Leo 'Lee' B. Maskill, Jr.

A gentle man with a congenial smile and bright brown eyes died on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at St. Peter's Hospital.

Leo "Lee" Bernard Maskill, Jr. was born on Feb. 7, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Leo B. and Martha Neuer Maskill, where he spent his childhood. His family moved first to Portland, Ore., then La Grande, Ore., where he graduated from high school. He attended Seattle University. Following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps, Lee worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.

As a teen, Lee walked the rails tapping them for loose ties. Eventually he advanced to marketing/sales positions in the UP's offices in San Francisco, New York and San Antonio.

Throughout his life, Lee enjoyed football -- first playing, then watching -- especially Notre Dame football. A talented cook, Lee created excellent recipes.

Lee's father and his younger brother Chris preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Sally Speer, Helena; mother, Marty Maskill, Ridgefield, Wash.; children Chris (Sally) Maskill and grandson Will; Ryan (Terrie) Maskill; Meghan Maskill -- all of Seattle, and Jill (Sean) Openshaw, Hawaii; an aunt and several cousins.

A funeral Mass will be at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Contributions can be made to the Father Patrick Kinney Scholarship Fund at the University of Notre Dame or Special Olympics.
