In Biblical times the Maccabees led an uprising for freedom of religion against the Greek rulers in the land now known as Israel. The Greeks had attempted to force everyone to worship the Greek gods. The temple of King Solomon was liberated. A celebration was held. A bottle of oil was found that should have only lasted one day. Instead it lasted eight. This miracle is commemorated by Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. It is celebrated by lighting an additional candle for eight nights. Watch this web page. An additional candle will be lit on the menorah each night of Hanukkah.
