal. i would also be interested in a ring.  i lost mine in the 1991 Oakland hills fire.   i like the ring idea better.  if my finger size changes, i would prefer to put the ring on a necklace chain

thanks Mary Z for getting a volume discount!

I called Green Co today and left my info on Mr Schutte's voicemail since I am still unable to find my ring.  I also would prefer a ring but would accept the pendant if need be.

Thanks again to everyone who has done the ground work on this.

I spoke with Mr. Shutte last week.  He would like us to appoint a representative to organize our requests for rings and pendants. Would anyone like to volunteer?  Once he has that information, he will quote discount prices and options. It could amount to a significant discount.

Anita Medellin (Hohnecker) (1968)

I would be willing to take this on and coordinate from our side as graduates of Loretto Academy/Loretto in Kansas City.  I attended both schools  two years at each building

I actually went to the school on 39th street when we lived closer to the school out south. Then when Loretto moved south, my parents bought a house in Roanoke Just around the block from the old school. They still live there.

Not sure what I may be in for, but I need a ring, also. I gave mine to my boyfriend, who later became my husband.  He managed to get it lost when he went to Navy boot camp.  My folks were not happy that I gave it to him!

How could we get the word out about the rings ordering to everyone, not just those who are on this forum? Does someone have a master list of alum?

Thank you Anita!  How wonderful that you are part of the history of both Loretto's!  And how ironic about how your home places interchanged.
