Jim died in 1996 after having retired from 26 years in the Air Force. He was living in Custer, SD at the time with his wife JoAnn. Jim and JoAnn had three kids. The oldest is Jim Jr. He currently lives near Custer, SD with his wife and daughter. Their second child was Renee. She died at the age of 7 from a muscular disease. Their third child is John. He currently serves in the Air Force and is stationed in Montana. He has two children.

After Jim retired from the Air Force he and JoAnn moved to South Dakota and lived there for several years before Jim died of a combination of lung cancer and heart related issues.
