i relocated with my ex husband in CA. and lived there until 1975 then moved back to Lanai. My divorce became final in 1982 and i got married to David Ahuna and we had the 3 youngest children. Maka was adopted by us in 2002 (unknown parents). In 1985 women were finally given the chance on lana'i to drive the pineapple truck and their was 3 of us who applied for the position and i was the first to open it up for "women" truck driver and after another week the other ladies pass. That was a challenge for me in my life since i never drove a standard car before in my life and the pineapple truck was the first for me normal people would drive a jeep first on lana'i. Then the other ladies with seniority decided to give it a try and we became the lowest on the totem pole, so i decided to try driving the trucks to the harbor which is called a semi and that is another story and i pass and became the first wahine to drive and open that position up. Now that is an experience totally different,because the license had to be a higher type and again you need to take the test. I got minus 5 points from Mr. Romero because i talk to much(LOL) cuz i was so nervous. Then when the Co.started to close slowly down i decided to go for bus driver. Thats when const. started with the hotels. I held 5 jobs on lana'i for over a year every day working and that is something i myself have to figure out how i did that...then i cut it down to 4 jobs on a daily basis. Working for crossing guard, working at school as an EA, working security at the airport, bus driver for MEO, working at LCS. So that is what my life was while living on Lana'i. We moved to NV. when my youngest one(joey) finish school in 2003 and lived there for 6 years, now i live in Arizona. Here in AZ. reminds me of living on lana'i in the "old" days. No paved road on some of the streets just dirt road only paved road is the main road and alot of pot-holes that they have to patch work all the time. One clinic with 2 doctors every tues.and thurs. and pre-medics on the rest of the days. We have 1 fire station,one police dept.(that is located in the school) The best part i love about here is we have 1 school K-12 and staffs remind me of LHS good ohanas. School population is about 400 plus. Now for the fun part we have one grocery store,one gas station(sound fimilar?? with gas prices higher) then we have one post office. We live about an hour drive or more to NV. you need to cross Hoover dam, an hour drive to Kingman where the hospital is and all the grocery stores like Wal-Mart,Safeway,The Dollar.
